Assignment Part 1: Due Wed Feb 14 (25 pts) Literature Research Assignment Objectives (In order of importance) 1) To develop your skills in researching specific topics in the scientific literature and distinguishing between Primary, Secondary and Tertiary literature sources 2) To emphasize the importance of using appropriate literature reference formats. 3) To emphasize the importance of following instructions precisely 4) To provide experience using Inter-Library Loan (ILL) for obtaining scientific articles that are not available locally or on-line. 5) To improve your understanding of the difference between pdf and html type web documents. Part 1 has four requirements -- Be sure to identify your topic at the top of the assignment. 1. Generate a list of 10 references that focus directly upon your research topic at the level of cell and molecular biology (i.e., avoid clinical studies). These references should include: At least five 1 o (primary) sources articles presenting new data and analysis of that data. At least two 2 o (secondary) sources review articles with literature citations. References must be from at least three different databases (one of which must be Biological abstracts / BIOSIS Previews). See page 3 for more details. 2. Group 1 o and 2 o references separately, and use standard reference formats required in all biology courses. Below each reference, give information about how the reference was obtained identify the database, accession #s, and key words. Examples of reference formatting and organization are given below (on page 3-4). (If this is not done, a grade no higher than a C can be earned.) If you are unclear about the difference between 1 o, 2 o and 3 o literature sources, you should consult the information provided with the Intro biology lab courses, which is also available on line at: and speak with your instructor. 3. For one very pertinent 1 o source that is available as a full article in pdf format, print the first page (including the abstract). Articles formatted as HTML documents are not acceptable, 4. Request a 2 O article through interlibrary loan; identify in your reference list which article was requested. This article will not be turned in with Part 1 of the assignment, but you should request the article now since ILL requests may require 2-3 weeks for delivery. You are encouraged to consult with your instructor beforehand regarding the article that you are planning to request. (Note: the library will only obtain through ILL an article that is not available as a full article from any on-line source.) Page 1
Assignment Part 2: Due Wed Mar 28 (25 pts) Objectives (In order of importance) 1) To develop your skills in reading the scientific literature and identifying key concepts. 2) To improve your writing skills. 3) To emphasize the importance of following instructions precisely. 4) To emphasize importance of using appropriate citation and reference formats. 5) To learn something about the research topic. Part 2 has four requirements -- Be sure to identify your topic at the top of the assignment. 1. Write a word summary explaining the relationship of your assigned topic to cell and molecular biology. You must cite at least 3 sources in your summary one of these must be the 2 o article you obtained from ILL. There should be no direct quotation of source information; make sure that you use your own words to explain the topic. If you do not wait to the last minute, you can discuss the topic with your instructor if you have trouble understanding any material. 2. Information must be properly cited, using the citation format (author, year, page). See additional information on page 3 about citation formats. 3. Include a reference list of the articles that you cited in your summary. Do not include in this reference list information about how the reference was obtained. 4. Turn in the first page of the article you received through ILL with the tracking form (or confirmation ) attached. 5. In addition to turning in a paper copy of the assignment you must also submit your assignment to TurnItIn.com. Late submissions to TII.com will be docked 5% per day. ClassID = Biol Key = Page 2
How to access the Online Literature Databases You will need to research your topic using at least 3 databases (one of which must be Biological abstracts / BIOSIS Previews). These are found at the Library Web site: 1. From the Library home page, click on Locate Resources, (as shown in Figure 1). 2. In the window that opens, under Articles, click Research Databases from A to Z (as shown in Figure 2). 3. Navigate through the alphabetic list to find useful literature databases, such as Biological Abstracts / BIOSIS Previews, Medline, Electronic Journal Center (OhioLINK), JSTOR, and others (not all will be equally useful for your topic). Avoid general purpose databases such as LexisNexis, Articles First, etc. 4. Figure 3 shows the BIOSIS Previews search window. You can use the menus to the right to determine where you want to search for the key words you are using. Additional search options can be used by clicking Add Another Field. You can limit the years that are searched at the bottom of the search page. 5. Once you have done the search and have a list of references you can use the search engine to refine your search for the specific Literature Types you are searching for. If you select Literature Types and then Literature Review in the left hand menu it will search for secondary sources. Some articles that you find through a search are not available electronically through on-line literature sources and will need to be obtained through inter-library loan (ILL) instructions follow. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Page 3
How to order an article through Inter-Library loan When using a research database, if an article is not available in print or online, you have the option of requesting it through ILL (Figure 4). Clicking the link will take you to the ILL log-in window (Figure 5). Enter your password, and the ILL request form will open with most of the fields already completed. Submit the request, and in 2-3 weeks you will receive a photocopy of the requested article yours to keep! You can also access the ILL form directly from the Library Home page (Figure 6). Figure 5 Figure 6 Citations and the Literature Cited Section More complete discussion of Citations and References is included in the Guidelines for Writing Lab Reports from the Biol 105 lab manual. Page on which cited Citations information is found. Biology Department requires the following format for all assignments. (Author(s), year of publication, page #) If the source has a single author, then the citation is written as: (Smith, 1992, 97) If the source has two authors, then the citation is written as: (Smith and Jones, 1997, 184) If the source has three or more authors, the abbreviation et al. is used after the first author s name: (Smith et al., 1997, 184) Page 4
References are placed in the Literature Cited section References must be included whenever the text includes citation. Note: although et al. is used in citations, it should never be used in the full reference provided in the Literature Cited section; all authors names must be listed in the order they occur in the original paper. For this assignment, group together references under the headings: Primary sources Secondary sources Reference from a book: Publication year Title of book Where published McKinney M, Schoch R Environmental science: systems and solutions. Sudbury (MA): Jones and Bartlett Publishers; 988p. Authors; last name and initials no periods Publisher # of pages in book [ This article would be cited as (McKinney and Schoch, 1998) ] Note that books may be 2 o or 3 o sources. You will need to check to see whether the text includes citations to determine whether or not it is a 2 o source. Chapter of an edited book: Authors of article Chapter Title Book editor Crabbé J, Barnola P A new conceptual approach to bud dormancy on woody plants. In: Lang G., editor. Plant dormancy. Wallingford, Oxon (GB): CAB International; p Title of book Chapter pages From a journal (1 o and 2 o sources): Authors and year of publication Title of article Smith AB, Jones CD, Banks EF Effects of absenteeism on student grades in biology. American Journal of Biology Class Attendance 123(4): Name of journal Volume (issue): pages in which article appears [ This article would be cited as (Smith, et al., 1994) ] Page 5
