5 1 REF-1801 HD/SD Frame Reference Module 1.1 Introduction The REF-1801 provides distribution of a universal reference signal (URS) to all the cards with the same Densité frame, while generatg a selectable reference signal for external use. The unique URS concept provides significant advantages as it digitally generates reference signals and simplifies ter-format processg by usg a unique reference signal for all video and audio frame rates. The REF-1801 uses the SMPTE-318 standard, which allows for perfect audio / video phasg. 6 1.4 Card Front Edge Layout Status Select REF-1801 Status LED SELECT button 1.5 Applications Application 1: Referencg converters and frame sync modules In this application, the REF-1801 accepts a reference put and generates a URS4D signal that is distributed to all Densité slots with the same frame. This is the most basic application for our reference card. 7 Application 2: Slavg cards a frame to another REF equipped frame In this application, the reference signal is distributed order to slave another Densité frame. The ability to carry time code and SMPTE-318 formation will allow the slaved frame to operate with the same A/V phasg formation as the master frame. This might be very useful, especially when the 3 rd party equipment needs a tri-level sync reference signal. 8 2 Installation 2.1 Unpackg The followg items should be cluded the REF-1801 package: REF-1801 HD / SD Frame Reference Module REF-1801-SRP rear panel User manual 2.2 Installation the Densité frame The REF-1801 must be mounted a DENSITÉ-2 frame. The stallation cludes both the REF-1801 module, and the rear panel module. It is not necessary to switch off the frame s power when stallg or removg the card. Detailed structions for stallg cards and their associated rear panels the Densité frame are given the Densité Frame manual. 2.3 Connection All connections are made on the rear panel: Connect the put reference signal to the BNC marked REF A loop-through is provided, which should be termated if unused. 9 3 Operation 3.1 Control Options The REF-1801 has two primary control terfaces: The local control panel attached to the Densité frame s controller Remote control usg Miranda s icontrol system These will be explaed detail the followg sections. 3.2 Local control usg the Densité frame control panel Push the SELECT button on the REF-1801 card edge (see Section 1.4) to assign the local control panel to operate the REF Use the control panel buttons to navigate through the menu, as described below. All of the cards stalled a Densité frame are connected to the frame s controller card, which handles all teraction between the cards and the outside world. There are no operatg controls located on the cards themselves. The controller supports remote operation via its Ethernet ports, and local operation usg its tegrated control panel. The local control panel is fastened to the controller card by a hged connector, and when stalled is located the front center of the frame, positioned front of the power supplies. The panel consists of a display unit capable of displayg two les of text, each 16 characters length, and five pushbuttons. The panel is assigned to operate any card the frame by pushg the SELECT button on the front edge of that card. Pushg the CONTROLLER button on the control panel selects the Controller card itself. The STATUS LED on the selected card flashes yellow. ESC - + SELECT CONTROLLER The local control panel displays a menu that can be navigated usg the four pushbuttons located beneath the display. The functionality of the pushbuttons is as follows: [CTRL] Selects the controller card for status monitorg and adjustment [+] [ ] Used for menu navigation and value modification [SELECT] Gives access to the next menu level. When a parameter value is shown, pushg this button once enables modification of the value usg the [+] and [ ] buttons; a second push confirms the new value [ESC] Cancels the effect of parameter value changes that have not been confirmed; pushg [ESC] causes the parameter to revert to its former value. Pushg [ESC] moves the user back up to the previous menu level. At the ma menu, [ESC] does not exit the menu system. To exit, re-push the [SELECT] button for the card beg controlled. If no controls are operated for 30 seconds, the controller reverts to its normal standby status, and the selected card s STATUS LED reverts to its normal operatg mode. REF

