2 Since the introduction of the OVR-0, the world's first 0-2 VTR, SonyO-2 VTR's have been widely accepted in many post production and broadcast stations appreciated its outstanding operational performance along with multi-generation picture quality While SonyO-2 VTR's were rapidly penetrated throughout the world as the standard of 0-2 VTR, there has been growing requirement for cost-efficient digital composite system among the users. To meet this need, Sony now introduces brand-new 0-2 players, the OVR-P28 and OVR-P20 with improved utility and reliability reflecting user's requirements. The OVR-P28 incorporates the new techniques adopted in the current OVR-28, the secondgeneration 0-2 VTR, which improved editing efficienc}{ including Ultrasonic (US) Guides. These guides significantly improve the response speed of the tape transport to operation of the Jog/Shuttle control. The OVR-P28 also features complete recovery of digital audio data when in the Jog mode, making editing much easier and quicker. The OVR-P28 has automatic compensation systems for playback equalization, providing adjustment free operation. A new optional control panel, the BKOV-202, is available for the OVR-P28, providing easier operation with a simplified scroll menu system. The DVR-P28 achieves a longer playback time of 208 minutes with the L-size cassette which makes possible long time unattended operation for program transmission. Inheriting reliable operational performance and robust design created by the development of the world-proven Sony 0-2 VTR's, the OVR-P28 provides opportunity to efficiently improve conventional systems and allows easy integration of a high quality composite system.

3 For maximum use of the DVR-P28, a new optional control panel BKDV-202 is available. Direct Access to Operational Main Functions With the BKDV-202, the operational main functions can be directly controlled by knobs and buttons on the control panel. -Aud\o playback level (Each parameter can be controlled individually.) -Monitor Select and Remote/LDcal selection -Cue memory/recall control Level meters for audio peak, SCH and RF signals are equipped on the control panel, thus they can be directly monitored without entering the set-up menu. A detachable protector which prevents accidental audio level adjustment is supplied with the BKDV-202. and directly the function recall them using keys (F to F4 and SHIFT). The DVR-P28 has three user memories parameters. settings to store set-up One of three can be easily recalled using the "RECALL USER 0 button on the control panel. The large FL (Fluorescent Luminance) display (256 x 64 dots) is employed in the BKDV-202 offering clear and interactive messages. Ease of Channel Condition Monitoring l-our LED lights are incorporated in the BKDV-202 to easily check the channel conditions of both video and audio playback. Green, yellow and red LED's indicate the channel condition: green indicates a good condition and red provides a warning for an insufficient condition, in terms of error rate. When the error rate of either audio or video exceeds the threshold, a red LED blinks and its error rate information will be stored in the error message logger system, together with the time code and the real time data. Simple Menu Construction The BKDV-202 adopts a scroll menu system in order to access mode settings and controls rapidly and easily. All set-up items required for operation of the VTR's are categorized by the menu number, allowing easy access to the desired items. The Test and Diagnostics menus both have a two layer construction to prevent incorrect settings. Moreover, the user can store eight preset items Ultrasonic Guide (US Guide) The advanced tape transport design features newly developed Ultrasonic (US) guides for high response operation in jog and shuttle modes. The use of US vibrating guides drastically decreases friction between the tape and the guide. This is made possible propagating ultrasonic vibrations to the pole of US guide to carry the tape away from the guide very slightly. This results in a smooth tape path mechanism, by which, in particular, jog dial operation is extremely enhanced. by BKDV-202

