The MVRMG is a monaural (single-channel sound source) system, while the MVR6MG is a stereo (right and left-channel sound source) system. Otherwise, the two models are exactly the same. In this manual, the MVR6MG is illustrated. (The MVRMG has single AUDIO IN/OUT jacks. Otherwise, the MVRMG looks exactly like the MVR6MG.) The use of other tapes may result in poor picture quality and excessive deposits on the video heads, which may not be covered by the warranty if damage occurs. The 9 micron head provides a better picture when you view tapes recorded in slow speed (SLP). 5 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page Putting Batteries in the Remote Control Remove the battery compartment lid on the bottom of the remote control by sliding it in the direction of the arrow. Before Using Your VCR Place Replace two AA batteries inside the battery compartment with their + and ends aligned as indicated. the battery compartment lid. Battery Safety Battery Usage CAUTION - To prevent battery leakage that may result in bodily injury or damage to the unit: Install ALL batteries correctly, with the + and - markings on the battery aligned as indicated on the unit; Do not mix batteries, for example, old with new or carbon with alkaline; and Remove batteries when the unit will not be used for a long time. Recording Prevention Video cassette tapes have record tabs to ensure you do not accidentally erase recordings. To To prevent recording, break off the tab with a screwdriver. allow recording, cover the hole with cellophane tape. VCR maintenance Use only tapes with the mark. Remove any light adhesive stick-on notes from the video cassette tape before putting the tape in the VCR. Removable labels can jam the VCR. The VCR requires periodic maintenance to maintain its excellent performance. This VCR has an Automatic Head Cleaner. However, you may have to replace the video heads eventually. Only an authorized service center should perform this service.

6 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page 6 7Ω ANT / CABLE 6 Hookups Without a Cable Box/Direct Broadcast System The basic VCR/TV connection antenna/cable to VCR to TV is shown below. If you have a Cable Box or a Direct Broadcast System, please see pages eight-nine. If you have a Stereo TV, please see page. After you hook up the VCR, go to page to turn on the VCR. (The MVR6MG is illustrated here. The MVRMG has single AUDIO IN/OUT jacks.) Disconnect the antenna or cable from your TV. Antenna Indoor/Outdoor ( ohm) 7 ANT / CABLE OR Cable (7 ohm) ANTENNA IN Jack (on back of TV) Connect the antenna or cable to the ANT(enna) IN Jack of your VCR. (You may use either a snap-on type (supplied) or screw-on type of coaxial cable, whichever you prefer.) The ANTENNA IN jack on your TV may be labelled 7 ohm or RF In instead. Check your TV owner s manual for details. 7 ANT / RF coaxial cable ANTENNA IN Jack (on back of TV) example only Plug Set in the power cords of the TV and the VCR. the / switch on the back of the VCR to or, whichever channel is not used or least used in your area. Set the TV to the same channel. For example, when playing a tape, if the / switch is set to, the TV should be on channel. or / Switch 6 You are ready to turn on the VCR. Please go to page before turning on the VCR.

8 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page 8 CABLE 8 Hookups With a Cable Box/Direct Broadcast System There are two ways to connect your Cable Box/DBS to the VCR. With this connection: You may view any channel. You must select channels at the Cable Box/DBS. Channels cannot be changed at the VCR. You may not view a channel other than the one you are recording. You may not program channels at the VCR. You can only program a timer recording for one channel at a time. Set the TV and the VCR to the Cable Box/DBS output channel (channel or ); set the / switch on the back of the VCR to the same channel. Set your Cable Box/DBS to the channel you want to record. When you enter the channel you want to record in a timer recording, select channel or (the Cable Box/DBS output channel). (This is step on page 9.) Leave the Cable Box/DBS on for a timer recording. VCR Cable Box/DBS 7 ANT / Cable Signal RF coaxial cable RF coaxial cable TV s ANTENNA IN Jack Connections Connect Use Use a Cable signal to the IN Jack on the Cable Box/DBS. the supplied black RF coaxial cable to connect the OUT Jack on the Cable Box/DBS to the ANT(enna) IN Jack on the VCR. a second RF coaxial cable (not supplied) to connect the OUT Jack on the VCR to the TV s ANTENNA IN Jack. Recording/Viewing Any Channel With Set Select the VCR on and in VCR position (the VCR/TV light will appear on the display panel), use the (annel) o/p button to set the VCR to the Cable Box/DBS output channel (channel or ). Set the / switch on the back of the VCR to the same channel. the TV to the same channel to which you set the VCR. the channel you want to view/record at the Cable Box/DBS.

