6. Time Averaging System (TAS) The PT 150 employs a Time Averaging System (TAS). TAS averages the distance between schedule times to provide a seamless transition as opposed to a stepped transition found in many other aquarium lights that provide a sunrise/sunset capability. By averaging the time between schedule points, the light slowly increases/decreases in increments small enough to simulate seamless transition. Example with TAS: Schedule Point 1 = 08:00 Schedule Point 2 = 10:00 80% 20% = 60% 10:00 08:00 = 120 minutes 60(%) 120 (mins) = 0.5 (%) Therefore, the brightness would reduce at a rate of 0.5% per minute. As the system has a minimum increment of 2%, the brightness would reduce by 2% every 4 minutes. Example without TAS: Schedule Point 1 = 08:00 Schedule Point 2 = 10:00 Without TAS, the system would simply stay at 80% until 10:00 where it would drop to 20% in a single step. 11
7. Acclimating If you are retrofitting the light to an existing reef tank (with corals) and the brightness is roughly the same (e.g. replacing metal halides with a Platinum Series LED), you should be able to go straight to the pre programmed (auto) schedule. If you are upgrading from fluorescents (T5 or T8), you may wish to decrease the overall brightness and gradually raise over a period of weeks to allow the corals to acclimatise to the increase in intensity. This will reduce the chance of any bleaching or undesired effects on the corals from a sudden increase in intensity. As a guide when upgrading from fluorescents, Marintech suggest that you begin by using the below settings in the table (Note: this is a guide only and may need alteration depending on coral placement etc.): Depth of Tank Distance from Water Surface Week 1 2 Brightness (All channels) Week 3 4 Brightness (All channels) Week 5 6 Brightness (All channels) Week 7 8 Brightness (All channels) 18 15cm 30% 40% 50% 60% 20cm 40% 50% 60% 70% 25cm 50% 60% 70% 80% 30cm 60% 70% 80% 90% 24 (2ft) 15cm 60% 70% 80% 90% 20cm 70% 80% 90% Auto 25cm 80% 90% Auto Auto 30cm 90% Auto Auto Auto 30 + (2½ft+) 15cm 90% Auto Auto Auto 20cm Auto Auto Auto Auto 25cm Auto Auto Auto Auto 30cm Auto Auto Auto Auto Table 4 Acclimation Guidance To program the unit for acclimating, simply follow the steps listed in section 5, creating only 2 schedule points per channel; one schedule point at 0% and the other schedule point at the desired level based on the guidance provide in table 4. 12
Acclimation example: Tank is 18 deep and the light is hung 20cm above the water surface Week 1 2. Schedule Point Brightness Time Schedule Point Brightness Time Schedule Point Brightness A0on A B0on B C0on C A1on A B1on B C1on C A2of N/A N/A B2of N/A N/A C2of N/A N/A A3of N/A N/A B3of N/A N/A C3of N/A N/A A4of N/A N/A B4of N/A N/A C4of N/A N/A A5of N/A N/A B5of N/A N/A C5of N/A N/A A6of N/A N/A B6of N/A N/A C6of N/A N/A A7of N/A N/A B7of N/A N/A C7of N/A N/A A8of N/A N/A B8of N/A N/A C8of N/A N/A A9of N/A N/A B9of N/A N/A C9of N/A N/A Table 5 Acclimation Example Time Using the settings from table 4 (and the example from table 5) as a guide will ensure that the corals can acclimate appropriately. This method would also be appropriate for planted tanks to avoid burning the plants. For fish only systems, cichlids etc., this method is not required as the maximum brightness setting will not affect the fish if upgrading from a system of lower brightness. If you are concerned about how to place the light and acclimation issues, please contact us. 13
8. Temperature Controller The PT 150 contains a temperature controller which protects the unit from overheating. In the event that the unit overheats (possibly due to inadequate ventilation or used in an environment with an ambient temperature above 40 C), the temperature controller will turn off the unit to protect it from damage. The overheat protection will engage when the unit reaches 60 C and will disengage when the unit returns to below 50 C. If this occurs, you will need to identify the reason for the unit overheating and employ measures to ensure that this is rectified (increase ventilation and/or install cooling in the room to bring ambient temperature to below 40 C). It could also be caused by excessive dust build up on the fans which can be cleaned using a clean (new) paint brush or air compressor (ensure the fan is held in a stationary position if cleaning with compressed air). The PT 150 temperature can be checked using the remote control. To check the current temperature of the unit: 1. Press the TIME/TEMP button twice. 2. The current temperature will be displayed on the screen (in C). 14
9. Hanging Kit The Platinum Series PT 150 is supplied with a hanging kit. The hanging kit consists of 2 stainless steel hooks and cable with securing devices to shorten or lengthen the cable based on the application. Marintech suggests the use of the Qubelok system to build a suitable frame if you are unable to hang the unit from the roof (much like the picture below). When hanging the unit from the roof, additional hooks will be required to secure into the roof and chain (or similar) required to extend the hanging kit. The chain is simply connected to the hooks supplied in the hanging kit and then onto hooks secured into the roof (not supplied). There is no optimal height for hanging the lights, however, Marintech suggest that 15 20cm from the aquarium glass is a good starting point. You may need to raise or lower the light depending on your tank depth and width. If you are not getting the spread you desire, raise the light. Conversely, if you are not getting the desired light penetration, lower the light. The hanging kit provides the most flexibility and is Marintech s preferred option for mounting LED aquarium lights above tanks. 15
10. Linking Multiple Units The Platinum Series features a unique linking system to enable multiple units to be operated by the one remote. To link units to the one controller, simply follow the below steps: To control an individual light or one set of lights: 1. Turn one unit on at a time using the switch on the side of the unit, switching the other unit off after the ID has been set. 2. Press the ID button twice. 3. Select o000 using the Up and Down arrows. 4. Press the OK/Back button. 5. Set the time as per section 3 Setting the Time. 6. Repeat with remaining lights. To control multiple singles or multiple sets of lights: 1. Turn one unit on at a time using the switch on the side of the unit, switching the other unit off after the ID has been set. 2. Press the ID button twice. 3. Select a desired number between using the Up and Down arrows ( o000 o255 ) unique to the single or set. 4. Press the OK/Back button. 5. Set the time as per section 3 Setting the Time. 6. Repeat with remaining lights. 16
11. Troubleshooting Issue Possible solution/s 1. Light not responding to remote Switch the light off and back on using the switch on the side of the unit. 2. Unit Overheating Inadequate ventilation increase ventilation. Ambient room temperature is too high provide room cooling to bring the ambient temperature below 40 C. Build up of dust on cooling fan intake/s clean with a paint brush (new) or compressed air. Ensure the fan is held in a stationary position if cleaning with compressed air. 3. Auto schedule not running Ensure mode 0 is selected. 4. Corals reacting badly after light is installed The PT 150 is an extremely powerful light. As such, when converting from T5 or T8 fluorescents, corals may react badly (e.g. closed up or bleaching) if the light is too bright. Follow the acclimation guide to ensure this does not occur. 17
