4 1: Introduction The VTV2000 and VTV2000-SA are low power scan converter cards which accept non-interlaced VGA data at up to 2048x1536 from a PC or similar computer for conversion to standard composite and s-video NTSC / PAL TV signals. The VTV2000 interfaces to an external PC/104 computer over the standard 8/16- bit PC/104 bus and is mapped into the I/O space of the PC. Configuration jumpers on the VTV2000 allow the card to be mapped into one of several 16-byte I/O regions on the host PC. The VTV2000-SA (stand alone) offers the same functionality but is operated in a stand-alone mode and is configured via a standard serial port. 4

9 1 1: Introduction VTV2000 Scan Converter Card Functional Summary Video Scaling Video Encoder The VTV2000 / -SA provides automatic vertical and horizontal downscaling of the input video, allowing resolutions of up to 2048x1536 to be displayed on a 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL) TV monitor. The video encoder features a composite and S-Video output supporting either NTSC or PAL mode. 9

IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT THE -CP VARIANT WILL POWER UP IN NTSC TIMING MODE AND MUST BE INITIALISED BY THE HOST PC/104 SYSTEM (VTV2000-CP) OR VIA THE SERIAL PORT (VTV2000-CP/SA) FOR PAL OPERATION. 10

11 1 1: Introduction VTV2000 Scan Converter Card RoHS compliance The European RoHS Directive (Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC) limits the amount of six specific substances within the composition of the product. The VTV2000 is RoHS compliant. Anti-static handling The board(s) supplied contains electrostatic components that are susceptible to permanent damage from electrostatic discharge (static electricity). To prevent electrostatic discharge, the boards are supplied in anti-static packaging. When handling a board, observe the following anti-static precautions to alleviate risk of damage: Remove the board(s) from the packaging only when you are working on an anti-static, earthed surface and wearing an anti-static wrist strap. Retain the anti-static packaging that the board(s) were supplied in. If you remove a board from a system, store it in this packaging. 11

To prevent electrostatic discharge, the boards are supplied in anti-static packaging. When handling a board, following a few simple precautions can alleviate risk of damage. Remove a board from the packaging only when you are working on an antistatic, earthed surface and wearing an anti-static wrist strap. Retain the anti-static packaging that a board is supplied in. If you remove the board from a system store it in this packaging. 12

20 3: Getting Started Setting up the hardware Connect the VGA inputs to the computer providing the display. Connect the VGA outputs to a VGA monitor (optional). Connect the appropriate video outputs (COMPV for composite, CHROMA and LUMA for S-Video) to the display device. Connect the serial port (CTS, RTS and DTR) to the computer to be used for control for VTV2000-SA only. Use a direct pass-through cable (i.e. do not use a null modem cable). Apply +5V power to the PWR connector. LED2 will illuminate and the output of the computer should be displayed on both the VGA monitor and the TV display. Please note that the CP variants of the boards include additional components to support PAL signal timings. It should also be noted that the - CP variant will power up in NTSC output timing mode and must be initialized by the host PC/104 system (VTV2000-CP) or via the serial port (VTV2000- CP/SA) for PAL operation. The configuration information is not retained by the hardware during a power cycle. The boards must be configured (either manually or automatically) with the required settings after power up / reset. 20

21 3: Getting Started VTV2000 Scan Converter Card Setting up the software for VTV2000-SA To control the VTV2000 over the serial link, the host PC will require software to be installed. Run vcredist_x86.exe to install the Visual C++ runtimes. If these are already installed, this stage can be omitted. Run VTVInstall.exe to install the software. Running the software The VTV2000-SA configuration software is installed as VTV2000 Settings in the Start menu under AMP\VTV2000. VTV2KConfig screenshot Initially, the software may indicate that there is no VTV2000 installed in the system. In this case, use the Port menu to select the port to which the VTV2000 is attached. Once the desired settings have been selected, they may be saved by clicking OK. Windows will then use these values the next time the application is loaded. Clicking Cancel will restore the settings to those used before running the application. 21

36 3: Getting Started VTV2000 Scan Converter Card Configuring the output The VTV2000 will automatically detect the input VGA signal and configure itself accordingly. This makes user intervention unnecessary in most cases, but there may be a requirement for adjusting the output. The supplied VTV2KConfig application allows fine-tuning of the contrast, brightness, sharpness, flicker filter and saturation. It is also used for setting the output as composite/s-video, RGB or YUV and for switching the standard between NTSC and PAL. Please note that the supplied hardware may not support all of these combinations. To install VTV2KConfig, run the supplied VTVInstall program. It will then be available as VTV2000 Settings in the Start menu under AMP\VTV2000. VTV2KConfig screenshot Once the desired settings have been selected, they may be saved by clicking OK. Windows will then use these values on subsequent boots. 36
