It is critical to the survival of Internet TV broadcasters, and it's a skill that can make or break an Internet TV station. While I've been researching and interviewing companies about their techniques, three key issues have come to my attention--preparation, technical requirements, and production. Remote TV interview preparation requires the interviewer to consider what is necessary in order to have a successful live broadcast. Remote TV interview preparation includes researching, making a list of questions, the setting, and streaming options. To have the best stream possible, Internet TV broadcasters must consider what equipment to use. Technical requirements include webcams, microphones, editing software, and prerecorded interview clips. Producing the remote TV interview involves the social interaction between the interviewer and the interviewee. Questioning techniques, specific video angles, connecting with your interviewee, and broadcasting standards should all be considered. In addition to having knowledge about executing a live remote interview, the interviewer must have a back up plan in case of an emergency, such as a lost broadband connection or an interviewee who uses profane language during the broadcast. How companies recover from these mishaps will determine how the audience feels about the trustworthiness of the broadcaster. Internet TV broadcasters must come up with a way to efficiently stream remote TV interviews in order to succeed. Regardless of how you plan on preparing for and executing a remote TV interview, there is one thing that is certain--if you don't figure out how to do it the right way, you can damage your credibility, or even lose your job. 8 Market Update 46% of Flat Panel TVs to Ship with Internet Connection in 2013 By: ABI Research As demand for connected devices expands, Internet-connected TVs form a category poised for growth and evolution. According to new forecasts from ABI Research, the estimated 19% of flat panel TVs shipping with Ethernet in 2010 will grow to 46% in 2013, and connectivity is expected to become a mainstream feature. Figure 1.1 and 1.2 show the growing percentage of Connected Flat Panel Televisions between 2010 and What will viewers see and interact with on these connected sets? According to industry analyst Michael Inouye, "New features will include media guides/browsing, Web browsing, and more tightly integrated social and information-based datasets." New opportunities for advertising and cross-marketing will flow from these developments too, as well as new roles for the television manufacturers. "TV makers no longer want to build 'dumb screens,'" says Inouye. "Rather than simply selling boxes, TV makers themselves could try to secure part of the revenue generated by ads their devices present." TV makers won't be providing all that content themselves, of course. Netflix, for instance, has an application available for use with connected TVs. The tight integration of software and hardware raises difficulties, however, because each manufacturer's combination of hardware and operating system works in different ways, so applications must be customized for each brand of television. That has discouraged some app developers, but others are pushing ahead. Then there's the networking: Wi-Fi has made some early headway, but wired formats are more robust, especially for HD content. G.hn, HomePNA, MoCA, and Powerline are all contenders in the long term, perhaps displacing the currently most robust solution, Ethernet. There are some early efforts to standardize all this multiplicity: Vudu streams everything from the Cloud. An Android OS would help compatibility. But such initiatives will take time to mature. Inouye concludes, "This market is very fluid and uncertain, and with so many parties vying for a piece of the action, that fluidity may persist for years." It also allows conversion of DVB-S/S2, C and T for IPTV and Video Networking. The new DMM series was specially developed for compact and cost-effective DVB-IPTV networking of radio and TV programmes. The professional DVB/IP gateway cards offer a multitude of functions as a pure hardware solution: Network transmission and IP ingest of TV and radio channels Transmission of DVB signals in original SD/HD quality Handling of all DVB-S/S2 satellite, DVB-C cable, DVB-T and ASI signals Decoding of pay TV: as standard with CI slot, for CAM with smart card Compact IPTV headend solution 8 cards in 19" 4RU plug-in frame with redundant power supply Broadcasting centers, editorial departments and publishing houses use DVB gateways to provide their employees with highquality live television directly to their workplace PC. In addition, DVB gateways are always used where live TV and radio are required through the network - for simultaneous viewing on PC's, TV's or projectors - such as for hotel TV and patient TV applications, within IPTV triple-play solutions, provider headends, for digital corporate television, for educational television, distribution and recording at schools and universities, as well as in monitoring companies and control and command centres. The DMM series consists of a 19" x 4RU frame, by standard with redundant power supply. The chassis holds up to 8 DMM cards which can be hot-swapped and hot-plugged during operation. The configuration of the DVB-IPTV headend for different DVB input signals can be freely selected and different input cards can be combined. All components are developed for 24/7 continuous operation. The cards are extremely robust without moving parts, such as fans or hard drives. DMM cards are easy to configure via the network using software as well as locally with an optional plug-in control panel. In addition, SNMP management and monitoring is supported. The output streams are based on the open MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC formats, conform to ISO/IEC standards. Thus the modules are compatible with