12 CONNECTING THE POWER SUPPLY Connecting The Power Spply Adjst the VOLTAGE SELECT switch 1 to the reqired voltage, then firmly psh the mains connector into the socket 2. Use only the power cable provided. 1 Ensre that the power otlet incldes a grond connection as this eqipment MUST be earthed. 2 Handle the power cable careflly and avoid sharp bends. Do not se a damaged power cable. 14 Control panel 1 POWER Switches the projector on and off (STANDBY). 2 INPUT Switches to the next inpt sorce. 3 AUTO SYNC Re-synchronises with the crrent inpt signal. 4 ASPECT Changes the aspect ratio. 5 CENTER LENS Centers the lens. 6 PIC MUTE Shows and hides the projected image. When OFF, the light sorce is completely switched off and the screen is black. 7 MENU Displays and exits the OSD. 8 Arrow bttons & ENTER Navigation bttons sed to highlight men entries in the OSD. Press ENTER to open or execte the highlighted men entry. 9 EXIT Exits the crrent OSD page and enters the level above. 10 LENS SHIFT arrow bttons Each of these bttons moves the lens in the specified direction. 11 FOCUS pls and mins bttons Used to move the focs in and ot. 12 ZOOM pls and mins bttons Used to zoom in and ot. 16 REMOTE CONTROL Remote Control 1 Power ON / OFF Trns power on and off. 1 OFF ON 2 Pic Mte ON / OFF Shows and hides the projected image. When OFF, the light sorce is completely switched off and the screen is black. 2 OSD ON / OFF Enable and disable screen timeot messages and control whether to show the OSD dring projection OFF OFF MENU Pic Mte OSD ON ON DEFAULT 8 4 MENU Access the OSD. If the OSD is open, press this btton to go back to the previos men. 5 OK 5 Navigation (arrows and OK) Navigate throgh the mens with the arrows, confirm yor choice with OK. In lens adjstment modes, the arrows are sed to move, zoom or focs the lens. See 11 below. In lens adjstment modes, or when the OSD is not showing, the OK btton switches between modes: Shift Adjstment and Zoom / Focs Adjstment. 6 7 EXIT FREEZE INFO RE-SYNC EXIT Go p one level in the OSD. When the top level is reached, press to close the OSD. 7 FREEZE Freeze the crrent frame. 8 DEFAULT When editing a parameter, press this btton to restore the defalt vale. 9 INFO Access information abot the projector. 10 RE-SYNC Re-synchronise with the crrent inpt signal. 20 POSITIONING THE SCREEN AND PROJECTOR Positioning The Screen And Projector 1. Install the screen, ensring that it is in the best position for viewing by yor adience. 2. Mont the projector, ensring that it is at a sitable distance from the screen for the image to fill the screen. Set the adjstable feet so that the projector is level, and perpendiclar to the screen. The drawing below shows the positions of the feet for table monting, and the fixing holes for ceiling monting. 1 For adjstable feet Always allow the projector to cool for 5 mintes before disconnecting the power or moving the projector. 2 Six M4 holes for ceiling mont The screws shold not penetrate more than 15 mm into the body of the projector. 1 1 Ensre that there is at least 50 cm (19.7 in) of space between the ventilation otlets and any wall, and 30 cm (11.8 in) on all other sides. 2 2 Do not stack more than 3 projectors Installation and Qick-Start Gide page 12

21 POSITIONING THE SCREEN AND PROJECTOR Roll and pitch The projector can be operated in nmeros positions. 22 CHANGING THE LENS Changing The Lens Inserting a new lens 1. Remove the front and rear lens caps. Before changing the lens, always make sre the projector is switched off and flly disconnected from its power spply. When changing the lens, avoid sing excessive force as this may damage the eqipment. 2. Position the lens so that the labels are at the top, and gently insert it all the way into the lens mont. 3. Psh the lens in firmly and trn it clockwise ntil it clicks into place. The lens is shipped separately. Take care to preserve the original lens packaging and protective caps for ftre se. The projector will not power on withot the lens fitted. Removing the lens 1. Psh in the lens release lever, and trn the lens anti-clockwise. 2. Remove the lens. 23 OPERATING THE PROJECTOR Operating The Projector Switching the projector on 1. Ensre a lens is fitted. Connect the power cable between the mains spply and the projector. (See Connecting the power spply above.) Switch on at the switch next to the power connector. 