2 What is HDCP 2.2? HDCP 2.2 is the latest evolution of copy protection designed to create a more secure connection between a source and a display. It s important to understand that HDCP 2.2 is a physical chipset, and that 2.2 is not hardware compatible with earlier versions, therefore only the new chipsets can support 2.2. Existing chipsets cannot be upgraded with firmware. This is crucial because HDCP 2.2 is a requirement going forward for any source device delivering HDCP content at 4K UltraHD resolutions. Why is it important? Understanding HDCP 2.2 limitations is critical for any dealer looking to install a 4K UltraHD system. The difficulty is that HDCP 2.2 is set apart from other revisions in that it is not backward compatible. What that means is, a 2.2 enabled display will work with legacy equipment, but a 2.2 enabled source will not work with legacy equipment. For a system to work without limitation, everything in the chain after the 2.2 source device must be HDCP 2.2 compliant (matrix switches, receivers, extenders, displays, etc.). It s important to research your products of choice and make sure they ve been designed to work with future technologies.