cost-effective standard IPTV set-top boxes, such as the Amino 130 series with HDMI output, or the VLC player. Multicast/unicast, SPTS/MPTS and UDP/RTP streaming are supported. DIRECTV and Alcatel- Lucent provide condo communities with the best in advanced video entertainment and telecommunications services El Segundo, Calif., and Paris, April 28, DIRECTV and Alcatel-Lucent announced that through the combination of DIRECTV's IPAdvantage satellite-based IP platform and Alcatel-Lucent's VDSL2 technology and multimedia professional services, multidwelling unit residents will have access to a whole new world of advanced video entertainment services, blazing high-speed Internet access and voice over IP (VoIP) services. Residents of the 1,296-unit condo community of Shelter Creek in San Bruno, Calif., are the first in the United States to benefit from the combination of these technologies that provide access to advanced video and telecommunications service bundles that were typically available only to residents in single family homes. The Shelter Creek project is the largest installation using DIRECTV's IPAdvantage technology and provides a model for offering DIRECTV's services portfolio to large, older properties where rewiring poor-quality coaxial cable is not cost-effective or feasible. Using the existing, in-building telephone wiring is significantly less expensive and extends the 10 May 2010 Definitions FREE at

investment in that infrastructure. It also minimizes the aesthetic impact on the community as well as inconvenience to residents. "The Shelter Creek project is a great example of how DIRECTV's services offering can be extended to properties of any age and any size on a nationwide basis - in a simple and cost-effective way," said Dan Terheggen, CEO Consolidated Smart Systems, DIRECTV's Gardena, Calif.-based MDU service operator that spearheaded the project. "The Shelter Creek residents tell us they are thrilled to now have more choice in services and be able to enjoy the same DIRECTV experience as those living in single-family homes. And we're getting rave reviews from the property managers who now have a terrific amenity to enhance the property's value and appeal, helping to increase occupancy in a competitive market." "DIRECTV's IPAdvantage technology has exponentially expanded the business opportunities for DIRECTV in the multidwelling unit market and we will continue to aggressively roll out this innovative technology in 2010 with 300 installations already planned," said Mike Olson, vice president, MDU Sales for DIRECTV. "Living in a large apartment or condo complex no longer means consumers have to settle for only one provider for their video entertainment and telecommunications services. DIRECTV believes in supporting choice for MDU residents and building owners, and Shelter Creek is an excellent example of how we can use IPAdvantage technology to provide that competitive choice." DIRECTV IPAdvantage, not to be confused with IPTV, converts DIRECTV video signals into IP video packets to IP-enabled receivers over a single home-run wire, delivering satellite TV and other services from a private "on property" head-end to each customer's unit. The IP distribution platform, in addition to supporting advanced video services like HD and HDDVR receivers, also supports voice, internet and interactive services now enabling dealers to deliver IPbased dual or triple-play bundles. "These tools give clients exactly what they need to fine-tune advertising strategies, gauge the effectiveness of viewer-driven promotions, and optimize the mix and placement of video on their sites in real time." He went on to add that effective analytics are equally valuable to clients using video for marketing, training and customer-support programs. "Monitoring effectiveness for achieving lead generation, compliance and cost-saving objectives has never been faster or easier." NEC Develops Video Content Identification Technology that detects Illegal Video Copies on the Internet in a Matter of Seconds Tokyo, May 7, NEC Corporation announced the development of a video content identification technology that detects illegal copies of video content uploaded to the Internet in a matter of seconds.this technology generates a fingerprint (video signature) to identify video content then compares video signatures to the signatures of original content in order to detect copies or altered versions. This new technology enables content holders and service providers to automatically detect illegal copies and prevent illegal upload of video content on the Internet by registering original video content. These developments are expected to significantly reduce the time and cost of manual content inspections as well as improve the scale and accuracy of content assessment. These video content identification technologies feature the following: 1. Accurate detection of copied or altered video content: Video signatures are extracted for each frame based on differences in the luminance between sets of sub-regions on a frame that are defined by a variety of locations, sizes, and shapes. Video signatures represent a unique fingerprint that can be individually detected frame by frame. This technology is capable of accurately detecting video content with that was created with such editing operations as analog capturing (*3), re-encoding (*4) and caption overlay (*5), which was conventionally very difficult to detect. 2. A high detection rate and low false positive rate for all video contents: By estimating confidence of signatures generated from each frame and using the confidence for sequence identification, the technology achieves a high detection rate (*6) with a very low false positive rate (*7). These technologies achieved an average detection rate of 96% at a very low false alarm rate of 5ppm (5 in one million) through tests conducted by the international standardization organization. 