2. The POWER indicator lights red to signal that the projector is in STANDBY mode. Press one of the following bttons: On the remote control, the ON btton On the projector control panel, the POWER btton. The fans begin working, then the POWER indicator begins flashing green. When the flashing stops, the POWER and LIGHT indicators both light steady green. The projector is switched on. See also Connecting The Power Spply earlier in this gide. The self-test is rnning when all the LEDs on the control panel are lit. Use only the power cable provided. Switching the projector off 1. Press OFF on the remote control or POWER on the control panel, then press again to confirm yor choice. The POWER indicator on the control panel will start flashing amber, the system will go ot and the cooling fans will rn for a short time ntil the POWER indicator goes stready red to indicate that the projector has entered STANDBY mode. 2. If yo need to switch the projector off completely, switch off at the mains power switch next to the power connector and then disconnect the power cable from the projector. Ensre that the power otlet incldes a grond connection as this eqipment MUST be earthed. Handle the power cable careflly and avoid sharp bends. Do not se a damaged power cable. 24 OPERATING THE PROJECTOR Selecting an inpt signal 1. Connect one or more image sorces to the projector. 2. Select the inpt yo want to display: Press one of the inpt bttons on the remote control. Alternatively, open the On-screen display (OSD) by pressing MENU. Highlight Inpt from the main men, press ENTER/OK and then select an inpt signal sing the UP and DOWN arrow bttons. Press ENTER/OK to confirm yor choice. For fll details of how to se the controls and the men system, see the Operating Gide. Selecting a test pattern To display a test pattern: Press TEST on the remote control. Change the test pattern sing the LEFT and RIGHT arrow bttons.test patterns are displayed in the following order: White, Black, Red, Green, Ble, CheckerBoard, CrossHatch, V Brst, H Brst, ColorBar, Screen Layot, Off Alternatively, open the OSD by pressing MENU. Highlight Test Patterns from the main men, then select a test pattern sing the LEFT and RIGHT arrow bttons. After the final test pattern, the projector exits test pattern mode and retrns to the main image. To view test patterns again, yo need to press TEST again. If yo wish to exit the test patterns before yo reach the final one, press TEST or EXIT at any time. Installation and Qick-Start Gide page 16

25 OPERATING THE PROJECTOR Adjsting the lens The lens can be adjsted sing the Lens men, or sing the lens bttons on the remote control. Lens men The Lens men provides access to the Lens Control setting and the Lens Center command. Lens Control allows Zoom, Focs and Shift adjstment sing the arrow bttons. The setting operates in Zoom/Focs Adjstment and Shift Adjstment mode. Press ENTER/SELECT to switch between the two modes. Remote control Use the remote control to adjst zoom, focs and shift directly, withot opening a men: OK enters lens control, then switches between Zoom/Focs Adjstment and Shift Adjstment. EXIT exits lens control and opens the Lens men. MENU exits lens control and retrns to the main image. The arrow bttons adjst zoom, focs and shift as indicated on the screen. For fll details of how to adjst the lens sing the remote control, see Remote Control earlier in this gide. Adjsting the image Orientation This can be set from the Setp men. Setp men Highlight Orientation and choose from Front Tabletop, Front Ceiling, Rear Tabletop, Rear Ceiling and Ato-front. Keystone This can be set from the Geometry men. 29 SIGNAL INPUTS Signal Inpts Digital inpts and otpts 1 HDBaseT Receives digital signal from HDBaseT-compliant devices. 2 HDMI 1 3 DVI-D HDMI 1.4a inpt. Connect an HDMI cable to the connector. This inpt can receive digital signal from a compatible sorce. Spports sorces p to 1920x1200 resoltion, Hz. Spports HDCP. 4 DisplayPort DisplayPort 1.1a inpt. Connect a DisplayPort cable to the connector. Spports sorces p to 1920x1200 resoltion, Hz. Spports HDCP. For simltaneos HDBaseT and LAN connectivity, a third-party distribtion prodct can be tilised to combine HDBaseT video stream with LAN connection for delivery to the projector. 30 SIGNAL INPUTS Analog inpts and otpts 1 Component RGBHV, RGsB or RGBS Set Color Space in the Color men to Ato or RGB-Video. YPbPr or YCbCr Set Color Space in the Color men to YPbPr or YCbCr. 2 VGA This inpt receives analog signals from a compter. When sing this inpt, it is best to se a flly wired VGA cable to connect the sorce to the projector. This will allow the sorce to determine the projector s capabilities via DDC and show an optimized image. 