Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., First edition of this monumental work, covering every species of tree native to North America (excluding Mexico). Folio volumes with each genus described and accompanied by numerous large, beautifully detailed engravings. Sargent ( ) not only describes the physical aspects, locations and ecological role of each species, but also their historical backgrounds, including those of the people who discovered and named them. The engravings were all done after the original drawings by Charles Edward Faxon ( ), an instructor of botany at the Bussey Institution at Harvard. He was appointed assistant director of the Arnold Arboretum by Sargent, where he was in charge of the library and herbarium. Sargent graduated from Harvard University before serving in the Civil War. He became professor of horticulture at Harvard, and was later appointed Arnold Professor of Arboriculture, a position he held until his death. He was the founder and first director of the Arnold Arboretum, which, due largely to his efforts, now houses one of the finest collections of botanicals in the United States. 740 engraved plates. Complete in 14 volumes. All volumes in the original publisher boards with spine labels. The spines are a little tanned or aged and a few corners bumped but certainly minimal. The best conditioned of this complete 14-volume set we have seen. $7, Burroughs, William S. PANTAPON ROSE. (Charleston, WV: Univ. of Charleston, 1995). First edition. 3 11. Catlin, George. THE NORTH AMERICAN IN- DIANS. Edinburgh: John Grant, First of this edition. Two volumes. 58 letters and notes on the manners, customs, and conditions of Indians in North America, written during eight years travel among the wildest tribes, from Catlin attempted to paint portraits of men and women in every tribe, together with views of animals, villages, games, etc. Includes 400 illustrations in black-and-white, engraved from the author's original paintings. With a folding, colored map of Indian localities in Vol 1, and map of United States Indian frontier in Vol 2, as called for. Original dark red cloth lettered and elaborately decorated in pictorial gilt and black on the covers; top edge gilt. A very nice set, with minor wear on corners & spine ends, and some minor foxing on endpapers (all other pages free of foxing and bright). Bookplates in each volume of Cecil William Kaye. $1, Christie, Agatha. THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES. NY: Dodd, Mead & Co-mpany, The second A- merican edition of her first book. As Christie collectors may know, the 1920 American first edition and subsequent first English edition sell for $50,000 or more in dust jacket; even without a jacket, they go for $5,000 to $10,000. So, this edition--with its pictorial front panel the same as on the original edition's--is a reasonable alternative. The publication date, 1926, appears on the title page. The book is very good to fine; in a dust jacket chipped on spine ends and corners, but with no lettering affected. $3, Conkling, Roscoe and Margaret THE BUTTERFIELD OVERLAND MAIL Glendale: Arthur H. Clark Company, First edition. Three volumes in all. Butterfield's instructions, "nothing on God's earth must stop the United States mail!" The first overland postal service from the Mississippi River to the Pacific coast; its organization and operation. Conroy's four years at the Citadel where Lt. Colonel Nugent Courvoisie, "The Boo," was in charge of meting out punishment to the young men accused of breaking Citadel law. Conroy was later involved in establishing a scholarship fund in the Boo's name. A fine copy in blue cloth with white lettering; in a fine white dustwrapper with only the barest soiling and two tiny closed tears. $2, Conroy, Pat. THE GREAT SANTINI. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, First edition. SIGNED by the author on the title page. His first novel, and in our humble opinion a great book, made into a wonderful movie with Robert Duval as Santini (not all our friends appreciated it as much as we). Red dot on bottom page edges, otherwise fine in dustwrapper with a few unobtrusive nicks but without any foxing on the back, which is usually found with this title. $ Coolidge, Susan. NINE LITTLE GOSLINGS. Boston: Roberts Brothers, First edition. By Sarah Chauncy Woolsey, written under the pseudonym "Susan Coolidge." Coolidge first gained popularity for her "Katy Did" series in 1872; the series--a greater literary influence in England than in the United States--has since been recognized as a precursor to the popular British girls' school stories that proliferated in the twentieth century. Nine stories with nursery-rhyme titles: "Goosey, Goosey Gander," "Little Bo-Peep," "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," etc. Illustrated throughout at chapter headings, and with a full-page frontis drawing. Gift inscription dated 1875, spine ends, hinges and corners showing wear, and black endpapers with a few small skinned marks, but still very good. This 1875, first printing seems scarce. $500. A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF HIS FIRST BOOK 17. Crews, Harry. THE GOSPEL SINGER. New York: Wm. Morrow

