3 UNIVERSITY OF TLLINOIS SENATE COMMITTEE ON THE LIBRARY REPORT FOR THE LIBRARY OF THE To the Members of the University Senate: Your Committee on the Library begs leave to submit the following report for the past year. For the fiscal year , the Board of Trustees made appropriations of $115,250 for the increase of the Library as follows: General Library, $104,500; Medicine and Dentistry, $9,800, and Pharmacy, $950. The appropriation of $104,500 for the General Library in Urbana was assigned to the various schools, colleges, and departments, etc, by the Senate Library Committee* In addition to these book appropriations there was spent for books last year, out of departmental or other funds, $5, and most of these purchases were added to the Library, though some are kept in departmental offices. A schedule of assignments for the purchase of books for the past two years follows. "Regular" assignments are likely to be repeated from year to year, but the amount for any one purpose or department has frequently been changed by the Committee when making the annual assignments. The Committee again authorized the Director to make necessary minor changes or adjustamnts during the year,

Most of these photographs are purchased for immediate use by members of the faculty; but scholars in other universities may borrow them by inter-library loan, Through the activities of a committee of the American Library Association, arrangements have been made to

The Library is on the mailing list of about 17,000 departments, bureaus, offices, corporations, societies, associations, institutions, etc,, located in all parts of the world, though chiefly in the United States, to receive free their current bulletins, reports, and other publications. However, frequent effort is necessary to keen our name on some of these lists and to secure additional kinds of material, much of it published many years ago. During the year special letters or post card requests, chiefly from the Order department, helped to put or to keep our name on mailing lists, and our letters brought to us as gifts or exchanges such materials as the following: Publications of banks and other financial institutions; Municipal and county publications; CCC camp newspapers. During the year the Library sent 10,956 copies (8,957 in ) of 127 (104 in ) University of Illinois publications to libraries and other institutions on our gift or exchange lists; other offices on the campus in accordance with
12 -1eexchange arrangements made by the Library, mailed 13,688 (16,964 in ) copies of 40 (44 in ) additional publications. New exchanges of publications were arranged with 35 (52 in ) additional institutions, and exchanges were discontinued with 9 (11 in ). Regular exchange of publications is now carried on with 1,789 foreign and 1,518 domestic institutions, The number of volumes in the University Library on June 30, 1936 in Urbana was 1,000,447; in Chicago 52,237; total in the University, 1,052,684. There are appended to this report, three statistical tables showing the size, the growth, and the recorded use of the Library, J. M. Mathews J. 0. Draffin J. C, Randall C. L. Metcalf H.