VCR Cable Box/DBS 7 ANT / CABLE Cable Signal RF coaxial cable RF coaxial cable TV s ANTENNA IN Jack Connections Connect a Cable signal to the VCR s ANT(enna) IN Jack. Use Use the supplied black RF coaxial cable to connect the OUT Jack on the VCR to the IN Jack on the Cable Box/DBS. a second RF coaxial cable (not supplied) to connect the OUT Jack on the Cable Box/DBS to the ANTENNA IN Jack on the TV. Recording One Channel/Watching Another Put Select the Cable Box/DBS on the same channel as the VCR s / switch. Set the TV to the Cable Box/DBS output channel ( or ). Then, with the VCR in VCR position (the VCR/TV light will appear on the display panel), use the (annel) o/p button to select the channel you want to record at the VCR. Start the recording. the VCR/TV button once to put the VCR in TV position. (The VCR/TV light will disappear.) the channel you want to watch at the Cable Box/DBS. Helpful Hint When you play a tape, make sure the Cable Box/DBS is set to the same channel as the / switch on the VCR. Set the TV to the Cable Box/DBS output channel ( or ).

Video Cable Audio and Video IN Jacks on TV Stereo Audio Cable MVRMG ANT(enna) antenna or cable to IN Jack VIDEO (yellow) and AUDIO (white) OUT Jacks Video Cable Y splitter Audio Cable Audio and Video IN Jacks on TV Connect the antenna or cable to the ANT(enna) IN Jack on the back of the VCR. Connect a video cable to the yellow VIDEO OUT Jack on the back of the VCR, then connect the other end of the video cable to the VIDEO IN Jack on your TV. MVR6MG Connect a stereo audio cable to the red and white AUDIO OUT Jacks on the back of the VCR, matching cable colors to the jack colors.then, connect the other end of the audio cable to the AUDIO IN Jacks on your TV, again matching cable colors to the jack colors. If your TV s AUDIO IN jacks or your stereo audio cable ends are not color coded, connect the red (right) AUDIO OUT jack of the VCR to the right AUDIO IN jack on the TV. Connect the white (left) AUDIO OUT jack of the VCR to the left AUDIO IN jack on the TV. The AUDIO IN jacks on your TV should be marked left and right. If they are not, consult your TV owner s manual. MVRMG Connect an audio cable to the white AUDIO OUT jack on the back of the VCR. Then, connect the other end of the audio cable to the AUDIO IN jack on your TV. If your TV has Right and Left AUDIO IN jacks, you must use a Y splitter audio cable as illustrated to deliver audio to the TV s right and left channels. Turn on your TV, making sure it is in Line Input mode. This might be referred to as the TV s A/V IN or Audio/Video In channel, External or EXT channel, or AUX or Auxiliary In channel. Please refer to your TV owner s manual for details.