4 & Co., First edition of the author's first book. Book collector's bookplate SIGNED by the author, laid in. THE WRONG CASE. New York: Random House (1975). First edition of the AUTHOR'S FIRST MYSTERY. His second and, to our mind, still his best book. INSCRIBED, "Dear... 'Thanks old buddy' James Crumley." Tiny dig on front cover (binding error) and Random remainder "house" on bottom edge, otherwise fine in dustwrapper with a few light creases. $450. FIRST ISSUE OF DARWIN S FIRST BOOK uniformally bound in nineteenth century, half leather with marbled boards, endpapers and page edges, with the third volume (Darwin's) brighter than the rest. Half-title page in volume III only. Some wear and minor reinforcing of bindings, marbeled boards of the Appendix to Vol. II somewhat scuffed, spine lettering faded but readable; some staining and foxing to text pages and plates. Altogether, a nice set. $15, Darwin, Charles. ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES: By Means of Natural Selection. London: John Murray, First edition, only issue. The most influential scientific work of the nineteenth century. Only 1250 copies of the first edition were printed, and this copy is one of the earliest ones, with the earliest ads (June 1859). Arguably "the most important biological book ever written" (Freeman) and "the most important single work in science" (Dibner 199). "What the dropping of the first atomic bomb was to the twentieth century, the publication of Darwin's ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES was to the nineteenth century. Battle lines were drawn on both religious and scientific grounds" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Printing and the Mind of Man 344. Freeman 373, binding variant a, no priority established. With one folding table and 32 pp. ads. A fine copy in the original green blind-and-gilt stamped cloth; spine area reinforced with new matching cloth behind, and with new linen hinges added. In specially made, velvet-lined, clamshell box with rounded leather spine, raised bands and leather spine labels. $175, Darwin, Charles, Robert FitzRoy and Phillip Parker King. NARRATIVE OF THE SURVEYING VOYAGES OF HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS ADVENTURE AND BEAGLE. London: Henry Colburn, First edition. The five years of the second of these voyages were among the most important, if not the most important, years in Darwin's intellectual life as they prepared him for his lifework. The narratives of these expeditions--conducted between the years 1826 and describe the examination of the southern shores of South America, and the Beagle's circumnavigation of the globe. Four volumes, including the Appendix to Volume II. Volume I contains King's account of the expedition in the Adventure made between 1826 and 1830, surveying the coasts of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. In Vol. II (and the appendix volume), Capt. Fitzroy provides the narrative of the Beagle's second voyage, between 1831 and 1836 to South America, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. Volume III, the Darwin volume, constitutes the first issue of Darwin's first book, which was also issued separately later the same year as JOURNAL OF THE RESEARCHES INTO THE GEOLOGY AND NATURAL HISTORY OF THE VARIOUS COUNTRIES. The large (loose) map of South America intended for Vol. I is in a pocket at the rear of Vol. III, and is in very good condition. One chart of South America is bound in Volume I (as called for). High-quality images of the other 7 loose maps/charts provided. The four volumes are 21. Darwin, Charles. "On the Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants": In the Journal of the Linnean Society, Vol IX, Nos. 33 & 34. London: The Linnean Society, The original publication of this work, constituting the first 118 pages of the 128 page journal (Freeman 833). A rare item that was followed by two offprints and an enlarged published version in Fragile paper covers, which appear to have been reattached, are a little soiled and aged, but still very good, especially considering the age and fragility of this item. Housed in specially made clamshell box with leather spine. $7, Darwin, Charles. "On the Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants." London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green The first offprint from the original publication of this work in The Journal of the Linnean Society, Vol IX, Nos. 33 & 34. Freeman (834) describes this as the first offprint with publisher as above, and with the further publishers Williams & Norgate (couldn't get it all in) and he states there is no comma after Roberts which is true here. This copy matches the description except that Freeman states the cover has "[Price Four Shillings]" on title page, and this copy does not have that