4 Furthermore, due to the adoption of a CPU used exclusively for driving the US guide, friction between the tape and guide is kept as low as possible regardless of aging of the guide. The highly responsive jog operation is a powerful editing tool when making accurate editing IN/OUT point decisions. Also, the adoption of US guides greatly contributes to reducing the servo lock-up time from the stand-by ON mode. Digital Jog Sound As an editing player, the DVR-P28 has the capability to provide digital audio even in the jog mode. The digitally recorded audio signals offer excellent playback quality, and therefore would also be desirable for use in variable speed. Now, Sony has developed a new VLSI necessary for the complete resolution four channels of digital audio in the jog mode. The digital audio jog operation capability allows speedy and precise IN/OUT edit point decisions. Dynamic TrackingTM The DVR-P28 is equipped with Dynamic Tracking (DT) heads, which will extend the flexible and high quality video applications. By use of this facility, broadcast quality video can be reproduced within a range of - to + 3 times normal speed playback including still and slow motion. With the improved time base compensation and data interpolation circuits, digitai audio sound can also be reproduced at speeds within the range of - to + times normal playback in the VAR (variable) mode. Automatic Adjustment-free Equalization Operation The DVR-P28 has the capability to automatically optimize playback equalization in order to eliminate the need for manual adjustments, keeping the error fate on playback as low as possible. This automatic equalization system will enable adjustment-free operation on the DVR-P28, Warning Indication In order to judge the VTR condition easily, an exclamation mark "!" can be indicated when a malfunction occurs within the VTR. When a red LED on the control panel lights, a warning mark "! " also lights on the FL display and time code data superimposed on a monitor blinks. Channel Condition Monitoring The details of the error rate of each playback can be seen in a control panel menu. The channel channel condition monitoring, along with error message logger facility, allows the user to confirm conditions at any t)me. -~ighest Quality Sign~Pr~~~~~i~g Wide Dynamic Range of Audio the tape and VTR The DVR-P28 uses a high resolution D/A converter of 20 bit/sample for digital audio signals. This D/A converter offers a wide dynamic range of 05dB in playback of digital audio signals which are quantized and recorded at 20 bit/sample. The incredibly wide dynamic range of audio is made possible by not only the adoption of a high resolution D/A converter, but also the advanced audio signal processing circuits employed in the DVR-P28. The newly developed ADSP's (Audio Digital Signal Processor) used in the audio signal processing block allow audio signals to be handled at 20 bit/sample. Video 0 bit/sample D/A converter The DVR-P28 adopts 0 bit/sample D/A converter to obtain the best dubbing characteristics from the digital to analog domain. The 0 bit/sample D/A converter have unusually rich characteristics in differential and integral linearity, which contributes to obtaining the highest quality pictures. The adoption of high resolution D/A converter for both audio and video will draw the maximum performance from analog equipment interfaced with the DVR-P28. VTR Condition Error Message Logger The DVR.P28 has the capability occurred Monitoring to log errors which within the VTR. Up to 00 error items can be stored in the VTR. The error messages can be displayed onto a diagnostics menu, indicating the time code or the real time data as well. Accordingly, when an error occurs during playback, the messages can be seen together with the time code or the real time data which will eliminate the need for observation of VTR conditions during operation. Adaptive Comb Filter y IC separation is one of the critical aspects of signal processing in composite VTRs, and the DVR-P28 employs an adaptive comb filter to perform high quality y IC separation. This comb filter uses the three!ine correlation technique, in which the complete y IC separation is carried out by referring to several correlative samples within three adjacent TV lines. This filtering system features reduction of cross color interference, vertical waveform distortion, etc., which contributes to improving picture quajity in Dynamic Tracking playback.

