17 DVB-S2 Extensions Introduction of a new commercial service is an opportunity to think about other technology improvements to piggy back First one is the way in which Ultra-HD will be physically transmitted: signal modulation Extensions to DVB-S2 are discussed to provide a 0-10% DTH improvement w.r.t to S2 17

18 Broadcast Standard HEVC is a toolbox An actual broadcast profile needs to be defined and framed into DVB Implementation Guidelines Which Colour Space? 8 or 10 bit? For Chrominance and/or Luminance? Which support for High Dynamic Range (HDR)? Which Framerate? 50/60 Hz. Should we support HFR 100/120 Hz? Which audio format? Do we need new metadata? Who defines the profile: Broadcasters individually, Associations,. 18

19 HEVC Patent Pool HEVC Patent Pool is required to provide certainty to all actors before launch Encoder Manufacturers / Broadcasters / Chipset and Receiver Manufacturers Call for essential patents launched on 26 th June 2012 by MPEG-LA What licensing conditions? Will there be a usage based fee or one-off fee? Royalty amount? 19

20 Professional Interface So far there is no standardised live interface to carry Ultra HD signals No way to connect Ultra HD equipment in studios Workaround by using files (not for live) using 4 HD links via 3G-SDI interfaces Standard is required to build/upgrade studios => move from coaxial to fiber-optic cabling SMPTE will be working on this. 20

21 Availability of Live Encoders So far all tests have been done with file based workflows Real-time encoders are not available Currently encoding 1 minute of Ultra HD content takes 8-10 hours offline HEVC encoders need 10 times the processing power of an equivalent H.264 encoder => UHD HEVC encoder will need 40 times the power of an HD H.264 encoder 21

22 Receiver Chipsets Only a single prototype decoder chip (SOC) currently available: Broadcom BCM 7445 HEVC 28nm process technology DMIPS Quad-Core ARMv7 CPU Need support for 50/60fps at least for broadcasting 22

23 Availability of consumer STBs HEVC chipsets are required to build STBs for consumers Due to non-availability of chipsets in quantities consumer STBs will not appear before the second-half of 2014 Major STB manufacturers have started working on prototypes 23

24 HDMI Version 2.0 Interface Consumer STBs and TVs require a new HDMI interface that supports Ultra-HD at 50/60Hz Version 1.4 is limited to Ultra HD at 30Hz HDMI Forum is working on Version 2.0 Support for 2160P60 Increase the overall transfer rate to 18 Gbit/s* May update link protection to newer version of HDCP Requirement for Higher Frame Rates may delay the introduction of Ultra HD * preliminary information: subject to change 24