5 line. Pagination: cover as title page, [2] with title, contents and text, and plain back cover. A rare item followed by another offprint (with a different publisher), and an enlarged published version in Front cover worn on edges and with few tiny holes. Plain back cover with some foxing which has offset to last page, otherwise very good. Covers a little soiled and aged but still very good in specially made clamshell box with leather spine. $5, , Candolle thanks Darwin for sending EXPRESSION, "which has made him wonder whether his shyness in public until the age of 55 resulted from fear of subjecting his face to ridicule" and "criticizes F. Galton's HEREDITARY GENUIS [1869] for neglecting environmental influence" (Darwin Correspondence Project). According to Freeman in CHARLES DARWIN: A COMPANION (1978), Darwin sent a first of ORIGINS to de Candolle; Candolle visited Darwin at Down House at least once; and Candole's GEOGRAPHIE BOTANIQUE RAISSONEE "was very important to [Darwin] in his study of cultivated plants. A bright copy, bumped at the top of the rear cover, but otherwise nearly fine. $20,000. WORK IN WHICH THE WORD EVOLUTION FIRST APPEARS 23. Darwin, Charles. THE DESCENT OF MAN AND SELECTION IN RELATION TO SEX. London: John Murray, First edition, second issue, with "When" as first word, page 297, volume one; and with the list of works-- versus errata--on the verso of the title leaf, volume two. Darwin's most famous work after ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES, and the one in which the word evolution first appears--on page 2 of the first volume--before its appearance in the sixth edition of ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES the following year. (Freeman). Original polished green cloth, gilt-lettered and decorated on the spines, decorated in blind on the covers. Corners a bit rubbed and spine ends very lightly frayed, with spine of volume one worn more than that of volume two. $3,000. PRESENTATION COPYTO BOTANIST ALPHONSE DE CANDOLLE 24. Darwin, Charles. THE EXPRES- SION OF THE EMOTIONS IN MAN AND ANIMALS: With Photographic and Other Illustrations. London: John Murray, First edition, second issue, with misprint p.208, "htat." Seven photographic plates (3 of which are folding) numbered with Arabic numerals--the probable earliest state of the plates (Freeman 1142). PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED ON THE FIRST BLANK PAGE, "From the Author," presumably by one of the publisher's clerks. Darwin often requested his books be sent to colleagues by the publisher on his behalf: "You can write from the author on the first page if you please" (C. Darwin in a letter to the publisher of CORAL REEFS). This copy with a label typed in French on the front pastedown indicating it is from the library of DE CANDOLLE. Alphonse de Candolle was a widely respected Swiss botanical taxonomist with whom Darwin corresponded over the course of several decades. In a letter from Candolle to Darwin dated Jan, 14, 25. After being turned down by many publishers, the 3rd volume, IRONWEED, won the Pulitzer Prize & the National Book Critics Circle award. 10 relations. The wave of young white people in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s were so enamored of jazz and swing music that they adopted the black culture as their own. They would associate mainly with black people, distancing themselves from white society. This movement gave rise to the hipster of the 1940s, the beats of the 1950s, and the hippie of the 1960s. Black-andwhite, stapled paperwraps with mild aging to white portions, a fine copy of this title which shows up with more wear in most cases. $500. SCARCE CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED COPY 72. Brown Jr with kindest regards, John P. Marquand." Also includes two typed letters to Brown signed by Marquand: one saying he can send the books, and one apologizing for getting his name wrong. Brown, a famous book collector, always went by H. Tatnall Brown. The letters are tipped to the endpaper and verso of half-title page (across from title page). First printing, with "Lovely Pearl" on the first line of page 19, as we think it is in all first printings. Our COLLECTED BOOKS stated the first issue had "Pretty Pearl," based on the FPAA entry, but we're convinced now that only later printings have "Pretty Pearl." It would seem illogical to change "Lovely Pearl" for the second issue, then change back to "Pretty Pearl" for future printings. We believe the issue point is not valid. We asked Broccoli about the point in his FPAA entry, but he could not explain where it came from. Faint vertical lines on some pages, as usual for this title, otherwise very good to fine in dustwrapper with small professional repair at top of spine and to a few tiny chips. A very nice copy of an unaccountably scarce book, and particularly so with what would appear to be an early inscription, as both letters are dated in April $3, Matthiessen, Peter. RADITZER: A Novel. The later issue in black cloth and with photo cropped and captioned "Author on the left," is relatively common. Judging from the ink and the color of the monogram, the card probably dates from between 1878 and