3. Detection of short video scenes:due to the high identification capability of signatures, the technology is capable of accurately detecting video scenes as short as 2 seconds (60 frames), which was formerly impossible when using conventional methods. 4. Compatibility with home PCs: By designing a compact signature size of 76 bytes per frame, the storage memory required for the matching process is minimized. As a result, a home-class PC (*8) can match approximately 1,000 hours of video in 1 second. Due to the proliferation of video distribution services on the Internet, the detection and deletion of illegally distributed and copied video content (copyright infringement) has become a crucial issue for content holders and service providers. In order to solve this issue, various automatic detection tools have been proposed, such as digital watermarks where content is embedded with special code, and the use of image retrieval technology. However, it was prohibitively difficult to accurately inspect large databases, short content or video produced through various editing operations. Subscribe FREE at May

TV Advertising Series Television Ad Campaigns A television ad campaign is a set of marketing activities that send advertising messages to customers about products, services and options offered by a company through the insertion of content or association of promotional media within television channels or programs. Campaign objectives are the goals of specific promotional ad campaigns, and can range from brand impressions to direct product sales. Audience selection is the process of defining desired viewer characteristics for an ad campaign, which can be derived from demographic and market reach. Media channel selection is the choice of networks, programs or advertising systems that will be used to broadcast the TV commercial. Ad insertion requirements are the conditions that must exist for the insertion of ads. Ad scheduling is the selection of time periods or events within which ads can or will be inserted. Figure 6.1 shows some of the key tasks in TV ad campaigns. Campaign objectives are the measurable goals that should be achieved. Audience selection is the characteristics associated with potential viewer groups. Media channels are the systems and programs which will receive the promotional messages. Scheduling is the time(s) during which the ads will be broadcasted. Reporting is information that identifies the insertion of ads and, if available, viewers' reactions (channel tuning). TV campaign objectives include increasing brand impressions and web site traffic, as well as co-operative marketing, sales lead generation, and direct product and service sales. TV advertising can increase brand value by increasing the number of brand impressions seen by qualified people. Links contained within TV advertising commercials can generate more visitors for web sites (increased web traffic). Distributor promotional support is the provision of promotional messages that identify or refer customers to distributors or retailers. TV ads can be designed to encourage people to request more information about product or service solutions (sales leads). TV advertising commercials may contain direct offers that encourage and enable viewers to directly buy the products or services shown in the TV ads. Figure 6.2 shows some TV advertising campaign objectives. Brand value is the presentation of positive influences on the perception of the brand or product name (mindset change). Web site traffic value Figure 6.1, Television Ad Campaigns 14 May 2010 Definitions FREE at

is an increase in the number of visitors that go to a web site or web page. Distributor support is the provision of advertising support for distributors or retailers. Sales leads are requests for information that contain or lead to the gathering of identification and qualification information of people or companies. Direct sales increases are the generation of product or service sales as a result of advertising messages. Brand Value Brand value is a measure of the overall image or concept of the meaning or value of a word, name or address (such as a web address) by consumers. Brand value can be influenced by the number of brand impressions, the context or content surrounding the brand impression, and any pre-existing notions viewers have about the brand. Brand Impressions A brand impression is a single presentation of a message or media item that provides viewers with information about brand qualities or attributes. A recipient may be exposed to brand messages without direct perception such as seeing a logo on a product in a commercial (product placement). Association Context The association context or state of mind can significantly influence how a recipient perceives or relates to the brand impression. For example, the announcement of a new book on search engine optimization on a web page that displays a person winning a Nigerian lottery is very different than the announcement of a new book on search engine optimization on an Internet Marketing training web site. Mindset A mindset is the attitude or beliefs of a person that often determines their perception and response to situations or events. Mindset may be described in terms of awareness, perceived value as related to a need or desire, and the credibility or beliefs of related thoughts. Web Site Traffic Web site traffic is the number of people who visit a web site over a period of time. Web site traffic may be increased by the percentage of people who click on inbound links. The value of inbound traffic can be strongly influenced by the types of people who click on links (visitor qualification). Web Site Popularity Web site popularity is a measure of the interest that users have in finding or using a web page. Search engines use site popularity (such as traffic amount) as a factor in determining the relative ranking of web page URLs that are presented as the result of a keyword search. Successful TV commercials can produce a large amount of web site visitors which can dramatically improve web site popularity. This can have a significant long term impact over the search ranking results of a web site. Qualified Visitors Qualified visitors are people who visit web sites who meet a certain criteria (such as age and interest category), indicating their likeliness and capability to perform desired actions (such as order products or complete subscriptions). The types of visitors that select links can determine the quality of the web site visitors they provide. Distributor Promotional Support Distributor promotional support is the provision of advertising messages that identify a distributor or retailer of a product or service as a Figure 6.2, TV Ad Campaign Objectives Subscribe FREE at May

