Rated 10. A major rarity: Miller states "at least two copies are known". [In June 1944, handstamps of this distinctive type were issued to the 15 British censor stations in the West Indies. [NB: Miller states that the reason for the "condemning" is inscribed on the labels; not in this instance. Rated 10: the later of the two recorded examples. [NB: Arrived at Bermuda on east-bound Pan Am "Clipper" #33, the label being endorsed "33E". Rating omitted. [Mail containing currency or stamps was impounded, and the contents seized. In the absence of any subsequent postal markings the date of release is unknown, and may have been as late as 1951.] 350 C A- Lot 350 LABELS: black/blue 'Opened by Censor' as M#CL1 but with No Stop after 'Censor' on face of collector's cover to GB, 1½d tied by fair 'WEST END/JU25/1941/CAYMAN ISLANDS' cds. 10 Prestige Philately - Auction No 162 Page: 10 FALKLAND ISLANDS 386 C B Lot 386 LABELS: 'Opened by Censor.' text 84mm long (Heijtz #a) on 1941 philatelic cover from the USA to South Georgia, various Argentine b/s & light 'SOUTH GEORGIA' arrival of 8OC/41, endorsed on the face "Exterior" in red (in Buenos Aires?) & with large 'RETURN.' h/s (not listed by Heijtz) 387 C A- Lot 387 LABELS: 'Opened by Censor.' text 75mm long (Heijtz #b) on cover to the USA with 3d Sheep tied by Port Stanley cds of 15MR/45, sender's endorsement "EEustrom [?]/Falkland Is/SA" on the flap. 400T 388 C B Lot 388 CACHETS: straight-line 'Passed Censor' (Heijtz #a2) on philatelic cover to the USA with Coronation set tied by 'SOUTH GEORGIA/OC27/41' cds, a bit grubby. 150T 389 C B Lot 389 NAVAL: tombstone 'FROM HM SHIP/PASSED BY CENSOR' initialled and dated 11/11/44 on War Economy envelope with Graham Land Overprints ½d pair & 1d tied by very fine 'FALKLAND ISLANDS/Graham Land/ 11NOV1944/DEPENDENCIES' cds in purple, Port Stanley transit b/s of 15DE/44, minor repaired tear at upper-left & a little reduced at right. One of the best items in the collection. Operation Tabarin was begun in January 1944 to assert British claims over the sub-antarctic islands and to thwart any territorial claims by other nations. Bases were established at Deception Island, Port Lockroy (Graham Land) & Hope Bay. On 11th Nov 1944, HMS "William Scoresby" departed from Port Lockroy with outgoing mail. 2,000T

(3) 413 C A Lot 413 CACHETS - UNNUMBERED: straight-line 'PASSED BY CENSOR' (88x12mm) in violet on philatelic cover to USA, GPO cds of 2OC39, plain brown resealing tape. Stated to be one of only two recorded in the pre-japanese Occupation period. [NB: Vernon states the h/s is 88x10mm] 414 C B Lot 414 CACHETS - UNNUMBERED: boxed 'GILBERT & ELLICE/ISLANDS COLONY/PASSED BY CENSOR' (Vernon Type C1) on c.1940 cover to Canada with Coronation 3d poor cancel (identified on the reverse as from Tabiteuea). 100T 415 C B Lot 415 CACHETS - UNNUMBERED: ditto, with first two lines of inscription removed & initialled "EJC", 1½d with very worn undated 'POST OFFICE/VAITUPU' h/s, endorsed on back "Rec'd 2/12/42", minor blemishes. With the enclosed letter dated 15/10/1941 from the Vaitupu postmaster. [Lieut EJ Coode was the censor on Funafuti]

[Brundell was a New Zealand Coast Watcher stationed on Vaitupu & the cover was probably carried by an NZ vessel] 400T 417 C A Lot 417 CACHETS - NUMBERED: boxed '.../PASSED BY CENSOR/ No. 1 ' (Vernon Type C2) on locally addressed philatelic cover with 'FANNING ISLAND' cds of 9AUG44 and British type 'EXAMINER 7179' tape (used on Fanning???). Both stated to be unique. Rated 6+. Most unusual. Beautiful exhibit!
