1 RULES FOR SUBMITTING ARTICLES Codex Aquilarensis is an annual scientific journal that publishes original articles dedicated to the investigation of medieval art and culture. Articles in digital format can be sent to the following address: Originality Articles submitted for publication must be original, unpublished and refer to issues relating to the Middle Ages. The originality of the article is a requirement and must be certified by the authors. All articles will then be verified during the evaluation process. Editorial Policy Essays should focus on developing visual culture analysis and functional organization of space in places of worship in the historical time period previous to the sixteenth century. As far as possible, essays should consider discussions on the theory of iconography and interdisciplinary approaches. Contributions that explore the latest problems developed in areas such as semiotics, cultural anthropology, ideology critique and new perspectives on the history of representation will be well received. All essays received will be evaluated by specialists and their decisions shall be communicated promptly to the authors. A double-blind procedure will be used for the selection of articles to be published. In addition to the editorial board, which is external to the publishing institution of the journal, Codex Aquilarensis uses the Advisory board and an array of advisors and reviewers, composed of prestigious members of universities and academies from Spain, France, United States, England, Italy and Portugal to evaluate the articles. Heading The heading of the text will be composed of the title and under this the name and surnames of the author(s) followed by the name of the university or institution where the investigation has been developed. In all cases the names should be written exactly as the author would like his or her academic affiliation to be addressed. In addition, the address and address of the institution should be included as well as the personal address of the author if so desired. Codex Aquilarensis will be given authorization to publish the of the person who signs the article. Length The articles will have a length of a maximum of 70,000 characters with spaces and notes included. A summary/abstract will be included with a maximum of 900 characters (9-10 lines) in the same language as the article and also in English. Please include 5 keywords. The articles should be in Word format with font Times New Roman, 12 points and single-spaced. If desired, the author can create a summary of the different subtitles included in the article. Style Writers must submit their essays with the greatest possible clarity. Essays should be in Spanish or other languages (English, French and Italian) and cited texts should be translated into these
2 languages within the body of the essay. If a standard translation is cited, the original language will not be included unless it is crucial for the argument of the essay. It is the author s responsibility that the information in their essay is accurate, including dates and verification of all references. All references in the text and footnotes should be free of errors. The use of italics is restricted to paragraph headings and sub-headings within the body of the essay. Place names shall be specified normally in the language of the text e.g. in English: Milan and not Milano; Lisbon and not Lisboa. Saints names will be written using capital letters while their religious title will be written in lowercase: saint Isidore of Seville, saint Augustine of Hipona. However, when mentioning a place containing a saint s name it will be written in capital letters: San Isidoro de León, Sant Jaume de Llierca, Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, San Pietro in Montorio. Latin expressions such as ídem, eadem, op. cit., cf., ibidem, infra, supra, et al. should be written in print and not in italics. Do not use italics when mentioning archival fonds. Eliminate the dots between each letter in an abbreviation (ACA, not A.C.A.). When citing a sheet or sheets (f., ff.) from manuscripts and/ or other printed material, it should be indicated if it is recto or verso in the following way: f.14v (this indication will always be separated by a space and the corresponding number) If works from magazines, collections, repertoires, etc. need to used repeatedly, include the complete title in the first footnote followed by their abbreviations. Use of capital letters Capital letters will only be used for proper names and terms that identify places and honorific institutions: Spain, Church However, personal titles and cardinal references will be written in lowercase: north, western Galicia, the king of Navarra, the bishop of Pamplona. Notes All notes will go at the foot of the page and will be flagged by a superscripted number. It should precede a punctuation mark if they coincide with one another. The notes can be bibliographic or contain other contents. In this latter case, it is recommended to abbreviate the extension. Bibliographic references Except in special cases, the bibliographical notes must be included in the footnotes and not at the end of the articles. Quotations must observe the following rule: author s initial in capital letter, surname (in VERSALES, except for the first letter, which will go in capitalized, books title in Italics, place of publication, year and number of page/s (p. o pp.). It all must be separated by commas. Mention of the publishing house is not required.

The conventional abbreviations for biblical books may be used: Ex., Mc., Ap. Use of italics, quotations and small caps Italics will be used to highlight or emphasize a concept or text fragment or to include a citation in a language different from the one used in the article. Citations from other authors or historical sources go between quotation marks, not in italics, and within the text unless it is more than three lines in which case it should be in a separate
4 paragraph, indented and font size 11 point, one point less than the rest of the article. The notes should always be between quotation marks. The abbreviated form of century is not allowed (c. or cent.). Roman numerals should be written in SMALL CAPS and not in CAPITALS Ex.: XII century (not XII century).