point of sale location (where the customer can obtain the product or service). Co-Operative Advertising Co-operative advertising is the provision of an amount of funds, percentage of sales or marketing allowance to a distributor or retailer for the advertisement of specific products or services. To receive the cooperative advertising funds, the distributor or retailer may be required to provide proof that the advertising was performed and paid for. Sales Lead Generation Sales lead generation is the identification and gathering of contacts of people who have the characteristics of potential customers. TV commercial can be designed to encourage people to call for more information or submit information requests by other methods such as web sites or s. Interested Prospects An interested prospect is a person or company that has a current need or desire to purchase products or services or to perform desired actions (such as volunteer for a group cause). People who have taken the time and effort to watch a specific TV commercial and contact the company for more information have a good interest in the topic. The sales lead contact information can be obtained from call sheets or web page submission forms. Free samples of a product or information document (such as tips) may be used to motivate the viewer to contact and request more information. Qualifying Information Qualifying information is additional data about a contact that can be used to identify areas of interest and to assist in the communication process. If the TV commercial was designed to discuss an issue that is related to a product or service, the person who views the commercial may already have an interest in that subject. The response channel (such as an inbound call center) can be used to gather additional qualifying information. Products and Service Sales Product and service sales are transactions that transfer ownership or rights from one person or company to another person or company. TV ad campaigns can be designed to promote direct sales (telemarketing), or direct people to online stores to make purchases. Direct Sales Direct sales are the values that are received (usually in sales dollars) as a direct result of a marketing effort that is setup and controlled by a person or company. TV commercials may explain and help viewers to understand how a product or service can solve a problem or satisfy their needs, and offer ways the viewer can directly purchase the product. Online Purchases Online purchases are orders placed for products or services that are processed through the Internet. When providing an online promotional offer, a simple link (unique) can be assigned for the tracking of marketing success (conversion rates) for a TV advertising campaign. Increased Consumption TV commercials may be designed to define solutions to problems that require the viewer to use or consume additional products or services. For example, a TV commercial that shows a white paper on marketing may explain how to setup marketing campaigns for new types of customers. This would require the company to pay for additional broadcast services. Purchase Validation Purchase validation is the process of reviewing the actions and results of product or service purchases to confirm they were the best choice. If the purchase validation results in finding better or lower cost alternative choices, the purchaser may return the product or cancel the service. 18 Campaign Audience A campaign audience is a list or category of people who are likely to be interested or qualified to read, watch or listen to a promotional media message. The desired audience may be defined in terms of demographics, psychographics and market reach. Demographics A demographic is a classification of people (such as a viewing audience). Examples of demographic types include age range, gender, social classifications or combinations of multiple classifications. Psychographics Psychographics are the attitudes and lifestyle behaviors of a group of people or customers. Psychographic performance is a measure of the effectiveness of a promotional campaign that is based on the attitudes and lifestyle behaviors of a group of people or customers. Market Reach Market reach is the number of unique viewers that watch at least one minute of a media program across its total playing duration. Cumulative reach is the combined number of unique viewers that have seen at least one minute of a media program across its total playing duration. Broadcast Media Channels Broadcast media channels are the content transmission systems that distribute programs to viewers. TV ads may be distributed through television networks, on specific programs broadcasted by the networks, TV advertising networks or directly through local TV broadcasters. Network Selection Network selection is the ability of a company or system to identify which broadcast television network it desires to use. TV networks are companies that gather, produce and distribute content to multiple local broadcasters. TV networks include ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW, as well as others. Local TV