The goal of this manual is to guide you through setting up and operating your Toshiba as quickly as possible. Instructions in this manual are based on using the remote control. You can also use the controls on the if they have the same name as those on the remote control. 5 If you have not connected electronic equipment before, or you have been frustrated in the past, you may wish to read this section. (Cables are not supplied.) A coaxial cable is the standard cable that comes in from an antenna or cable converter box. Coaxial cables use F connectors. Audio and video cables are usually color-coded according to use: yellow for video, and red and white for audio. The red audio cable is for the stereo right channel, and the white audio cable is for the stereo (or mono) left channel. On the rear panel of the, the terminals are color-coded in the same manner as the cables. S-video cables provide better picture performance than regular video cables. S-video cables can only be used with S-video compatible components. ColorStream (component video) cables come in sets of three, and provide the best picture performance. ColorStream cables can only be used with ColorStream compatible components. a VC This connection allows you to watch local channels and video programs, play or record on the VC while watching, and record from one channel while watching another channel. You can record from one source while watching a program from another source. 10 Introduction a camcorder This connection allows you to watch video materials recorded on a camcorder. You will need: one pair of audio cables one video cable Camcorder Note: If you have an S-VHS camcorder, use an S-video cable instead of a regular video cable for better picture quality. Do not connect a regular video cable and an S-video cable to Video- at the same time. L an audio system This connection allows you to use an audio amplifier to adjust the audio level, and to use external speakers. To control the audio, turn on the and the stereo amplifier, and then turn off the built-in speakers. (See Turning off the built-in speakers on page.) 11 remote control Preparing the remote control for use You can use the remote control to operate the, most VC models, and most cable converters together, even if they are different brands. If you have a Toshiba VC or cable converter, the remote control is already programmed and ready to use. If you have a non-toshiba VC or converter, you must first program the remote control (see Programming the remote control for use with a non-toshiba VC or a cable converter on page.) Installing the remote control batteries To install the batteries:. Slide the battery cover off of the back of the remote control.. Install two AA size batteries. Match the + and signs on the batteries to the signs on the battery compartment. Note: The remote control may not operate your VC or cable converter. efer to the owner s manual for your other device to see which features are available. In addition, the remote control for your other device may have features not available on the s remote control. If you would like to continue to use these features, you may want to use the original remote control. Caution: Dispose of batteries in a designated disposal area. Do not throw batteries into a fire. Do not mix battery types or combine used batteries with new ones. emove dead batteries immediately to prevent battery acid from leaking into the battery compartment. 12 Introduction Programming the remote control for use with a non-toshiba VC or cable converter The remote control is preprogrammed to operate Toshiba VCs and cable converters (see page ). To use the remote control to operate a non-toshiba VC or cable converter:. efer to the VC and cable converter code tables on pages and to find the corresponding code for your VC or cable converter. If more than one code is listed, try each one separately until you find the one that works.. If you are programming the remote control to operate your: VC, set the //VC switch on the remote control to VC. Cable converter, set the //VC switch on the remote control to.. While holding down CALL, press the Number buttons ( ) to enter the three-digit code for your brand of VC or converter.. Point the remote control at the VC or converter and press POW to test the code. If the VC or converter responds, you have entered the right code. 18 Introduction Adding channels to the s memory When you press Channel y or z, the will stop only on the channels that are stored in the s channel memory. Follow the steps below and on the next page to program channels into the s memory. Programming channels automatically The can automatically detect all active channels and store them in its memory. After the has stored the channels in its memory, you can manually erase channels or add your favorite channels (see page ). To program channels automatically:. 19 Adding and erasing channels manually After you have programmed the channels automatically, you can manually add or erase specific channels. To add or erase channels:. Select the channel you want to add or erase. If you are adding a channel, select the channel using the Channel Number buttons.. Press MNU, and then press x or until the ST UP menu.