11 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page Turning on Your VCR Before turning on your VCR, make sure batteries are in the remote control and you have connected the VCR and TV correctly. Details are on pages -. You can not program channels if you are using a Cable Box or a Direct Broadcast System. Turn the POWER button. The VCR/TV light and the POWER light will appear on the VCR display panel. on the TV. Set it to the same channel as the / switch on the back of the VCR. The display shown below will appear on the TV screen. (If the display does not appear, check your hookups, then follow the steps on page to set up channels and page 7 to select a language.) SELECT op ENGLISH ESPAÑOL ON Turn on the TV. POWER VCR/TV EJECT REW SPEED TIME SEAR STILL/PAUSE REC/OTR MEMORY SLOW MAKE SELECTION OR PUSH TO CONTINUE Within Within 6 seconds, press the /o button or the /p button to select English or Spanish onscreen displays and menus. the button. The display shown below will appear. CONNECT ANTENNA OR CABLE TO VCR THEN... PUSH UP KEY OR... FOR ONLY PUSH 6 seconds, press the (annel) o button to begin automatic channel programming. AUTO PROGRAMMING IN PROCESS PLEASE WAIT will appear on the TV screen. The VCR will memorize all available channels. When all channels are memorized, ANNELS ARE SET will appear on the TV screen briefly, then TV programming will appear. Now, when you press the (annel) o/p button, you ll only scan through channels that you receive. You can still select other channel numbers using the Number buttons. Helpful Hints To skip this feature and play a tape immediately, insert a tape with its record tab removed. Or, to skip step, press the button. All onscreen displays will be in English. To skip step, press the /p button. Channels will not be programmed, and ANNELS NOT SET will appear on the screen. If you try to program channels when there is no antenna or cable connected to the VCR, programming will appear to take place, but eventually a NO TV SIGNALS message will appear. Connect an antenna or cable to the VCR s ANT(enna) IN Jack and press the (annel) o button again. You may need to follow the steps on page. You may need to repeat the steps on this page if a power failure occurs. If you used the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT jacks to connect the VCR to the TV, see page. You need to choose a channel other than or at the TV to see the VCR image on your TV.

12 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page Automatic Channel Setup Although your VCR may automatically memorize the channels you receive when you turn it on for the first time, this function lets you set up the channels again. the button. - SELECT op OOSE B POWER VCR/TV EJECT PROGRAM VCR SET UP TUNER SET UP SET CLOCK the /o button or the /p button to select TUNER SET UP, then press the /B button. REW 6 SELECT op OOSE B AUTO PROGRAMMING ADD/DELETE MEMORY REVIEW TV STEREO ON ND AUDIO MVR6MG only SPEED TIME SEAR STILL/PAUSE REC/OTR MEMORY SLOW the /o button or the /p button to select AUTO PROGRAMMING, then press the /B button. The VCR distinguishes between TV channels and cable channels, and the VCR will memorize all the channels you receive. Wait AUTO PROGRAMMING IN PROCESS PLEASE WAIT START FINISH for a few minutes while the VCR sets up the channels. When this is complete, ANNELS ARE SET will appear on the screen. Then the programming of the lowest channel number placed in the VCR s memory will appear on the screen. Now when you press the (annel) o/p button, you will scan only through channels you receive. You may still select non-memorized channels by pressing the Number buttons. Helpful Hints You can not enter the TUNER SET UP menu when you are in Line Input mode (channel or ). When you select channel or, AV REAR or AV FRONT will appear on the TV screen briefly. Choose channel or when you are playing other sources through the VCR (for example, if you connected a camcorder to the VCR so you can record a home movie or watch it on your TV). You can not program channels if you are using a Cable Box or DBS. If you have an antenna, channels - 69 will be available. If you have a cable connection, channels - will be available. You may need to repeat the steps on this page if a power failure occurs.

13 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page Adding/Deleting Channels If your channel lineup changes, you may want to add newly available channels or remove channels that are no longer available in your area. You can use the (annel) o/p button to scroll through only the available channels. To add or delete channels from the VCR s memory, follow these steps. the button. the /o button or the /p button to select TUNER SET UP, then press the /B button. the /o button or the /p button to select ADD/DELETE, then press the /B button. A list of programmed channels will appear on the screen. If all the programmed channels don t fit on the screen, press the /B button to see the remaining channels. Then press the REW(ind)/s button to return to the first screen of channels. If there are no more channels, pressing the /B button will take you back to the previous menu. If you do not press any buttons within seconds, you will either go to the next screen of channels or you will return to the previous menu. REC/OTR MEMORY SLOW the button once or twice to exit.