Broadcasters Local TV broadcasters have advertising time slots (hold backs) that the networks allow them to use. By directly advertising through local TV broadcasters, it is possible to highly target TV ad campaigns. Local TV advertisers may also sell the ads below network cost. The key challenge of dealing with local broadcasters is the amount of time and resources required to create the insertion orders. TV Ad Networks Television ad networks are companies or groups that act on behalf of multiple advertisers to find and place ads to broadcast or distribution networks that participate in their ad network programs. Spot cable is the insertion of ads into cable TV system avails. Spot cable ads may be inserted into multiple cable television markets. A leading TV ad network company is NCC ( Another TV ad network is Google TV Advertising Network ( The Google TV Advertising Network is an extension of the Internet TV advertising ad bidding network. It has a substantial amount of advertising controls such as network selection and geographic regions, and it even provides real time campaign optimization options. Campaign Insertion Requirements Campaign requirements are rules or values that define when and if an advertising message can be inserted into a broadcast channel. TV ad insertion requirements may include specific programs, slot positions, insertion guarantees, optimal ad insertion and ad frequency limits. Program Selection Program selection is the designated media program or service into which the ads will be inserted. Program selections can range from specific programs (such as the Super Bowl) to program categories (such as comedy programs). Program types that are not suitable for insertion (such as adult content programs) may also be identified. Slot Position Slot position is the time period within a media program, such as a TV program, into which a media item (such as a TV commercial) will be inserted. Advertisers may allow a commercial to be inserted at any point within a program (natural delivery), or they may specify which slot, and the position within an available time slot, is the ad insertion point. 18 May 2010 Definitions FREE at

Natural delivery is the presentation of advertisements in a time or sequence similar to other types of advertisements in the same category. First in break is the first advertisement to run after a scheduled program begins. Last in break is the last advertisement to run after a scheduled program ends. An ad break position is a sequential location within an advertising time slot. Insertion Guarantees Companies that advertise may request or insist on ad insertion guarantees as in-store product promotional efforts may be timed with TV ad campaigns. Ads that are non-pre-emptible are guaranteed to be presented at an agreed upon time (will not be move to another time). Preemptible advertising allows a broadcaster to move a promotional ad presentation to other available presentation times or channels. Preemptible advertising insertion orders may cost less than non-preemptible insertion orders. Optimal ad insertion is the insertion of promotional advertisements in an efficient manner as determined by the broadcaster. Ad Frequency Ad frequency is the number of times the same ad is inserted or displayed over a period of time. Advertisers may desire that the same ads are displayed a maximum number of times (ad capping) over a certain time period. Run of Schedule (ROS) Run of schedule is an authorization from an advertiser to play their commercials at times that a network or broadcaster chooses (any time the network deems as available). Day Part Profile (Daypart) Daypart profiling is the process of changing marketing programs or processes during specific times of day. An example of daypart targeting is running breakfast ads in the morning and running lunch ads during the afternoon. Advertising Viewing Periods Advertising viewing periods are time intervals that are categorized by the number or percentage of viewers. Advertising viewing periods may be divided into peak (highest viewing) and off peak. Split Time Length Campaigns Split time-length campaigns are advertising campaigns that have more than one time length associated with their campaign rules. TV Ad Campaign Scheduling Ad campaign scheduling is the selection of time periods or events during which TV ad insertions may be performed. Run Dates Run dates are the authorized days that ad insertions may be performed. Event Scheduling Article Source: Advanced TV Advertising $34.99 printed $29.99 ebook Event scheduling is the assignment of specific events that enable the insertion of a TV commercial. An example of a scheduled TV ad insertion event is a televised sporting event overtime period. Viewers may be intensely focused on the television during these crucial periods of overtime. 20 May 2010 Definitions FREE at

Featured Article NAB 2010 Trade Show Summary - TV Industry Trends By: Lawrence Harte The NAB trade show can be a great indicator of industry trends for the television industry. Some of the trends we observed at the NAB show included new content monetization methods for existing video, mobile digital TV (MDTV), 3DTV, home media management, IPTV, Internet TV (OTT), workflow management integration, user generated content (UGC), Android operating systems, hybrid broadcast and broadband TV (HBBTV), and television widgets. Content Monetization Content monetization is any process that can be used to transform content into services that generate revenue. This can range from paid subscription services to ad revenue based content delivery. A growing number of companies are providing media enhancement tools and services that enhance content in a way that can generate new revenue streams. This includes converting TV programs into applications, opening e-commerce portals which content matches, and offering products or services. One of the key types of challenges to product placement