10 3.2.1 Status LED The status monitor LED is located on the front card-edge of the REF-1801, and is visible through the front access door of the DENSITÉ frame. This multi-color LED dicates module status by color, and by flashg/steady illumation, accordg to the chart. The chart also dicates fault reportg for this card on the DENSITÉ frame s serial and GPI terfaces. 11 3.2.2 Menu for local control The REF-1801 has operatg parameters which may be adjusted locally at the controller card terface. After pressg the SELECT button on the REF-1801 module, use the keys on the local control panel (described above) to step through the displayed menu and adjust the parameters. The menu is shown below. 12 3.3 Remote control usg icontrol The operation of the REF-1801 may be controlled usg Miranda s icontrol system. This manual describes the control panels associated with the REF-1801 and their use. Please consult the icontrol User s Guide for formation about settg up and operatg icontrol. In icontrol Navigator or icontrol Websites, double-click on the REF-1801 icon to open the control panel The icontrol graphic terface wdow The basic wdow structure for the REF-1801 is shown figure 3.1. The wdow identification le at the top gives the card type (REF-1801), and the slot number which the card is stalled the Densité frame. The top section displays icons on the left. These icons report card communication status, put reference signal format and status, and output reference signal status. Icon # REF-1801

13 Move the cursor over an icon to see its current status the message area below the icons. If there is an error status, the message will appear automatically. Tabs are provided to give access to the various controls. Click on a tab to access it Note that the appearance of the tabs will vary dependg on the version of icontrol that is use: Double row of tabs, with all tabs showg Sgle row of tabs, with arrow buttons to move along until desired tab shows Both versions are shown figure The contents of the selected tab, with operatg controls and status monitors as required. 4. The Load Factory button. Clickg this button will reset all REF-1801 parameters to factory-default values, overridg settgs made the control panels. REF

14 3.3.2 Input tab Reference Source The pulldown selects the reference source for this REF The choices are: Auto Use the external reference if available; switch to the ternal reference if the external reference is lost or unavailable. External use the reference connected to the rear panel Internal use the ternal reference source Time Code The Timecode Source pulldown selects the source of timecode that will be serted the outgog reference signals from this REF The choices are: Auto Use LTC if available, if not, VITC. VITC extract timecode from the reference put LTC use the timecode connected to the LTC put on the rear panel. The current status of time code available at the REF-1801 put is shown the LTC Status and VITC Status areas Valid (green icon): valid time code detected at the put Figure 3.2 Input tab Phase error (red icon): SMPTE-12 specifies the phase relation between LTC and video. If the LTC received does not match this alignment wdow, the card will flag this error. Frame error (red icon): The time code must match the put reference frame rate. If not, a error is flagged. Absent (red icon): no time code detected at the put Note: The error detection algorithm uses the current reference format. So, when usg ternal reference, all formation extracted from the put is out of phase, the card can then flag errors even if it s not the case. 10 REF-1801

15 3.3.3 Mode tab URS (Universal Reference ) is a Miranda-proprietary reference that is used with a Densité frame. It is generated by the REF-1801 (which must be located slot 10), and distributed to other cards the frame via the frame s midplane. URS Generation Mode The pulldown allows selection of the operatg mode of the URS generator the REF-1801: Normal In normal mode, the URS signal generated contas only the synchronization signals that match the reference format used by the REF That is, if put is NTSC, only 29.97Hz synchronization signals are sent. Free Run If the freerun mode is selected, all URS synchronization signals are generated, even the frame-ratemismatched ones. So, the same frame, some cards can work 25Hz frame rate and other cards 29.97Hz. The phase relation between these two frame rates will be arbitrary, thus the name freerun. Figure 3.3 Mode tab Output tab The Output tab provides resources to configure the sync outputs that are enabled by the SPG option. The controls on this tab are not functional if the SPG option has not been enabled Each of the two sync outputs can be configured dependently. Format the pulldown selects the format of the sync output. Available choices are: Black Burst Black Burst 50 Tri-Level 1080i59.94 Tri-Level 1080i50 Tri-Level 720p59.94 Tri-Level 720p50 DARS 48 khz Word Clock 48 khz Note that not all of these output choices will be available at all times. The nomal range is +/- one frame, and is dicated ( les) at the ends of the slider The current value is shown the data box at the right side of the slider. The value can be changed by clickg and draggg the slider, or by typg a value directly to the data box. Horizontal (μsec) the slider selects the horizontal offset between the reference put to the REF-1801 and the output beg configured. The nomal range is 0 to 1 le, and is dicated ( μsec) at the ends of the slider The current value is shown the data box at the right side of the slider. The value can be changed by clickg and draggg the slider, or by typg a value directly to the data box. 12 REF-1801

