SES ASTRA DLR / ESA ARTES XI Workshop June 2006, Rottach-Egern 2006/06/29 SES ASTRA PROPRIETARY
Overview Context Mission profile Technical Concept Example coverage maps 2006/06/29 SES ASTRA PROPRIETARY Slide 2
Business context Increasing capacity needs, requiring high flexibility 2-way services Government services (incl. military and disaster recovery) Intercontinental connectivity and trunking/cellco backhauling (regional) DTH (HDTV, mobile TV, IPTV) Decreasing Tpx sales price on most markets and segments Cost per GEO tpx in-orbit [EOL] as per bus size Small Medium Large 6.3 to 5.8 M /tpx 5.5 M /tpx 3.5 M /tpx Including launch, insurance including 1 st year in orbit, ground segment and contingency Translates into cost per Mbit/s delivered with a given QoS 2006/06/29 SES ASTRA PROPRIETARY Slide 3
Mission profile Substantial business risks on first mission Financial risks, higher insurance costs Schedule risk, no heritage yet Internal: SES procurement guidelines & back-log build-up Uncertain market demand High flexibility is required to mitigate risks Fully-steerable beams for coverage and GEO slot flexibility Flexible intra and inter-beam interconnectivity ISL for flexible connectivity and organic growth First mission s risk profile : not for premium DTH services, but for exploration of new emerging markets 2006/06/29 SES ASTRA PROPRIETARY Slide 4
Direct injection efficiency Arianespace guidelines: for a small satellite with direct GSO injection, the launch mass should not exceed 1295 kg for a Kourou Soyuz. Accounting for mass uncertainties, the target launch mass with all fuels should then be set < 1200 kg Launchers with re-ignitable cryogenic LOX/LH2 upper stages, like Atlas 5, Delta 4 or the Indian GSLV (stage under development) allow quite efficient GEO direct injection. The development of the ESC-B with the re-ignitable LOX/LH2 Vinci engine for Ariane has been stopped and the Soyuz has a Kerosene/LOX upper stage, similar in Isp to what Proton has. One could investigate use of ADN based green propellants, as studied by SSC currently. Note: The optional apogee engine proposed by OHB in their latest design makes these comments obsolete. 2006/06/29 SES ASTRA PROPRIETARY Slide 5
Technical concept Use of small Geostationary platform, to be developed Dry mass <1100kg, 3-4kW P/L-power Compatible with Proton, Zenit, Soyuz, Ariane-5(TBC) launchers Ku-band services into regional spot beams 16 to 20 x 85W active TWTs high G/T for VSAT-services, preferably using VSAT-frequencies EIRP compatible with DTH Ka-band anchor beams 4 x 100W TWTs Options, subject to accommodation constraints: Possible addition of BSS-channels for broadcast (TV) services Utilization of ISL (RF or optical) Improve single-hop reach with additional satellites 2006/06/29 SES ASTRA PROPRIETARY Slide 6