advertising in TV content is identifying the times and graphic areas that are available for promotional media insertion. DigitalSmiths has developed a system that creates tracks of interstitial metadata that identify events and advertising insertion opportunities within promotional media. In addition to identifying graphic areas into which ads can be inserted, the DigitalSmiths system can also analyze facial expressions and speech audio to determine the context of the insertion opportunity. Digitalsmiths How can you know exactly what a consumer is watching without adding additional tags and data? The answer is to fingerprint each frame of the media. Bulldog United has developed a frame by frame fingerprinting technology that can be used to identify video content using watermarks. This is important because broadcasters may not allow or pass watermarking signals through their systems. The Bulldog system provides a fingerprinting data stream, which is less than 10 kbps, and can be used to identify exactly where the viewer has seen content (great for viewer tracking of ads). Bulldog A new revenue generation opportunity for TV broadcasters is to ad visual icons to media that identify to the viewer the availability of additional information (and value) within a video. When the viewer selects the icons (with a remote control or pointing device), new windows or menus appear, providing the viewer with new choices which also provide broadcasters or advertisers with new revenue generating opportunities. These new sources range from advertising revenue that is generated from extended viewing time (more ads are provided) to television commerce options (buying products displayed in the videos). The icons can be hidden during normal viewing to enable the viewer to enjoy the program without blocking the view. Mozaik developed screen bookmarking, which allows the viewer to return to a saved scene location, begin replay, and then turn on the visual tags so they can access the additional content and features. Visual Hot spots - Mozaik One of the ways to develop new revenue sources from existing content is through the addition of selectable services and transactions to existing video. Coincident TV has a system that adds monetization value to existing video content by identifying cue points within media that can be associated and linked with other content and services. The Coincident system allows for real time integration of video with other content sources such as social media. Coincident TV 22 May 2010 Definitions FREE at

Mobile Digital Television (MDTV) Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Mobile digital television is the provision of video broadcast signals to mobile devices using a digital transmission format. Companies demonstrating new types of content management systems and ad insertion systems are of key importance. How do you select and insert advertising videos (commercials) into mobile video streams? The answer is to use an intelligent media server that can dynamically select and stream ads. mdialog has developed a system that allows for the dynamic selection and insertion of video ads into mobile video streams. Mobile ads are different than TV ads as they have a built in response channel. This allows for highly interactive advertising messages, as some of the most effective ads are mobile video coupons. mdialog Three Dimensional Television (3DTV) Three dimensional television is the provision of video signals that allow one or more viewers to receive content that contains depth information. A common method of providing depth information is to send two visual signals (stereoscopic) allowing viewers (one viewer per display) to perceive depth from the differences between the left and right videos signals. 3D has been available since the 1950s and standard TVs can provide 3D signals through the use of 3D glasses. There are about 9 methods that can be used to create and broadcast 3D images (color, polarization). While there are many amazing demos of 3D content and significant predictions of 3DTVs (25% by really?), there appears to be little insight as to how 3DTV will generate revenue. Home Media Management Home media management continues to evolve with more simple systems that are starting to use portions of the digital living network alliance (DLNA) industry standard. Several companies, such as Microsoft and Ericsson, are using some DLNA elements in their home media systems. However, home media systems still seem to use a mix of proprietary protocols which may delay their overall acceptance (not really plug and play yet). Ericsson has developed a graphics based (no lingual required) system that allows people to easily find devices and content, and connect, play or transfer content using a simple visual display. Ericsson The number of subscribers on Internet protocol television (IPTV) systems continues to rapidly grow, and the types of devices that can connect to IPTV systems are increasing. Microsoft claims that they have the largest number of IPTV customers on their systems - approximately 5 million subscribers with 10 million devices (approx 2 IPTV devices per home). One of the key advances in the Microsoft Mediaroom system is the ability of the IPTV system to provide TV services to gaming controllers (xbox). Gaming devices are likely to become a leading type of viewing device in IPTV systems over the next few years, and the Microsoft Mediaroom system has been setup to manage the communication of these types of devices which need bandwidth allocation and prioritization. Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Television (Internet TV) Internet television is the provision of TV signals through broadband Internet connections (also called over the top television -OTT). Many new Internet TV providers are using standard set top boxes such as Roku and BoxBee. Cable, satellite, and other types of TV broadcasters are searching for how they can expand their broadcast services into profitable paid (subscription based) Internet TV services. Advertising funded revenue models used by some Internet TV broadcasters are not currently generating enough revenue to cover the cost of broadcasting. The NeuLion Internet TV system is used by some TV broadcasters to offer paid subscription models through the Internet for their network content. The broadcaster provides content to NeuLion and the NeuLion system delivers the content to viewers through broadband Internet connections and manages the subscription services. This allows broadcasters to immediately begin to generate profits when they deliver TV content through the Internet. NeuLion For companies that want to manage their own Internet TV systems, service consultants such as Rawvoice assist companies in the development of their own Internet TV channels (white label channels). 25 Workflow Management Workflow management is the tasks and processes that are necessary to coordinate the flow of work between participants (employees, contractors and vendors) to perform projects or assignments. It manages the flow of information from system to system, essentially checking off the tasks associated with any process as it goes. TV production workflow is becoming more complicated as there are more participants in the workflow process, and locations and systems can vary dramatically. To effectively provide workflow TV production, web based workflow scheduling can be used. Workflow systems are evolving to allow for interconnection with many new types of companies and systems. This is why Scheduall created the web based workflow system. The system can be setup to assign and track the many types of skills and processes that are used, requiring less people to manage the workflow system. Scheduall A key focus of workflow production for TV systems is the standardization of supply chain management. According to Ascent Media, the supply chain needs to be open and transparent and, as such, their system uses a modular design and has interfaces that allow for integration with multiple suppliers utilizing different workflow systems. The system also manages metadata during content production to help organize and control workflow components. Ascent Media User Generated Content (UGC) User generated content is information that is produced by content consumers. Some of the emerging innovations in UGC include content identification and video production tools. A growing source of content that is broadcast on TV systems is consumer generated content. Many of the new mobile devices have built in video recording capability and some even have HD capability. Some of the most valuable news videos are likely to come from consumers. The availability of many new video sources can make program management positions within broadcasting companies nightmarish. It is not possible to go through thousands of video submissions to see which videos are valuable. This means that systems need to be developed that can quickly ingest, identify, categorize and prioritize consumer generated content. Harris created a full-motion video asset management engine (FAME) system that can merge location data (GPS information) along with other data (metadata) to be used for the identification and classification of contributed content. Harris =2570

Some key challenges to the acquisition of good consumer generated content are limited knowledge of video production and the availability of the tools necessary for content production. Howcast (a video hosting company) has created and provides scripts, tools and step graphics that people can use to create and enhance their videos. Using these tools, content contributors can add significant quality to their video production through fairly simple media production tools. Howcast Android Operating System Many companies are starting to use the Android operating system. While Android was originally used for mobile telephones, it is now being used in TV set top boxes and even some netbook computers. There have been comments that while the Android operating system is an open source, Google still maintains strong controls over Android, making some companies uncomfortable due to communication difficulties Google can present. Ericsson has a remote media controller in the home which is based on Android software. Hybrid Broadcast and Broadband (HBB) Hybrid broadcasting is a mixture of broadcast media transmission and Internet connections on a broadcast system. Hybrid broadcasting allows for the embedding of media and links in the broadcast signal, which can be used to enhance the viewer's TV media experience. Upon viewer interaction with the embedded objects (such as links), the TV can be redirected to other sources (such as Interactive ads). How can TV broadcasters add new services to their systems without an expensive system upgrade? Broadcast TV and Internet TV can be combined in a hybrid system. The Sezmi system uses an advanced receiver and distribution device to gather broadcast programming in the home and retransmit it to the viewing set top box, which can select from the broadcast channels or from Internet TV programming. The system allows the TV broadcaster to distribute programming on a wholesale basis, and the consumer benefits from a large mix of broadcast and on-demand Internet TV programming. Sezmi How can you get new revenue from existing programming? BestTV has created a system that allows broadcasters to add new subscription services to existing programs by adding additional programs and applications to existing content in non-linear form through other channels such as the Internet (Hybrid broadcast and broadband - HBB). Using the hybrid system, broadcasters can increase viewing times without increasing their need for bandwidth. TV show owners can create their own non-linear subscription channels, extending their brands and generating revenue for both the TV show