4 Selection criteria Choosing the right projection screen A projection screen is an indispensable component of a presentation or Home Cinema set-up. Because as good as the projector itself may be, the image must be projected in such a way that several people are able to see and read it at the same time. Choosing the right projection screen is therefore extremely important. The objective of a projection screen is actually twofold: the display of visual information without a loss of image quality, and the distribution of the projected light in the direction of the audience. Both aspects are necessary for an optimum perception of the projected image. Each situation is unique and the choice of the right projection screen is influenced by factors such as ambient light, light output, projector set-up and the presentation room. Set-up of presentation room and projector The set-up of the presentation room (viewing angle) and the position of the projector (on the ceiling or on a table) are the first environmental factors upon which the choice of screen fabric will have to be based. A projection screen reflects the projected image according to a particular principle. The property of the projection screen which allows it to reflect light in a certain direction not only has consequences for the viewing angle, but the clarity of the image is influenced as well. A projection screen that distributes light evenly has a larger viewing angle and a lower gain, such as a Matte White projection screen fabric for example. Projection screens which bundle the light more offer a higher gain over a smaller viewing angle, such as the High Power projection screen fabric for example. Ambient light and light output of the projector The clarity the image should possess in order for it to be perceived well (quantity of light which comes from the projection screen) depends on the quantity of ambient light present, the gain of the screen fabric and the light output of the projector. For an optimum, legible projection quality, the light output of the projector, the of the projection screen and the gain of the screen fabric should be attuned to one another.the following rule of thumb applies in calculating this: ANSI-Lumen projector LUX= Surface area of screen in m 2 X gain LUX = too little ambient light LUX =400 normal ambient light The amount of light that is reflected by the projection screen is expressed in LUX. For an optimal image quality, the ratio between the LUX value of the projected image and the wall behind it should be a minimum of 5:1. A rule of thumb which may be used is that with normal ambient light, when the light output of the background is approximately 80 LUX, the value of the amount of light (LUX) that is emitted by the projection screen should be roughly 400 LUX. If the amount of ambient light is too low, the LUX value of the background is approximately 20 which means that the LUX value of the screen should be around. The 4 steps shown on the following pages will provide you with the most important selection criteria which will help you to choose the right projection screen, while also taking your specific circumstances and needs into account. 5 Selection criteria Four steps to choosing the right projection screen Step 1. type There are four types of projection screens: electrically operated projection screen manually operated projection screen portable projection screen permanent tensioned screen A portable projection screen is the best choice if a variety of locations are to be used for projection. If the projection room is permanent, then you may choose from an electrical, manual operated or tensioned screen, depending on your personal preference and budget. Step 2. Aspect ratio Depending on the projection method to be used, the projected image will have a certain width/height relationship. For the best results, it is advisable to select a projection screen with the same ratio as that of the projected image. In general terms, a distinction may be made between the following aspect ratios: square format video format HDTV format Step 3. dimensions The dimensions and hanging position of the projection screen are determined by the following guidelines: Dimensions of the projection screen height of the projection screen = 1/6 of the distance from the projection screen to the last row of chairs (A). width of the projection screen = width = height width = 1,33 x height width = 1,78 x height Optimum viewing height For the following types of use, the most optimum distance from the bottom of the projection screen to the floor is: Professional use = minimum 125 cm Home Cinema use = minimum cm Minimum viewing distance The optimum perception of the projected image is determined by: Minimum viewing distance (B) = 1.5 x height of the projection screen (Y) General explanation: All of the available s may be found in the product range tables. 6 Selection criteria Step 4. Choosing the right screen fabric A choice may be made from the screen fabrics shown below. The selection will be determined primarily by the light output of the projector, the ambient light, the position of the projector (on the ceiling or placed at seat height) and the layout of the presentation room. May also be used in situations in which the projector is placed at seat height as well as those in which the projector is mounted on the ceiling. Among the diffusion screen fabrics, the choice may also be made from Matte White and High Contrast. Matte White produces clear, true-to-life colours. The light-grey surface of the High Contrast projection screen fabric ensures deeper black levels, fuller colours and excellent shadow detail display. For the best results with High Contrast, we recommend darkening the room. Matte White M screen fabric complies with the highest standard for fire safety (B1). Mounting materials Ceiling brackets For installation of a projection screen in a high room or under a recessed ceiling, special ceiling brackets are available. 73 Control materials Infrared remote control (IR) The infrared-driven remote control comprises a wall box with an infrared receiver and transmitter. The wall box must be connected to the projection screen. The infrared receiver must be mounted in a visible location. Using the transmitter, the projection screen may be operated from a distance of up to 7 metres Radio frequency remote control (RF) The radio frequency remote control is a three-part set comprising a control module, a transmitter as well as a cordless wall switch. The control module must be connected to the projection screen. The cordless wall switch may be mounted onto the wall without the need for any cabling. The projection screen may be operated using both the wall switch as well as the transmitter from a distance of up to 30 metres Key switch The use of a key switch can be the ideal solution for preventing the unauthorised use of your electrical projection screen Pull rod If the projection screen with spring mechanism is mounted at heights greater than 2.5 metres, a pull rod can be a handy aid in the rolling of a projection screen.
