One of the best items in the collection. Operation Tabarin was begun in January 1944 to assert British claims over the sub-antarctic islands and to thwart any territorial claims by other nations. Bases were established at Deception Island, Port Lockroy (Graham Land) & Hope Bay. ["Hardy" lead a raid by five destroyers that dramatically sank six merchantmen, a destroyer & an ammunition ship in the first Battle of Narvik (Norway). "Hunter" was sunk & "Hardy" disabled. Her commander, Capt Warburton-Lee, was killed and posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross] 455 C B/C Ex Lot 455 NAMED SHIPS: 2-line 'PASSED BY CENSOR/HMS HOOD' on two Oct 1939 covers (one with the ship's crest on the flap, toning) & circular type in rosine on two Nov 1939 covers (one registered to Stanley Gibbons with 'LONDON I.S./12NO/H.M. SHIPS' cds (no year slug); plus unused PPC & photo both of the ship. [Built in 1916, "Hood" was the last battlecruiser, and the only one of its class, built for the Royal Navy.
