I believe it sets a bad example. However, I rack up a solid 60 hours or so a week on average and I know there are people in our community who genuinely wonder what it is I do all day. 2 Page 2 So that was my day; fairly unimpressive, I must say!! However, here is some food for thought that I am going to try to console myself with.is leadership about how much we do or how we do it and why we do it? I remember those students at University (you probably do too) who used to try to intimidate me (and to some extent succeeded) by boasting of the number of hours they had spent in the library revising for forthcoming exams. I don t want our students to become like that. I want them to study hard, sure, but I also want them to lead balanced lives and lives that are led in a spirit of service. I want them to go through their day and all its trivialities trying to leave every situation or person they encounter better than they found it. 3 Page 3 HEAD OF SECONDARY MESSAGE On behalf of all the staff in the Secondary school I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all our parents for lunch on Thursday. An even bigger THANK YOU to the PTA for all their organization. THANK YOU! Things to look forward to At a number of meetings this week it became apparent that we are not always as good as we should be at sharing positive news. In the coming term we will be organizing a number of meetings that will look at; Past and future curriculum developments in each Key Stage The use of My IMaths, Kaboodle and Accelerated Reader Internet safety and the role of technology in children s lives The use of Google Classroom We hope to give parents a better insight into the many new initiatives going on at KISU. We don t want to bring out children up to boast but we do want to recognize when they are successful. Here is a list of secondary ISSAK events from term 1 of this year. 5 Page 5 Sports director Well done to our wonderful secondary swim team on their victory in the ISSAK swim gala. Competing against 5 other schools, we came out on top by the narrowest of margins over ISU with GEMS not far behind to retain the trophy. It was a true team effort as it was the final freestyle relay races that pulled us through. James Whiston Sports Director and Head of PE

6 Page 6 GADGET CORNER Osmo Pocket You remember those DJI guys? They are not just famous for making drones. There is more about t h e m t h a n drones. A couple of months ago they released the gimbal. Well, they have followed that up with a rather small but effective camera called the OSMO POCKET. The Osmo Pocketis a small camera that's three-axis stabilized by its own gimbal. It shoots 4K60 video at 100Mbps with its 1/2.3" 12 MP sensor that has 1.55μm pixels, f/2.0 aperture, and an 80- degree field-of-view. The Osmo Pocket has dual mics, as well as an 875 mah battery that should last up to 140 minutes and charges from 0 to 100% in 73 minutes. That is just the start, it gets more impressive. Some people have already billed it the GoPro Killer but I will not be carried away, I will be objective if that is possible. Thing is it s meant to offer drone-like footage in a size that is comparable to a GoPro but at a friendly price of only $349 and ships December 15th just in time for Christmas so you know what the drift is. The Osmo Pocket stands just four inches tall and weighs barely over four ounces (116g). When you turn it off, the gimbal tilts the camera on end so that the whole system can fit into a small case, which then easily slides into a pocket hence the name. The Osmo is Incredibly Small, Truly Smooth and uses DJI's smallest 3-axis mechanical handheld gimbal. In real time, it precisely adjusts for your movements, turning your handheld video of a golden sunset or your child s first steps into a movie-like scene, at least that is what they say on their website. These guys also claim that the Osmo is a Powerful Tool for Limitless Imagination. Osmo Pocket transforms all your life s moments into wonderful images. It snaps photos in stunning detail, thanks to a 1/2.3-inch sensor, 80 FOV, and f/2.0 aperture. It can also shoot 4K/60fps video at 100 Mbps and photos at 12 MP with a pixel size of 1.55 μm for footage worth sharing every time. DJI says the Osmo Pocket will last for up to two hours shooting in 4K at a slightly lower frame rate of 30 fps. The Osmo Pocket also captures 12-megapixel photos, and it has dual microphones for recording audio. There s a tiny one-inch touchscreen on the Osmo Pocket where users can frame their shot or toggle through settings. It s a bit hard to make out at arm s length, but users can also plug their iphone or Android phone (it comes with USB-C and Apple Lightning adapters) into a modular port on the side of the Osmo Pocket for a bigger viewing screen and more granular controls, using the company s new app. While it may be smaller than previous DJI stabilizers, the Osmo Pocket still offers some of the company s advanced shooting modes, too, like object tracking, face tracking, time-lapse, and auto panorama. DJI also plans to sell a number of accessories for the Osmo Pocket. There s a mount that will let users attach it to things, GoPro-style, as well as a Wi-Fi controller, a set of ND filters, a waterproof case, an extension rod, and a 3.5mm adapter for external microphones. Also coming soon is a carrying case with a battery that can charge the Osmo Pocket while stored. There is more, If you don't want to rely on the Osmo Pocket's lilliputian screen, you can connect the Pocket to an Android or ios device; it ships with two connectors that snap into a slot right below its display. The app gives you all the controls from the camera, but puts them right at your fingertips, without having to dive through menus. I especially like that I can manually move the camera by dragging my thumb across the phone's screen. Also in the app is Story Mode, which will automatically stitch together multiple clips and photos into a movie. You can pick from a number of different themes, including Leisure, Fashion, Cut, Lively, Party, and Rhythm. DJI will sell a number of accessories, including an extension pole, an underwater case, and a wireless adapter, so you can control the Osmo Pocket remotely using your smartphone. So, whatever your plans for the holidays are, and you do not feel like waking around with a heavy camera but still want quality photos for your memory, maybe this is the one for you. 7 Page 7 PTA NEWS Dear Parents and Guardians What a busy time of the year this is! We hope that you all enjoyed the KISU Christmas Carnival last Saturday. We certainly had so much fun at the PTA Tombola table on Saturday. Thank you again to the key Sponsors of prizes Riham, Shoprite, Kardamom, koffee, Café Latte, Swiss Cut, Flame tree Stables, French and Italian Embassies. We could not have pulled it off without their very generous donations of prizes. Of course a VERY BIG thank you to every KISU family that brought in prizes too. Thank you for helping us make this event possible and at such short notice! Teacher Appreciation Lunch On Thursday we hosted the annual Teacher Appreciation Lunch. What a stunning event. Thank you to all of you that sent in food for the teachers and staff to enjoy. Our heartfelt thanks also goes out to everyone that came to help with the set-up, service and tidy-up afterwards. These events simply cannot be a success without the many hands that help out.

8 Page 8 PTA NEWS Finally, we would like to extend special well wishes to the Bowmaker family and to Rose Bowmaker in particular. After 8 years in Uganda, they are returning back to South Africa. Rose served on the PTA Executive for 5 years, including 2 years as Chairperson. She has been an invaluable source of information and support to every PTA team that came after her. You will be missed! Wolf and kid then start telling each other the story of their respective lives... Adaptation from a children s classic by French author Daniel Pennac. The Cyclop of the Sea To escape loneliness, Ro, a Cyclops lighthouse keeper, invents a colony of wood and cork characters to which he gives voices and movement.
