5 Project Goal 5 The goal of this project was to explore the unique characteristics of OLEDs through luminaire design.

6 Method 6 I. Identify the distinguishing characteristics of OLEDs that make them desirable in developing lighting markets II. Identify the best areas for lighting applications for current OLED technology III. Develop and test concepts for an OLED luminaire IV. Create a working gprototype of luminaire using OLED panels V. Install luminaire in the LRC s modular DC-grid concept room

9 Design Opportunities for OLEDs 9 The designed luminaire will be integrated into the LRC's modular DC-grid concept room; therefore, the focus will be on ceilingand wall-mounted fixtures. 12 Digital Modeling 12 Digital rendering allows for visualization of material a and color options.

13 Prototyping 13 Prototypes allow exploration of the physical form in full scale and help to evolve the design. Requirement: Americans with Disabilities Act requires outward extension of no more than 4" if luminaire is mounted below 6' 8" above floor. All of the designs have an arc of 4" or less from the wall.

15 Survey 15 A small-group survey: To understand user preference (Vote for favorite fixture) Queried specific features movability, modularity, shape

16 Survey Results 16 Majority winner Ceiling-mounted wave When polled, subjects responded nearly equally to circles and squares in this design. Squares were chosen based on timely availability of OLEDs. The survey also revealed that modularity is a desirable feature in a light fixture. How can modularity be incorporated into the design?
