2 SA APPLICATION INFORMATION Applicants must submit PDF applications by WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 th by MIDNIGHT via to jmartofel@cinema.usc.edu or in person to SCA 427. NOTE: Students applying for SOUND positions must also an additional copy of their SA application in PDF format to Esther Pak (epak@cinema.usc.edu) by the same deadline. Returning SOUND SAs must also submit an application to STILL be considered. NOTE: Students applying for EDITING positions must also an additional copy of their SA application in PDF format to Reine-Claire (rdousarkissian@cinema.usc.edu) by the same deadline. Returning EDITING SAs must also submit an application to STILL be considered. Absolutely NO applications will be accepted after the deadline without prior approval. SA APPLICATION CHECKLIST Please review and confirm the following statements. If there are any uestions or conflicts, contact Jonathan Martofel at jmartofel@cinema.usc.edu ASAP to clear them up ahead of time. I have met all the pre-reuisites needed to SA the course for which I am applying. (Refer to the grid of positions and reuirements provided on the final pages of this application.) If selected, I WILL ATTEND a mandatory general orientation session on the Friday prior to the beginning of the semester: FRIDAY, JANUARY 5 th at 8:30 AM in SCA This orientation is for all Production SA s à SA contracts will be signed here! -SA s may also be asked to attend other training sessions as reuired by faculty. If I accept more than one (1) SA position, I will make certain that total hours worked DO NOT average more than TWENTY (20) HOURS PER WEEK. -I can only accept TWO (2) 10-hour-per-week positions in any given semester. I am submitting my financial aid summary and completed course summary -Online screen grabs allowed. Please try to include these in the same PDF application. I am a student in good standing and I am taking the necessary units needed to be a full time student (8 units for graduate students / 12 units for undergraduates) -Override exceptions are allowed for students working on an advanced project and/or are in their last semester, but they must be reuested via and approved. I have read over all the rules on pages 5-9 of this application (including reuirements and pay rates), and I understand what my duties and expectations will be as an SA. 2

Please type in the area below or attach a separate typed sheet. Your response to this uestion is entirely optional, but will improve your chances of being selected, as the professor(s) will be able to learn more about you. 4

5 SA SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT Student Assistants (SAs) must be FULL-TIME students in good standing. SAs must be registered in and satisfactorily complete a minimum of eight (8) units of graduate work each semester in order to apply for the assistantship. Undergraduates must be registered in and complete a minimum of twelve (12) units in order to apply for the assistantship. NOTE: General Awards will NOT be credited to your account if you are not registered for all your reuired units. Students taking fewer units for one of the following reasons may reuest an exception in writing or to Jonathan Martofel (include the number of units you re taking, ID#, and detailed reason): 1. You are in your last semester taking your remaining reuirements OR 2. You are registered in an approved Advanced Project course. Faculty members or facilities managers will interview students for each open position. Final selection of assistants will be made by the professor, track head, and the Production Division. Appointment of assistants in the Production Division is made on a semester-by-semester basis. Assistantship positions are NOT automatically renewed and you must be re-hired every semester. If you are already the recipient of an academic scholarship that is over $5,000 for the school year, you do not ualify to receive the SA student aid with your SA position(s). You are still eligible to accept the position, as this does not affect hourly pay. Please contact Cedric Berry for additional details. All chosen SAs must attend a mandatory general SA orientation session on the FRIDAY morning before classes commence. After you are hired, specific information will be ed to you closer to the date. If you miss this important orientation, you risk losing your SA position! NOTE: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN STUDENTS WORK IF THEY ARE NOT ON THE PAYROLL SYSTEM (i.e. have met with Cookie Clayton and have access to Workday). EVALUATION AND CONTINUANCE/TERMINATION OF SA POSITIONS SAs are evaluated throughout the semester by their assigned instructor and corresponding track heads. The following criteria will be used for possible termination and re-appointment consideration: The assistant must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and make satisfactory progress toward his/her degree. SAs must submit their hours on the Workday online timekeeping system part of the USC employee gateway portal making sure to submit their times worked AT LEAST once every two weeks in accordance to the payroll deadlines. a. Your inability to use the payroll system is considered a reflection of your level of responsibility and will affect your eligibility for present and future appointments. b. SA s must take a mandatory 30-minute consecutive break every 5 hours. SA s cannot work more than 8 hours in a day, 20 hours in a week, and 7 days in a row (inclusive of all jobs at SCA). No OVERTIME is permitted without prior approval (please be mindful when working multiple jobs). SA s and faculty work in a tight collaboration. If at any time during the semester communication deteriorates and it no longer feels like a good fit, the faculty and the Production Division reserve the right to dismiss the SA. Production Student Assistants represent the Division within the SCA, and in turn, the School to the University at large. Therefore, the highest standards of personal and academic behavior are demanded of assistants in Production. An assistant, whose actions, either in the classroom or out, result in disciplinary action, will have their assistantship immediately terminated. 5

6 SA PAY SYSTEM AND RATES Our pay system has 8 levels. Levels A, B, and C are paid hourly wages. D-H receive wages plus student aid, starting with $1,000 at Level D, and rising $1,000 per level, topping at $5,000. The student aid appears as a General Award on student fee bills, and can be used to pay tuition; in addition, if the total exceeds the amount owed, the excess can be withdrawn and used for any purpose the student wishes. Hourly wages are paid through Payroll. NOTE: If you are already the recipient of an academic scholarship that is over $5,000 for the school year, you do not ualify to receive the SA student aid with your SA position(s). You are still eligible to accept the position, as this does not affect hourly pay. The SA jobs are grouped in three (3) Stages. The structure is as follows: STAGE 1: A $12/hour B $12/hour C $12/hour STAGE 2: D $12/hour plus $1,000 student aid E $12/hour plus $2,000 student aid F $12/hour plus $3,000 student aid STAGE 3: G $12/hour plus $4,000 student aid H $12/hour plus $5,000 student aid Students must hold a Stage One job for one semester in order to ualify for a Stage Two job, and must hold a Stage Two job to ualify for a Stage Three job. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis and based on previous applicable experience. SA JOBS AND PREREQUISITES Proceeding is the list of SA positions, grouped by pay level. We have included facilities and lab jobs, which ualify students for classroom positions (i.e. Lucas and RZC Euipment Centers, Post, SPO, Sound, and RZC Avid labs). All SA ships are a maximum of 10 hours per week, unless otherwise noted. If unclear, please be sure to get clarification from Jonathan Martofel (jmartofel@cinema.usc.edu). You are students first. You should not work more than 20 hours total in any given work week (Thursday-Wednesday); this must be reflected on the Workday payroll system. All classroom positions reuire you to have taken the class, or course euivalent, in addition to any additional res listed, including being at USC for at least 1 semester. NOTE: Compensation for some of these positions will be funded by donors. If you end up with one of these positions, you will be notified via by STUDENT SERVICES who oversees scholarship distribution asking you to submit a gratitude letter thanking the donor. 6
