1 Chapter 2 Ganesa Library This chapter discusses the information of Ganesa Library, the place where the writer did the internship. The information in this chapter includes short profile of the institution, vision, mission, activities, organizational structure, strategies, and short-term work program of Ganesa Library. Short Profile of Ganesa Library Ganesa Library is a place to read and borrow books for free with various collections of book for children and adults both domestic and foreign. Ganesa Library is located in Jl. Raya Songgolangit number 30 Gentan, Baki Sukoharjo was established on the basis of a program called NGO Ganesa. The establishment of NGO Ganesa aims to empower and improve the welfare of people and improve the quality of human resources in order to be knowledgeable, open, tolerant, and anti discrimination. Ganesa Library was founded based on the idea of Michael Mrowka and Debra Lunn. They are the owners of Lunn Studio in Ohio, USA, which is engaged in the development of printed batiks that are suitable for American nuances. Drawn from their ideas and support Ganesa Library was then built in At the beginning, Ganesa Library opened only for employees of Batik Pria Tampan and their families who become partners of Michael and Debra in Indonesia. However, with the increasing number of book collection now Ganesa Library opens for public. Ganesa Library is divided into adult room and children room. Ganesa always updates the book collection at least once a month to attract the visitor s attention and fulfill the needs of visitors. Visitors can recommend new books if Ganesa does not have that book. For visitors who recommend the book will be the first borrower, which will be informed via SMS after the book is available. Visitors can borrow a maximum of 4 books for a payback time of 10 days and can be extended via SMS to get 10 additional days. Visions and Missions of Ganesa Library A. The visions of Ganesa are as follows: Bringing Indonesia to be capable of prospering themselves through the opportunity to read and learn independently.
2 B. The missions of Ganesa are formulated below: 1. Establish a library as a free public library and a community center. 2. Make learning and reading fun by providing free access to Indonesian and English books with a comfortable atmosphere. Prepare all the equipment used for activities in Ganesa Library. Activities in Ganesa Library Ganesa Library held many routine activities for children and adult every week. The activities in Ganesa Library are as follows: 1. Telling a story is an activity for 3 years old children and elementary school students for free. This event is held every Saturday at 2.00 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. This activity includes; telling a story to children, watching children's movie, playing, singing and coloring. This activity aims to increase children s interest in reading at an early age and show the moral of the whole story that can make children more intelligent and humane. 2. Ganesa English Speaking (GES) is an English discussion that is open for public. GES held every Friday and Sunday at 3.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. This activity is attended by the high school students, college students and general public. There are several activities in Ganesa English Speaking such as informal discussion in English, debates in English, games and discussion of English idiom. This activity aims to improve English language skills, motivation and socialize among participants. 3. Ganesa Reading Community (GRC) is a routine activity conducted once a month with the purpose for sharing knowledge about the book that has been read by the participants. GES is held once a month on the last Sunday of every month. The vision of this activity is to create a society that is able to share information and knowledge from books. While the mission of this activity is holding regular meeting once a month that discusses books which are read by the participants. GRC is open to Ganesa members and the public. 4. Ganesa nulis Community (GnC) is a routine activity of Ganesa Library held once a month on the last Sunday of every month, at the same time as GRC. The vision of this activity is to create a society that is able to write, share information and knowledge from books, and become prosperous from writing. The mission
6 of this activity is to organize the routine meetings once a month by inviting authors and teams of publisher to become speakers. GnC is open to Ganesa members and the public. Strategies of Ganesa Library to attract visitors Some important things that must be done so that people are interested to read and borrow books at Ganesa Library are: 1. Update a collection of books on an ongoing basis at least 1 or 2 times a month with a collection of books that attract public as readers. The absence of additional book collection will make people less interested in visiting Ganesa Library. 2. Set the place to read in the form of sitting on the floor and provides pillows in adult room so that readers feel comfortable when reading a book. 3. Cover all the books and use the air conditioner to reduce the humidity of books to make the collections of book durable. 4. Accommodate the aspirations of visitors or members by providing folders of recommendation book and books that will be borrowed. Availability it books is then distributed via SMS. 5. Provide all services for free, including borrowing books, registration, and parking. 6. Serve with heart. Short-Term Work Program of Ganesa The short-term work program of Ganesa Library is implemented based on the periods set by the managing board as follows: 1. Conduct an inventory, record books, tracking back, and digitization the manuscripts of the archipelago to save the nation s assets to science. 2. Make home of learning (place to read) which is intended for the public with a vision of a nonprofit. 3. Establish cooperation with other institutions, both government and private sector from domestic and foreign, in the form of support or assistance that will be used for society interest. 4. Conduct the anti-racism campaign and develop a life of mutual respect and tolerance with the diversity of the nation that can be done through sharing in the place of reading.
7 5. Conduct review and publication in the social field. 6. Conduct discussions, seminars, and education in the field of culture, art, and social. 7. Conduct discussions or book review within a certain period with different topics. 8. Design and create a comfortable learning room which provides flexibility for people to gain knowledge for free. 9. Add collection of books in a sustainable in home of learning in the form of books of various classifications, VCD and DVD for knowledge. 10. Make a study room or reading room of children by adding educational games (EDU TOYS)