31 SIGNAL INPUTS EDID on the DVI and VGA inpts If yo are sing a compter DVI card or another sorce that obeys the EDID protocol, the sorce will atomatically configre itself to sit the projector. Otherwise refer to the docmentation spplied with the sorce to manally set the resoltion to the DMD resoltion of the projector or the nearest sitable setting. Switch off the sorce, connect to the projector, then switch the sorce back on again. Using HDMI/DVI switchers with the projector When sing an HDMI/DVI sorce switcher with the projector, it is important to set the switcher so that it passes the projector EDID throgh to the sorce devices. If this is not done, the projector may not be able to lock to the sorce or display the sorce correctly as its video otpt timings may not be compatible with those of the projector. Sometimes this is called transparent, pass-throgh or clone mode. Aspect ratio trigger: can be sed to control screen shttering for different aspect ratios. For example, if sing different screen sizes and aspect ratios, yo can save zoom, focs and positioning for each screen size and aspect ratio in a dedicated preset. Use Clear Memory to delete a memory preset if yo need to save a new combination of lens settings in its place. Overwriting a saved memory preset is not possible. 45 Image men Pictre Mode Choose from High Bright, Presentation and Video. Use a different setting depending the type of inpt sorce. Press ENTER/SELECT to open the list. Use the UP and DOWN arrow bttons to select a pictre mode from the list, then press ENTER/OK to confirm yor choice. Press EXIT to retrn to the main men. Dynamic Black Set to On to allow for increased contrast in darker scenes by modlating the light sorce. Gamma Choose a de-gamma crve from 1.0, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.35, 2.5, S-Crve and DICOM. Used correctly, the Gamma setting can improve contrast while maintaining good details for blacks and whites. If excess ambient light washes ot the image and it is difficlt to see details in dark areas, lower the Gamma setting to compensate. This improves contrast while maintaining good details for blacks. Conversely, if the image is washed ot and nnatral, with excessive detail in black areas, increase the setting. S-Crve is an enhanced mid-tone gamma. DICOM is a simlated DICOM display, which can be sed for training applications. Brightness, Contrast, Satration, He, Sharpness Highlight the setting yo wish to edit, and then press ENTER/OK, or the LEFT or RIGHT arrow btton to open the slider. Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow bttons to adjst the slider. Press EXIT to close the slider and retrn to the men, or MENU to close the slider and retrn to the projected image. Block This filter helps redce block noise, which appears like small blocks in the image and is cased by MPEG compression. Mosqito This filter helps redce mosqito noise, which appears arond the edges of the image and is cased by the image compression algorithm. Horizontal, Vertical These filters soften the image. Reset Temporal Block Mosqito Horizontal Vertical Reset Noise Redction Position and Phase V Position and H Position Set the sliders as reqired. Phase Adjsts the phase of the pixel sampling clock relative to the incoming signal. Adjst the phase if noise is visible. Tracking Adjsts the freqency of the pixel sampling clock. 54 USING THE PROJECTOR Theaterscope setting The TheaterScope setting is sed in combination with an anamorphic lens to restore 2.35:1 images packed into a 16:9 frame. Sch images are projected with black lines at the top and bottom of the 16:9 screen to make p for the difference in aspect ratios. Withot an anamorphic lens and withot the TheaterScope setting applied, a 16:9 sorce containing a 2.35:1 image looks like this: Black margin part of the sorce TheaterScope is sed with an anamorphic lens. If yo se TheaterScope, set yor screen aspect ratio to 16:9. Digital Zoom defines the level of zoom that needs to be applied. If Digital Zoom is set to 0, then the other settings in the men will be disabled. Digital Pan and Digital Scan specify the area that is being enlarged: Digital Pan adjsts the horizontal coordinates. Digital Scan adjsts the vertical coordinates. The featre feathers the light otpt of the projector within the edges that overlap with other projectors in the array: as a reslt, the overlapping edges are evenly lit and easily blend in with the rest of the image. DLP Link On emits a sync plse for the 3D glasses via the projected image. DLP Link Off will send the sync plse to the sync ot connector to se with an external third party emitter. Eye Swap Normal and Reverse (set to Reverse if the left- and right-eye images are displayed in the wrong order) Dark Time 0.65 ms, 1.3 ms and 1.95 ms. Otherwise, consider the notes below to help yo set p the 3D inpt manally. The following 3D formats are spported: HDMI 1 L Dal Pipe (LEFT and RIGHT) The left and right eye images are delivered on two separate HDMI links, which the projector will interleave for 3D display. HDMI 2 R Dal Pipe Frame Packing This format will be detected, re-synchronised, frame-mltiplied and displayed at 96 Hz with the left eye / right eye dominance atomatically extracted from the video data. Yo need to optimize Dark Time and Sync Delay