17 3.3.5 SPG Option tab The SPG option adds sync pulse generation capability to the REF To activate this option, you must obta a licence key from Miranda Technologies Inc. Type the licence key the Enter Key box and then click on Enable Option to enable the option s features Once the Key has been entered, and the SPG option is activated, the sync pulse generation features of the REF will be available. Figure 3.5 SPG Option tab Alarms tab Click the Alarm Config button to open the Alarm Configuration for REF panel a new wdow. This panel allows the alarm reportg of the REF to be configured. The panel is organized columns. Status/Name This contas an expandable tree listg all the alarms reported by this card. Each alarm name cludes an icon that shows its current status The Overall alarm and GSM contribution columns conta pulldown lists that allow the level of contribution of each dividual alarm to the alarm named the column headg to be set. Overall Alarm This column allows configuration of the contribution of each dividual alarm to the Overall Alarm associated with this card. The Overall Alarm is shown the upper left corner of the icontrol panel, and also appears at the bottom of the Status/Name column. Figure 3.6 Alarms tab REF

18 GSM Contribution This column allows configuration of the contribution of each dividual alarm to the GSM Alarm Status associated with this card. GSM is a dynamic register of all icontrol system alarms, and is also an alarm provider for external applications. The possible values for this contribution are related to the Overall alarm contribution: If the Overall alarm contribution is selected as Disabled, the GSM alarm contribution can be set to any available value If the Overall alarm contribution is selected as any level other than disabled, the GSM contribution is forced to follow the Overall Alarm. Figure 3.7 Alarm Configuration panel Levels associated with these alarms: The pulldown lists may conta some or all of the followg options: The alarm makes no contribution (black icon) The alarm is of mor importance (yellow icon) The alarm is of major importance (orange icon) The alarm is of critical importance (red icon) The alarm exists but has no effect (used for text and composite alarms) Shortcut: if you click one of the columns beside REF-1801 the Status/Name column (where there is no pulldown shown), you will open an visible pulldown that lets you assign a level to all alarms that column simultaneously. Log Events icontrol matas a log of alarm events associated with the card. The log is useful for troubleshootg and identifyg event sequences. Click the checkbox to enable loggg of alarm events for each dividual alarm. At the bottom of the wdow are several other controls 14 REF-1801

19 Copy to other cards Click this button to open a panel that allows the alarm configuration set for this card to be copied to another REF-1801 card. Select one or more destation cards from the list the wdow by clickg the checkboxes, or all of them by clickg the All checkbox Figure 3.8 Copy to other cards wdow Get alarm keys Click this button to open a save dialog where you can save a file contag a list of all alarms on this card and their current values, along with an Alarm Key for each. The alarm keys are useful for system tegration and troubleshootg. The file is saved Excel.csv format Figure 3.9 Get alarm keys save dialogue OK, Apply, Cancel OK accepts the settgs and closes the wdow once the card confirms that there are no errors. Apply accepts the settgs, but leaves the wdow open Cancel closes the wdow without applyg any changes, and leaves the previous settgs tact. REF

20 3.3.7 Info tab When the REF-1801 is cluded an icontrol environment, certa formation about the card should be available to the icontrol system. The user can enter labels and comments that will make this card easy to identify a complex setup. This formation is entered to data boxes the Info control panel. Label: Short Label Source ID Comments: type the label that appear for this card when it appears icontrol applications type the short-form label that icontrol uses some cases (8 characters) type a descriptive name for this card type any desired text The remag data boxes show manufacturg formation about this card. 21 Remote System Admistration opens the Jog Locators wdow, which lists remote lookup services to which this REF is registered.