15 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page Setting the Clock Follow the steps below to set your VCR s clock. Make sure: The VCR is on and the VCR/TV light appears on the display panel. (If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.) You make each entry within 6 seconds of the previous entry. the button. the /o button or the /p button to select SET CLOCK, then press the /B button. For example, for : PM, press,,. TIME : PM MONTH / / TO CORRECT PUSH 6 two Number buttons for the month, two Number buttons for the day, and two Number buttons for the year. For example, for July,, press 7,,. The day of the week will appear automatically. TIME : PM DATE 7 / / MON. TO CORRECT PUSH the button. Helpful Hints Enter a before a single-digit number. Entries that do not match the VCR s clock or calendar will cause a question mark to appear on the screen. To make corrections, press the button until the space for the number you want to correct is flashing. Then enter the correct number. To see the current time on the TV screen, press the button. Details are on page. The VCR may lose the clock setting if the power fails.

Daylight-Savings Time is ON when you receive your VCR. Turn Daylight-Savings Time ON or OFF by following the steps below. Before you begin: Make sure you have set the clock. POWER Button to turn on or off the VCR. /o Button to play a tape; press to release Slow, Search, or Still mode and return to normal playback. Number Buttons to select channels at the VCR or use to set up VCR features (such as the clock). Cable Users Enter channel numbers as a two-digit number for the quickest results. For example, to select channel 6, press,6. If you only press the Number 6 button, channel 6 will appear after a brief delay. (There also may be a brief delay when you select channels,, and.) To select channels and above, enter channel numbers as a three-digit number. For example, to select channel 7, press,, 7. Antenna Users Only channels -69 will be available. Helpful Hints If you press the REC(ord)/OTR button when a tape is not in the VCR, NO CASSETTE will flash on the screen. If you press the REC(ord)/OTR button while a tape without a record tab is in the VCR, the VCR will eject the tape and PROTECTED CASSETTE CAN- NOT RECORD will flash on the screen. For recording options, see pages 6-. You can change the tape speed during a recording, but some distortion will appear on the tape. The VCR records in a preset volume. The VCR/TV light will appear on the VCR display panel again. the /p button to stop the recording. SPEED TIME SEAR STILL/PAUSE REC/OTR MEMORY SLOW Select the channel you want to watch at the TV. Select channel or at the TV. Helpful Hints If you use a Cable Box or Direct Broadcast System, you may not be able to watch one channel while recording another. See pages 8-9 for details. If you used the AUDIO and VIDEO OUT jacks to connect the VCR to the TV, see page. You may need to choose a channel other than or at step above.

27 mvr6mg.qx // : PM Page 7 One-Touch Recording 7 The One-Touch Recording (OTR) feature allows you to set an immediate timed recording minutes to eight hours long. Before you begin: Set up the channels at the VCR. Details are on page. Select a recording speed (SP, SLP) with the SPEED button. Put a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape s record tab is intact and the tape is long enough to record the program(s). If the end of a tape is reached during an OTR, the VCR will eject the tape and turn itself off. Place the VCR in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear on the VCR display panel. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.) the (annel) o/p button or the Number buttons to select the channel you want to record. the REC(ord)/OTR button repeatedly until the desired recording length ( minutes to eight hours) appears on the TV screen. Recording will begin immediately. The RECORD light and the TIMER light will appear on the VCR display panel. POWER VCR/TV EJECT REW SPEED TIME SEAR STILL/PAUSE REC/OTR MEMORY SLOW OTR (:) To stop an OTR before recording is finished, press the /p button. To cancel the OTR but continue recording, press the REC(ord)/OTR button repeatedly until REC appears in the upper left corner of the TV screen. (STATUS must be set to ON. See page for details.) The RECORD light will remain on the VCR display panel, but the TIMER light will disappear. Helpful Hints To check the time remaining for an OTR after the OTR has been set, press the button. To change the recording length while an OTR is in progress, press the REC(ord)/OTR button until the desired length appears on the screen. If you begin an OTR when another recording is paused, the OTR will begin. You can not pause an OTR. If the preset time for a timer recording comes up during an OTR, the OTR has priority. A message will remind you when the timer recording was scheduled to begin. You may let the OTR continue; the timer recording will not take place. Or, stop the OTR and turn off the VCR immediately. The timer recording will take place if you turn off the VCR before the timer recording s scheduled start time. When the OTR finishes, the VCR shuts itself off.