5 Built-in Signal Generators The DVR-P28 has a built-in signal generator with 3 types of video signals; Color Bars (75%), Mod-Ramp, Black Burst, and an audio signal of khz, which from a control are selected panel menu. These built-in video/audio test signals are effective for VTR maintenance, system connection examinations, or in adjustments of D/A converter, which will improve the DVR-P28's maintenance efficiency. Multi-loop Test Facility The Multi-loop Test is designed to properly simulate video parameter adjustments which occur when several generations of video processing is made in a conventional analog video system. This facility provides the opportunity to adjust the video parameters of analog equipment, including compensation for signal degradation due to cable characteristic. The number of generations of video processing tested in this system can be selected to be 5, 0 or 20. As well as the built-in video test signals, any picture ontape in the DVR-P28 can. be used as a picture source in the Multi-loop Test mod,e. The results of this testing can be seen on a video monitor and a WFM monitor. This facility allows the DVR-P28 to be easily integrated into an analog video system, providing improvements in analog interfacing. Audio Program Play With the addition of the optional BKDV-0 Audio Program Play board, the DVR-P28 offers broadcast quality playback of all four digital audio channels within the range of :!:5% normal speed in increments of 0.%. High Speed Recognizable Sophisticated Tape Transport Mechanism Color Picture In order to catch the desired editing points on-tape, high speed color picture search facility is furnished in the DVR-P28. The DVR-P28 offers recognizable search at shuttle speed up to :t 00 times normal playback The addition of a tension regulation arm on the take-up side enables a smooth tape path within the tape transport system. Also, each tension regulation arm on the supply or take-up side has a tension pick-up sensor to control the tape tension while threading or unthreading. This mechanism makes sophisticated servo control possible, resulting in a reduction of the loading and unloading time. Powerful sintering samariurl"r cobalt magnets are adopted for the reel motors. The use of powerful reel motors makes high response jog dial operation possible, together with the use of US guides. An improved servo control system in the DVR-P28 achieves a high speed servo lock-up, while offering precise and gentle tape-tohead contact. speed. color picture Reliable Mechanical Construction The DVR-P28 uses a computer aided mechanic'al design tools. Using this design tool, a robust casting chassis with rib construction has been developed for the DVR- P28. This robust chassis was made possible by precisely calculating the load of each assembly over the casting chassis. A double railed parallel flat loading system is adopted for the tape loading mechanism, which enables a faster loading comparing to that of a single loading system. This loading system also effectively prevents tape damage because a tape can be extracted in parallel to the plane of the casting chassis. Furthermore, the short loading stroke offers quick access to the desired picture. Serial Interface of Audio and Video By installing the optional BKDV-03 Serial Interface Board into the DVR-P28, serial transmission of digital video and four channels of digital audio signals can be carried out via the serial digital output ports. Long distance transmission of up to 200 meters for digital video and audio signals can be performed via a single coaxial cable. This interface drastically simplifies connection with other serial digital equipment. Easy Maintenance A control panel attached to the front of the DVR-P28 can be completely removed and connected to the rear panel of the VTR. The top panel of the DVR-P28 is a detachable mechanism with a twist lock screw so it can be easily removed from the VTR. Also, in order to provide for easy VTR installation or removal from a 9-inch rack system, the quick release rack mount handle is supplied with the DVR-P28. Accordingly, the DVR-P28 is designed to provide high reliability and durability of the key parts within a VTR, and high serviceability which results in a reduction of maintenance costs.

6 Remote Digital Output Parallel Digital Video A parallel digital video output port is provided for the OVR-P28 and its interface conforms to the SMPTE T4.224/082A. Interface with Sony OVR-200, OVR-2000 and OVR-000/0VPC VTR's is also available via the optional digital rate converter OFX-20. Serial Digital Video/Audio By installing the optional BKOV-03 Serial Interface Board into the OVR-P28, serial transmission from the OVR-P28 becomes possible. Serial digital transmission provides the convenience of composite digital video and four channels of digital audio on a single coaxial cable. Serial Digital Audio Four channels of serial digital audio output ports are equipped for the OVR-P28, which conform to the AES/EBU format (48 khz sampling), synchronizing with video. Analog Output The DVR-P28 is also equipped with analog composite video, analog audio and cue audio output ports whlch enable the DVR-P28 to be easily installed into a conventional analog system. RS-422A The DVR-P28 is equipped with three RS-422A serial communication ports for flexible system control. Interface to various RS-422A equipped Sony VTR's and BVE series editing controllers is possible. RS.232C One RS-232C serial port is provided for interface with various external equipment, such as microcomputers. The baud rate, data length, etc. of this port can be selected according to the external equipment to be interfaced with the DVR-P28.
