Pick up on the 2nd beat of the first measure of Q. Play to R. We have crossed the printed score of the 1st measure of R and replaced it simply with a dotted half note (three beats), with the fourth beat of that measure a rest. (3) Segment III (13 measures). Play through the end. We slow down considerably in the last 5 measures. There is a lot of rubato in this piece, so please follow me closely. I will be counting segments I and II in 2s, and Segment III in 4s. 15) COLONEL BOGEY MARCH. 1. Mark: 5=A, 21=B, 37 (Repeat sign)=c, 54 (one after the 2 nd ending)=d, 86 (Trio)=E, 101=F. 2. Instrumentation. Violin 1; Violin 2; Viola; Cello; String Bass; Flute 1 & 2; Oboe 1 & 2, Clarinet in Bb and A 1 & 2; Bassoon 1 & 2; French Horn in F 1-4; Trumpet in 1 & 2; Trombones 1-3; Tuba; Tympani, Harp. 1. Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, String Bass, Flute 1 & 2, Piccolo, Oboe 1 & 2, Clarinet in Bb 1 & 2, Bassoon 1 & 2, Horn 1-4, Trumpet in Bb 1 & 2, Trombone 1 3, Tuba, Tympani, Percussion. Please use the score marked June Discard the old score we used in the past. 4
5 (1) Play from the top to E. We are cutting E-Hf (the ballet section). Pick up at I, cut section J, pick up at K and play to end. (2) Please note that some of the instruments (Flute 2; Piccolo; Oboe 1, 2; Clarinets; Bassoons; Tympani) have a repeat sign at Ms. 5, with a 1st Ending starting at 2 before A going on to the Repeat sign at B. At B, return to 5 and play from there to the 2nd Ending (at B), and continue to the end. If you don't have the repeat sign and the return, just follow the score. (3) We are trying to choreograph Herald Trumpets for the fanfare in letters C & D. 21) STARS AND STRIPES. 1. Mark the following: 5 = A, 1 st ending = 20, 2 nd ending = = B which is the 1 st repeat sign. Trio (39) = C. 71 = D at the first repeat sign after the Trio (the 4 1/8 notes run is the pickup to D and falls in the 2 nd half of bar 70). E = = the 1 st ending. 127 = the very last bar of the piece (2 nd ending). Play all repeats. 2. Choreography: Flutes and piccolo stand up briskly on the downbeat of #91 (4 bars before E). Sit down promptly at the first ending at the end of 126. Similarly, trumpets and trombones stand up together briskly on the downbeat of #91 (4 bars before E) the second time. Slow down these 4 measures. 3. In 94 (one before E): Rit both times, although more so on the repeat. Watch conductor. 4. In #95-100: The first sentence of the brass repeat is allargando, slower than usual and then much faster on the second sentence (#110-end). Follow conductor. 5. Trumpets and trombones play 109 an octave higher the second time around. 6. Hold the last note in measure 110 on the very last repeat when the brass is standing. Then play presto. 7. Last measure (#127) rit. Note: In the Preconcert rehearsal of this piece, we start from one measure before D. 22) GOD BLESS AMERICA (Festival Edition). Start at the top playing the 5 measures Intro (notice the changing meters). Skip to F (24) play through 42 (one before K). Cut K, pick up on the very last measure. 23) YANKEE DOODLE MEDLEY (Encore). 1. Note: We added: a. Measure (i). At the beginning of the piece. Trombone gliss one half note on lower octave on Bb going up an octave. Measure tacet for all other instruments. b. Ms 161. At the end with one 1/8 note on the downbeat, same as the last measure. 2. Mark the following: A is 5, B is 21, C is 37, D is 53, E is 69, F is 85, G is 101, H is 117, 1 st Ending is 132(a), 2 nd Ending is 132(b), J is 133, Last Measure is 161 (New). 3. As in last year, we want to liven the piece a bit by assigning certain phrases to specific instruments only (a la Britten s Young Person s Guide to the Orchestra ). This was enthusiastically received by our audience, so I ll go into some detail describing it. However, the scores are marked up and so, the following is just FYI. In most cases, we did not add, but rather taceted some instruments, thus featuring only others, per below. 4. Ms 17 to first note of 19 (Born on the Fourth of July). Solo Trumpet only, with mutes. All other instruments tacet. This Trumpet can stand down Ms Notice in Ms 16: In all instruments, make the last note a 1/8 instead of ¼, staccato, followed by a 1/8 rest. 5. Ms (Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a pony). Piccolos and flutes only, plus Snare Drum, giving early American fife effect. Nobody else plays that melody, except the instruments playing the 1/8 notes in these measures. 6. Ms (I m a Yankee Doodle Dandy). Upper strings (and possibly lead electric guitar) only, play melody, pizzicato ff. Keep the wood blocks throughout Ms (I m a Yankee Doodle Do or Die). Lower strings (and possibly electric guitar) only, play melody, pizz & ff. If not enough strings, join # 6 & 7, i.e. all strings play from Ms 37 43, pizz. 8. Pick up to Ms (for the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming). Xylophone and Glock on the melody. No other instruments on the melody. However, keep the instruments playing harmony. Keep the percussion. 5
6 9. Ms (Give my regards to Broadway, Remember me to Herald Square)(1 st Time). Orchestra and chorus whistle the melody, with the flute & piccolo. Lower strings play their scores. Other instruments tacet (but whistling). 10. Ms (Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a pony). Piccolos and Flutes only, with snare drums and instruments playing harmony. Similar to Make the glisses ff in: a. Intro gliss b. 7-8 "Dandy" c "Dandy" d. 32 "Pony" e "Dandy" f. 64 "Pony" g "Broadway" h "Harold Square" i "Soon be there" j "Dandy" k. 139 "Or die". Split the half note into two 1/4 notes, with the second one in octava. l. 144 "Pony". 12. Dr. Bonifazi whistles the melody with the flutes in 29-32, (leads the chorus whistling), # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # 6