The VCR will turn itself on, record, and turn itself off automatically. Before you begin: Set up the channels at the VCR. Details are on page. Set the clock. Details are on page. Put a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape s record tab is intact and the tape is long enough to record the program(s). Make sure the VCR is in VCR position. The VCR/TV light will appear on the display panel. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once. - POWER VCR/TV EJECT Do each step within 6 seconds of the previous step. the button. DAILY: The VCR will record the same channel every day from Monday to Friday starting at the same time and recording for the same length of time. WEEKLY: The VCR will record the same channel on the same day, at the same time, and for the same length of time every week. Daily Recording (example) DAILY PROGRAM (MON-FRI) PROGRAM SELECT PROGRAM NUMBER Helpful Hint If you need to make a correction while programming a timer recording, press the button until the cursor is flashing on the item you want to change. Then enter the correct information.

Numbers for open slots will flash on the screen. NOTE: If you enter a number for a slot that has already been used to store a timer recording, PREVIOUSLY SET PROGRAM will appear on the screen briefly. Information about the program in that slot will appear on the screen. If this happens, press the button, then select another number. the Number buttons to enter the channel you want to record. Cable Users, enter channel numbers as a two-digit number for the quickest results. For example, to select channel 6, press,6. If you only press the Number 6 button, channel 6 will be selected after a brief delay. There also may be a brief delay when you select channels,, and. If you want to select channels and above, enter channel numbers as a three-digit number. For example, to select channel 7, press,, 7. Antenna Users, enter channel numbers as a two-digit number for the quickest results. For example, to select channel, press,. If you only press the Number button, channel will be selected after a brief delay. You may only select channels -69. If you are recording from line input, press, to select AV REAR. If you are using a Cable Box/DBS, enter the Cable Box/DBS output channel ( or ). Set the Cable Box/DBS to the channel you want to record. Leave the Cable Box/DBS on for the timer recording. The TIMER light will appear on the display panel. The TIMER light will flash if there is no tape in the VCR. If the timer recording will take place several hours or days from now, you may use the VCR until time for the recording. Turn off the VCR a few minutes before the recording starts. If you forget to turn off the VCR, PLEASE TURN OFF VCR FOR TIMER RECORDING flashes on your TV screen two minutes before a timer recording is set to begin. the button to remove the message, then turn off the VCR. Tape Speeds This chart shows the recording/playback time for three types of video cassettes (T6, T, and T6). There are three playback speeds: SP, LP, and SLP. When recording, you can change the tape speed (SP or SLP) using the SPEED button. You cannot record in LP speed. You can play a tape only in the speed in which you recorded it. The timer recording information for the program in the lowest numbered slot will appear on the screen. If no timer recordings are set, nothing will happen when you press the /B button. Timer Recording (cont d) 7 POWER REW - 8 VCR/TV 6 9 EJECT the /B button repeatedly to review all programmed timer recordings. If you don t press the /B button within seconds, the VCR will automatically display information about the next programmed timer recording. This will continue until all timer recordings have been displayed. Then the menu will disappear. SPEED TIME SEAR STILL/PAUSE REC/OTR MEMORY SLOW To 6 Repeat cancel the timer recording displayed, press the button. Either the display will disappear or information about other timer recordings will appear. If you do not press any other buttons, the display will disappear after all timer recordings have been displayed. steps - to make sure you have cleared the correct timer recording. Helpful Hints CLASH may flash on the screen when you finish setting a timer recording. This means that the timer recording you just programmed and another timer recording overlap. The current timer recording will not take place. You may choose to cancel the overlapping timer recording. To stop a started timer recording, press the Stop/Eject C/A button on the VCR. The VCR may lose timer recordings if the power fails. Reset the channels and the clock before resetting the timer recordings. Details are on pages and. If the preset time for a timer recording comes up during an OTR, the OTR has priority. A message will remind you when the timer recording was scheduled to begin. You may let the OTR continue; the timer recording will not take place. Or, stop the OTR and turn off the VCR immediately.