manally to sit yor chosen switching glasses. L R Top and Bottom Sets the projector to reformat the video frames and map them to the display with the left eye / right eye dominance atomatically extracted from the video data. Yo need to optimize Dark Time and Sync Delay manally to sit yor chosen switching glasses. L Frame Packing R Side by Side (Half): interlaced and progressive, 50 and 60Hz The side-by-side image will be de-interlaced (if appropriate), resized and then seqentially displayed at 100 or 120 Hz. The left eye / right eye dominance will be atomatically extracted from the video data, however yo will need to optimize Dark Time and Sync Delay manally to sit yor chosen switching glasses. Dark Time allows yo to minimize this effect. Flly on Flly off Dark time Left Dark time Right Dark time In order to achieve maximm light otpt and a smooth grayscale, whilst eliminating ghosting, the following procedre is recommended: 1. Set Dark Time to a vale appropriate to the glasses or ZScreen, say 1.3 ms or 1.95 ms. Eye Swap The otgoing 3D frames are in pairs - the dominant frame being presented first. Yo can determine which frame shold be the dominant one. Dominance Left LEFT 1 RIGHT 1 LEFT 2 RIGHT 2 LEFT 3 RIGHT 3 2. Adjst Sync Offset time to eliminate ghosting and achieve a smooth grayscale. 3. However, to compensate for processing delays in the projector, Sync Delay introdces a delay to the sync otpt signal sent to the ZScreen or 3D glasses. For example, a 60Hz frame rate is dobled to 120 Hz, or a 48 Hz frame rate may be dobled to 96Hz or tripled to 144 Hz. Infrared Remote Set to Off if yo wish to disable the remote control. IR Code The projector and the remote control need a matching IR code: a two-digit nmber between 00 and 99. The defalt IR code is 00. This is also a master code, which, if assigned to a remote, will work regardless of the vale assigned to the projector. To assign an IR code for the projector: Ato Sorce Infrared Remote IR Code IR Code Reset OSD Settings Memory Setp p Off On 0 If yo trn the remote control off, yo can only trn it back on again from the control panel or via the Projector Controller application. The Projector Controller software is available for download from the Digital Projection website, free of charge. 1. Select IR Code. 2. Use the UP and DOWN arrow bttons to change the vales. To assign an IR code for the remote: A wired remote control will also be disabled if Infrared Remote is set to Off. 1. Press and hold the ADDR btton on the remote ntil the indicator starts flashing. 2. Release the ADDR btton and while the indicator is still flashing, enter a twodigit address sing the nmeric inpt bttons. The indicator will flash three times qickly to confirm the change. IR Code Reset Use this command to nassign an IR code from the projector. This will revert the IR Code vale to 00. To nassign an IR code from the remote control, Press and hold ALT and ADDR simltaneosly ntil the indicator flashes to confirm the change. OSD Settings Access this sbmen to adjst the appearance and position of the on-screen display. This tool is best sed in conjnction with a specialized light meter (a photo spectrometer) to measre color parameters within a particlar installation. 87 THE DMD The DMD A DMD (Digital Micromirror Device ) is a tre digital light modlator which tilises an array of p to 2.3 million moving alminim mirrors, with each one representing a pixel in the final projected image. Throw distance calclations are based on the distance from the oter end of the lens, which will vary from lens to lens. The distance between the front of the projector chassis and the oter end of the lens is called lens extension. Lens extensions is measred when the lens is focsed at infinity, and flly extended. Refer to the projector CAD drawings for individal lens extension figres. The 0.38 : 1 fixed lens has no adjstable shift vale. However, the lens has an inherent offset depending on image size. See the UST docmentation pblished separately on the Digital Projection website. The : 1 zoom lens has an additional featre permitting barrel correction for crved screens. The front ring of the lens is a manal control which provides focs crvatre adjstment to correct for the different focal distances between center and corner. 92 CHOOSING A LENS Fll lens calclation Introdcing TRC The choice of lens will affect the image size and will address discrepancies between the DMD resoltion and the sorce. When an image fills the height of the DMD bt not the width, it ses less than 100% of the DMD srface. A lens chosen sing the basic formla may prodce an image that is considerably smaller than the actal screen. To compensate for loss of screen space in sch sitations, yo need to increase the throw ratio sing a Throw Ratio Correction (TRC). TRC can only be applied if greater than 1. If TRC is 1 or less, disregard it and calclate the throw ratio sing the basic formla. Example Fig. 1 illstrates a 4:3 image within a WUXGA DMD. When a WUXGA projector is sed for a 4:3 image, the image does not fill the width of the DMD, creating a pillarboxing effect - blank spaces to the left and right. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 shows the same image projected on a 4:3 screen sing a standard lens (chosen with the basic calclation). The DMD accrately fills the width of the screen; however, the pillarboxing is now part of the projected image and is transferred to the screen. The DMD does not fill the height of the screen, which has cased letterboxing - frther blank spaces at the top and bottom of the screen. The image is now srronded by blank space, which can be removed if the throw ratio is increased. Fig. 2 Fig. 3 shows the image projected on the same screen with a lens chosen sing TRC. The increased throw ratio has allowed the 4:3 image to fill the 4:3 screen seamlessly. Fig. 3 Reference Gide page 84

Use the conversion chart to check that yo are able to display the fll image on yor screen. 101 SCREEN REQUIREMENTS Positioning the screen and projector For optimm viewing, the screen shold be a flat srface perpendiclar to the floor. The bottom of the screen shold be 1.2 m (4 feet) above the floor and the front row of the adience shold not have to look p more than 30 to see the top of the screen. The distance between the front row of the adience and the screen shold be at least twice the screen height and the distance between the back row and the screen shold be a maximm of 8 times the screen height. The screen viewing area shold be within a 60 range from the face of the screen. The projector shold be installed as close to the power otlet as possible. The power connection shold be easily accessible, so that it can be disconnected in an emergency. Ensre that there is at least 30 cm (12 in) of space between the ventilation otlets and any wall, and 10 cm (4 in) on all other sides. Do not install the projector close to anything that might be affected by its operational heat, for instance, polystyrene ceiling tiles, crtains etc. The image can be flipped for rear projection (see Setp men in the Operating Gide) and displayed withot the need for extra mirrors or eqipment. However, yo mst ensre that there is sfficient distance behind the screen for the projector to be correctly located. Rear installation is generally more complicated and advice shold be soght from yor local dealer before attempting it. Reference Gide page 93

104 FRAME RATES AND PULLDOWNS EXPLAINED Frame Rates And Plldowns Explained Interlaced and progressive scan A progressive scan is a method of pdating the image by drawing all the lines of each frame in a seqence. In contrast, interlaced video alternately scans odd and even lines. In old analog TV interlacing was commonly sed as a way of dobling the refresh rate withot consming extra bandwidth. The following artifacts are common with interlaced video: edge tear (combing) The image lands between two fields and blrs. This is commonly observed when viewing rapid lateral movement. aliasing (stair-stepping) The textre of the image becomes poplated with nrealistic patterns. Aliasing occrs becase of differences between the original frame rate and the destination format. twitter The image shimmers, for example when showing rolling credits. This happens when the image contains thin horizontal lines that only appear in one field. Frame rates of image sorces Original analog films are made at 24 fps and the whole frame is projected at once. To eliminate flicker and create an impression of continos movement, the projector blades divide the images so that the viewer sees 48 frames per second. Interlaced video scans odd lines, then even. Two fields are blended into one image. NTSC video (60i) is fps, or fields per second. 24p video is progressive bt withot the benefit of projector blades dividing the images, so it looks jmpier on playback than film. 24p is the optimal format for projects that are finished on film. 30p is optimal for projects finished on video. It has fewer strobing isses than 24p in video playback. Reference Gide page 96

105 FRAME RATES AND PULLDOWNS EXPLAINED Plldowns - conversion into destination formats Plldowns are a method of converting a 24p sorce into a different destination format by adding extra frames to the sorce. 2:3 (normal) plldown This method is sed to convert a 24p sorce (film) into a 60i destination (NTSC video) by adding two extra fields for every for frames, effectively increasing the frame rate to 30 fps. The frame is split into fields and then two fields are repeated for every for original frames as shown in the illstration below.