It was pasted at one time and the blank verso has a little glue residue on one side. Aged but nice condition. $1, Updike, John. THE MAGIC FLUTE: Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. New York: Knopf (1962). First edition. SIGNED by the author "John Updike Beverly Farms, MA." Mozart's last opera, adapted for children by Updike and illustrated by Warren Chappell. One of Updike's hardest first editions to locate in nice condition. In the pictorial Gibraltar binding (noted on back cover) with light blue-green border, which was issued simultaneously with the trade edition, and without dustwrapper. Very minor rubbing but still in fine condition. Unusual for Updike to note his hometown when signing. $ Updike, John. THE RING: With Musical Themes by Richard Wagner. New York: Alfred A. Knopf (1964). First edition. SIGNED by the author, "John Updike Beverly Farms, MA." Adapted and Illustrated by John Updike and Warren Chappell. The Gibraltar edition in pictorial dark green boards with very light rubbing to tips, otherwise a fine copy, as issued without dustwrapper, and scarce thus. This issue was published simultaneously with the Knopf trade edition in cloth and dustwrapper and the Knopf orange pictorial boards edition, also issued without dustwrapper (although it's possible the orange came later.) Unusual for Updike to note his hometown when signing. $ Vonnegut, Kurt [Jr.]. MISSING IN ACTION. Lexington: Petro III Graphics First edition. One of 100 SIGNED numbered copies bound by Walt Bartholomew, Sylph Publications, Tucson, in brown Nigerian goatskin and marbled paper with full Record Basalt cloth slipcase. A letter to his

16 parents telling of his ordeals after capture in December 1944, and a forced march to Limberg, 60 miles without water, food, or sleep. They were locked up without sanitation and strafed by the Royal Air Force, killing 150. Moved to a P. O. W. camp in Muhlburg to do hard labor without medical attention or clothes and little food. Evacuated to Hellexisdorf until war end when Russian planes strafed killing fourteen. Stole a team and wagon and got to American lines. Letter was dated May 29, 1945 and is signed by Vonnegut with a self-portrait dated May 29, Also bound in is a signed "Kilgore Trout" drawing. Beautiful production. As new. There were also 26 signed lettered copies with a separate signed print laid in. $1, White, E. B. STUART LITTLE. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers (1945). First edition. Pictures by Garth Williams. A classic children's book made into a popular movie. A fine, bright copy in dust jacket with some small chips and minor wear including a paperclip impression at top of back panel. Still, an attractive copy of this title. $1,250. NICE ASSOCIATION 125. Work, John W. (E. Franklin Frazier) AMERICAN NEGRO SONGS AND SPIRITUALS. New York: Crown Publishers (1940). First edition. INSCRIBED, "To Marie and E. Franklin Frazier with affection and esteem from their friend. John W. Work." Work attended Julliard School of Music, and received degrees in music from Columbia and Yale. He taught music education and theory at Fisk University for thirty-nine years. In 1946, he became the director of the Jubilee Singers and reorganized the group into an ensemble of mixed voices. He and Frazier became friends when Frazier was the research professor of sociology at Fisk University ( ) where he published a series of articles on African American life and his Ph.D. dissertation, "The Negro Family in Chicago" (1932). Critics claimed that it was the most important study since "The Philadelphia Negro" was published by William Du Bois in Frazier moved to head the sociology department at Howard University in While in this post he published his most important work, "The Negro Family in the United States" (1939). The book was an analysis of the history of the African American family since the 18th century. His most controversial book was his study of the African American middle class, "Black Bourgeoisie" (1957). Although many musicians did not consider black folk songs to have musical credence, this book by Work helped to establish the Negro folk song as a musical form, making it an invaluable contribution to musicology. It contains 230 religious and secular songs, as well as the origins and nature of the various types of black folk songs. The light green cloth is a bit faded but otherwise very good to fine in dust jacket which has been professionally repaired on folds where it had separated. Nice period jacket and a very good association copy. $750. VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED 126. Wyndham, John. THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS. London: Michael Joseph (1957). First edition. Basis for the movie "Village of the Damned." Very good or better with offset on endpapers and light soiling on page edges; in a nice but agedarkened dustwrapper with spine slightly tanned and light soiling. Scarce. $500. Happy Holidays From All of Us at Quill and Brush Wishing you and yours a healthy & happy New Year! Allen, Pat, Beth Patsy and Carl