owners and the broadcasters by selling the added content as a subscription service. BesTV TV Widgets Television widgets (TV Widgets) are independent software applications that can be added to TV systems to provide new features and services. Some types of TV widgets include news widgets, weather widgets and product widgets. These widgets may process information that can be viewed on or within the video display. Some TV platforms are closed systems which require developers to create widgets in multiple versions. White TV Platforms will eventually become standardized. Opera's TV Widget software development kit produces TV widgets for multiple platforms which can have unique protocols and implementations. To help developers and broadcasters, Opera has also produced a library of widgets that can be used or adapted for new features and services. Opera Some key challenges include the development, operation (which types of televisions or set top boxes can they operate on), and testing of TV Widgets. There are already 3 to 5 million TVs deployed that have the capability of running TV Widgets. The Yahoo TV Widget system is an open platform that allows many companies to participate and share in development efforts. In addition to providing a free TV Widget software development kit, the Yahoo Connected TV system has been setup to allow developers to test download their widgets on their own TVs. Yahoo connectedtv.yahoo.com/services/tv-widgets TV Widgets can be used as tools for advertisers to reach consumers directly on their televisions. Middleware from Nordija (pronounced as Nor'di'ya) can be used to develop widgets that allow hotels, multiple dwelling units and casinos to get promotional messages to TV viewers. Broadcasters and advertisers can customize TV Widgets to match the specific needs and interests of their targeted viewers. Nordija also has a pool of TV Widgets (a Widget Consortium) that allows for the shared usage of TV Widgets among broadcasters. Acumenlink 26 May 2010 Definitions FREE at

Featured Article A Solution to the IPTV Cat 5 Cable Bandwidth Limits in Hotels and other Shared TV Systems By: Gregg Kelley, Lynx Broadband How can you provide TV service to hundreds of TVs in a building that only has Cat 5 cable installed? One solution is to use RF baluns to convert the coax signals to balanced signals that travel on twisted pair cable. IPTV is also an option, but the equipment can be expensive and bandwidth requirements are substantial - about 4 Mbps for digital channels and 15 Mbps for HD channels. In commercial applications where lots of TVs are watching lots of different channels, the aggregate bandwidth can exceed the capabilities of the data network. An RF balun system makes it possible to deliver hundreds of digital channels on twisted pair cable, without using any bandwidth on the network. For example, the Lynx Television Network manufactured by Lynx Broadband delivers 288 channels of digital television over distances up to 295 feet (90 meters) or 78 analog channels over the same distance. For applications using the full 860 MHz CATV spectrum, the performance capabilities are 528 digital channels or 134 analog channels over 220 feet. Lynx networks are installed in more than 50 U.S. hospitals and hotels, including the Sheraton Hotel at the Baltimore Washington Airport. The hotel did not install coax because it planned to use a streaming video delivery system. But shortly before opening they encountered technical and availability issues. Installing the Lynx product let them open on time, with full television service available in all the guest rooms. According to Dale Sennie, the network engineer for the hotel management company, the total cost of the satellite TV headend and all the Lynx equipment was only $40,000 (approximately $200 per room for the 203 room installation). The diagram below shows how the television signals are transported through the hotel. A cabling closet is strategically located in the Figure 1, Television Signals. 30 Figure 2, Dale Sennie with Lynx Video Hubs in a Wiring Closet Source Lynx Broadband middle of each of the hotel's three floors and is easily within cabling transmission distances to guest rooms on each floor. Hubs and Converters A sixteen port hub in the wiring closet converts two coax input signals into sixteen Cat 5 output signals. More specifically, sixteen RF baluns inside the hubs convert the unbalanced 75 ohm coaxial signals into 100 ohm balanced signals that travel on pair four of the Cat 5 cable. Figure 4, Wallplate Connector Source Lynx Broadand Benefits of RF balun technology Because RF baluns do not use any bandwidth on the network itself, they eliminate quality of service problems that could develop when of IPTV and data delivery compete for limited bandwidth on the datacom network. They are also less expensive than most IPTV delivery systems. The technology also has several advantages relative to coax. It is much more flexible for handling moves, adds, and changes, and it is usually less expensive in retrofit applications. Equally important, it is more reliable than coax because it's tap and drop design eliminates the taps and splitters located behind walls and above ceilings in traditional "tap and drop" coax systems. Fewer taps and splitters means fewer connectors and thus fewer problems. Finally, using RF baluns creates a "technology bridge" to IPTV. It is inevitable that IPTV will become less expensive and less bandwidth intensive over time. So it is only prudent to "future proof" the building by having twisted pair cable connected to all the TVs. Figure 3, 16 Port Hub. Source Lynx Broadband At the point of use, a Decora style wallplate connector (shown below) converts the balanced Cat 5 signal back to an unbalanced coaxial signal that is delivered to the TV. A wallplate cover then goes over the connector. GREGG KELLEY is National Sales & Marketing Manager for Lynx Broadband in Burnsville, MN.
