This was either new topics or nice refreshment for all and was complemented by daily assignments that allowed the students to better understand the internal image structure and also try their hand with some simple processing techniques. imagine Update 2008 page 2 of 7

3 Summary of Activity: Real Time Processing A Small Bussinness Perspective On Wednesday June 25 Th, the REU cohort attended a presentation delivered by Mr. Sanjeev Wahi. Sanjeev is the is an adjunct faculty at MSU and the Chief Technology Officer for Automated Datafeed Solutions Inc. (ADS), a small company located at Picatinny- Arsenal, NJ with extensive background on financial (real-time Market Data) and Department of Defense projects dealing with real-time systems, sensor networks, imaging and multiresolution data. Mr. Wahi has over fourteen years of computing industry experience that included both managerial and developer positions. He is connected to imagine REU in many ways. In 2007 he supervised one of the REU students (Alex Sheppard) in the development of a real time data structure library that can be generically employed for any RT solution. This year, Sanjeev is the site s industry liaison and scientific advisor. Sanjeev Wahi presents on Real Time processing and small business initiatives.. His presentation had two roles. First, he focused on the challenges of designing industry grade real time systems that would accommodate the immense flow of data that are provided in many applications such as financial market analysis or target tracking systems. He discussed the advantages and disadvantages of various programming languages current used in software development and showed examples of real time code libraries and applications. He showed how Alex s work last year was very similar to a newly released real time circular buffer library. In the second part of the talk, Sanjeev discussed how a small business can narrow its focus to attract clients and increase its activity. He discussed how his graduate studies in submarine target tracking combined with years of experience as software developer helped him change his career path from employee to owner of a small business. imagine Update 2008 page 3 of 7

4 Summary of Activity: REU 2007 Sample Project On Wednesday June 25 Th, the REU cohort attended a presentation delivered by Mr. Christopher Neylan. Chris is a senior in Computer Science attending The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). This summer he is attending the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) REU program on networks and security, in Newark, nearby. In Summer 2007, Chris was one of the eight imagine REU Summer Program participants and he was invited back to provide an overview of his work at Montclair, as well as provide and example of a well rounded research project. Note that the work he presented was part of a joint project with another REU participant (Mr. Lawrence Tyler Rush, formerly at Susquehanna University, PA, currently heading into a doctoral program in computer science at University of New Mexico). Working with Dr. Gutierrez and with feedback from Dr. Robila, Chris and Tyler devised a graphics based application for improved visualization of hyperspectral images. Chris Neylan s presentation of a new visualization approach for hyperspectral images. The project was developed as part of the REU 2007 imagine Program. Their work, titled Weighted Color Composite Image Algorithm for Hyperspectral Data, is a novel approach to produce a single color composite image from hyperspectral data using weighted spectra averages. By doing so, they created a two dimensional representation of the hyperspectral image in order to see if it can be used to effectively identify subjects within the image, without the need of further transforms. The weighted average is based on a sequence of numbers (weights) that when summed totals to one and selected using pixel value information and interband distance. Separate sequences of weights are generated for each of the three color bands forming the color composite image. Tuning of the weighting parameters as well as emphasis on different spectral areas allows for emphasis of one or other feature in the image. The produced image is a distinct approach from a regular color composite result, since all the bands provide information to the final result. Chris and Tyler s work was presented as poster in the 2008 SPIE Defense and Security Symposium: imagine Update 2008 page 4 of 7

5 With support from the imagine REU program, in March 2008, they travelled to the conference held in Orlando, FL, where they attended the event and presented the poster. In addition, a paper summarizing their work was published in the following volume: A common dinner took place after the presentation. It is hoped that Chris s visit and presentation helped us understand how to work throughout the projects. It was also refreshing to see Chris sporting last year s program T-shirt! Summary of Activity: Visit to Videobank (as related by Shawna Ruff and Rachel Artiss) VideoBank is a company located in Northvale, NJ that specializes in managing media content (video, audio, images, and documents) for other organizations. They create databases mainly for visual content in an easy-to-manage way for their clients. Although being a relatively new company, they already have a diverse array of clients, including National Geographic, the US Air Force, and the NHL. Our trip to VideoBank began bright and early at 10AM on Monday, July 21. We traveled in Stefan and Dan C s vehicles. The voyage seemed to be going smoothly until the Stefan group arrived at VideoBank with the Dan group nowhere in sight. They had made a wrong turn and arrived soon after Stefan got them back on track. With the group reunited we began our tour. Josh greeted us upon our arrival. We first went into the demo room, but Josh thought it would be smarter to take us on a tour first to make sure that we were awake. First we journeyed into the break-room/lounge/conference room. This is where we met the president/owner of the company hard at work. We were then taken to a room full of servers. This is where most of the tweaking and testing for their projects take place. Attached to that was a warehouse that stores all the hardware that the company uses. That was the extent of our tour. We then headed back to the demo room for the beginning of the demo. Next, Josh proceeded to show us how a VideoBank system worked. Although VideoBank creates archive systems for all kinds of media, they mostly specialize in video. Basically, a company will come to VideoBank with archive footage, sometimes on videotapes. VideoBank will then convert this content to three different formats: digital uncompressed, mpeg-2 and mpeg-1. This way, the client will have high quality videos for their permanent archives as well as video to stream online. VideoBank systems also enable their clients to easily log, transcode, and edit their data. Furthermore, VideoBank is a very customer friendly company, in that they are the direct point of contact if any problems arise. imagine Update 2008 page 5 of 7

6 He first showed us the logging screen that they built for NASCAR. There were three pages of drop-down logging information. The drop-down system took too long to log the race while it was going on, so VideoBank created an easier way to log the race by making it all touch screen. A lot of the information that before had to be manually inputted for each driver was now all compacted into one button for each driver. With the system you could tag and playback multiple videos at once. You could also flag a part of the race if you missed what happened so that you could log it later. We also looked at the system that they made for the Department of Defense that logged video of satellite images and test flights. They made this system touch screen to enable it to be easy to learn how to use because there would be a lot of people needing to use the system and no one would be there on a long term basis. There were six different satellite images and you could log information for the different videos similarly to the NASCAR system. The NHL system was mainly built to be able to cut the most important parts of a hockey game and use them in multiple ways. One thing that Josh told us was that these clips could be sent directly to Verizon customers that were subscribed to a certain package. Another way they were used was to make a shortened version of the game with only the highlights. VideoBank was able to make this so simple for them to do that the same job that used to take ten people now only takes two. Here he showed us that you are able to take videos and put them into a playlist that you could either save or to someone else. VideoBank also made for Corbis Motion a database that is easy to imagine Update 2008 page 6 of 7

7 search through, so that customers browsing for stock footage could find whatever they were looking for. At the end of the demo, we went into the conference room, where Tamas answered any questions that we might have had about VideoBank.
