3 1. Purpose The purpose of this design practice note is to clarify the MTM requirements for Signalling and High Voltage equipment enclosure nomenclature for use by designers, constructors and contractors. 2. Scope This document applies to the design and commissioning of new installations and where renewals upgrade to new equipment enclosures on the MTM network by Renewals and Project works. 3. Abbreviations and Acronyms AIS DPN F FGR FSS GR HV JLI MB MTM MURL NME OH PTV RMD SER SSS REB RFI TF TR UPS As In Service Design Practice Note High Voltage Transformer Level Crossing Box (includes associated Track Equipment and Battery Boxes) Flinders Street Station Signal Control High Voltage Switches and associated equipment (including Transformers) Jolimont Station Module Box Metro Trains Melbourne Melbourne Underground Rail Loop North Melbourne Station Overhead Public Transport Victoria Richmond Station Signal Equipment Room Southern Cross Station Relocatable Equipment Building Request For Information Track Feed Track Relay Uninterruptible Power Supply VRIOGS Victorian Rail Industry Operators Group Standards ZB Zone Box/Room (all boxes and rooms other than SER or FGR) PRINTOUT MAY NOT BE UP-TO-DATE; REFER TO METRO INTRANET FOR THE LATEST VERSION Page 3 of 9
4 4. Definitions and Responsibilities The following persons are to note and comply with the terms of this Design Practice Note: 1) Signal Designers shall incorporate requirements into all new equipment enclosures; 2) Project Managers shall ensure requirements are incorporated into project scope of works and make the Signal Designers, Reviewers, Approvers and Signal Maintenance aware of the requirement. 5. Background The current PTV controlled standards for Victoria (VRIOGS) does not provide guidance on nomenclature convention to be used relating to Signalling and HV location equipment boxes or rooms. There is a plethora of practices in existence, with a minimum of 15 different combinations in use for location enclosure naming alone. The following is a range of location enclosure names based on current practices: 1) Upper left most relay name used for location enclosure; 2) Highest signal number associated with the enclosure; 3) Highest track name associated with the enclosure; 4) Closest signal name associated with the enclosure; 5) Closest track name associated with the enclosure; 6) Level crossing road name associated with the enclosure, and; 7) Suffix for enclosure examples: - FGR, GR, TR, TF, F, UPS, MB, ZB, REB, SER etc. There is no consistency with the naming of Signalling or HV equipment enclosures and individual designers/constructors have tailored the names to suit their own needs. This has led to some confusion within the industry as to the correct format to be used, with the question being raised through the RFI process for direction in this matter. Discussion has taken place within Signal Engineering and opinions sought from other departments within MTM and some independent contractors to garner thoughts on how to apply a coherent naming convention for location equipment boxes and rooms. V/Line has also been contacted in respect to this issue, primarily so that this DPN can be taken forward with the aim of introducing the convention herein into VRIOGS Standard Rail Signalling Naming Conventions. 6. The Issue Historically the naming of equipment rooms and enclosures has been left to the individual designer/constructor and has given rise to some level of poor industry practice in application. Provision of guidance to designers and constructors relating to naming of MTM infrastructure, in particular the naming of location equipment enclosures and equipment rooms is required. PRINTOUT MAY NOT BE UP-TO-DATE; REFER TO METRO INTRANET FOR THE LATEST VERSION Page 4 of 9
5 7. MTM Requirements This DPN seeks to provide consistent nomenclature use for the naming of all MTM Signalling and HV location equipment enclosures going forward. Following the discussions mentioned above, the consensus of opinion expressed a clear need to standardise the nomenclature used to name Signalling and HV equipment enclosures. The equipment enclosure naming convention shall be used where signalling infrastructure changes are implemented due to project and replacement programme works. New, replaced and/or augmented Signalling and HV equipment locations/rooms fall within this category. The naming convention shall consist of three discreet identifiers, these being the Line Code, Distance Number and Type of Enclosure. Refer to the following Appendices for details for:- Appendix A Metropolitan Train Network Line Codes Appendix B Train Network Line Code Diagrams Appendix C Naming Convention Examples The distance number identifier shall be produced using the same convention as that used for other lineside structures (i.e. OH stanchions), this being hundreds of feet from FSS. MTM requirement for the naming convention falls into two categories, these being Signalling and HV. The standard nomenclature to be used for signalling equipment enclosures shall be: FGR; ZB; SER, and; UPS. The standard nomenclature to be used for HV equipment enclosures shall be: HV, and; F. Where there are 2 or more boxes at each location the names shall be suffixed with (1), (2) etc. PRINTOUT MAY NOT BE UP-TO-DATE; REFER TO METRO INTRANET FOR THE LATEST VERSION Page 5 of 9
