1 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Inc. Health Care Management Review Author Guide Purpose of the Journal Health Care Management Review publishes papers that apply theoretical frameworks and principles to health services management. Articles should address questions that are timely, interest researchers and management practitioners, inform future research, and affect how health services organizations are managed. Both conceptual papers and those reporting on empirical research should be grounded in a theoretical framework or grow out of empirical research. This requires a thorough literature review. The paper s contribution should be made clear, as should the importance of this new knowledge. The implications for management and research should be addressed. A case study can be an appropriate method to advance knowledge on a topic. However, for a case study to become of interest to managers and researchers beyond the members of the affected organization, it should meet the same criteria as manuscripts that report on other types of research. The journal addresses both a practitioner and academic audience. This means that careful attention should be paid to conceptual, and for empirical research, methodological adequacy as well as management relevance. Manuscript Submission Each issue may be comprised of both solicited and unsolicited manuscripts. Solicited articles: One original and three copies of solicited manuscripts are required. Address manuscripts and correspondence regarding publications to Barbara Miller, 1111 Bethlehem Pike, P.O. Box 908, Springhouse, PA 19477, , ext. 7789, bmiller@lww.com. Unsolicited articles: Authors are encouraged to submit original articles that add new knowledge to the field of health services administration and further research. The decision to accept or reject an article will be made by the editors and will be guided by the judgment of two blind referees. One original and three copies of unsolicited manuscripts are required. Address manuscripts and correspondence to Barbara Miller, 1111 Bethlehem Pike, P.O. Box 908, Springhouse, PA 19477, , ext. 7789, bmiller@lww.com. Copyright Authors must release copyright ownership to their manuscript when it is accepted for publication in HCMR. It is understood that articles submitted for publication in HCMR will not be submitted to any other publication.
2 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Inc. AUTHOR'S MANUSCRIPT CHECKLIST FOR JOURNALS Authors should pay particular attention to the items below before submitting their manuscripts. Manuscript Preparation Manuscripts should be created on IBM-compatible (PC) equipment using Windows 95 or higher operating system. Our preferred software is Microsoft Word. Hard copy and electronic files should be submitted for all text and all artwork. All disks submitted must be new. Disks should be clearly labeled as to operating system and software application. Manuscripts should be double-spaced (including quotations, lists, and references, footnotes, figure captions, and all parts of tables). Manuscripts should be ordered as follows: title page, abstracts, text, references, appendixes, tables, and any illustrations. Manuscript Contents Each manuscript must include the following: Illustrations Title page including (1) title of the article, (2) author names (with highest academic degrees) and affiliations (including titles, departments, and name and location of institutions of primary employment), and (3) any acknowledgments credits, or disclaimers. Abstract of no more than 50 words and up to 5 key words that describe the contents of the article like those that appear in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) or the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Clear indication of the placement of all tables and figures in text. Signed copyright transfer form or U.S. Government Work form (attached). Completed article submission form for each contributor (attached). Written permission for any borrowed text, tables, or figures. Figures should be created using electronic software (i.e., Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw and Photoshop). Please save files in both the application in which they were created (i.e., Microsoft Word) and as either EPS or Tiff files. Use computer-generated lettering. Do not use screens, color, shading, or fine lines. In lieu of original drawings and other material, a sharp, glossy, black-and-white photographic print between 5" x 7 and 8" x 10" is acceptable.
3 Illustrations, con't. Tables Each figure should have a label on the back indicating the number of the figure, the names of the authors, and the top of the figure. Do not write on the back of figures, mount them on cardboard, or scratch or mar them using paper clips. Do not bend figures. Cite each figure in the text in consecutive order. If a figure has been previously published, in part or in total, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce or adapt the material. Supply a caption for each figure, typed double-spaced on a separate sheet from the artwork. Captions should include the figure title, explanatory statements, notes, or keys; and source and permission lines. Provide a camera-ready copy and a separate electronic file for each piece of artwork. Do not embed art in your text file. Tables should be on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Number tables consecutively and supply a brief title for each. Include explanatory footnotes for all nonstandard abbreviations. Cite each table in the text in consecutive order. If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and acknowledge fully. Permissions Authors are responsible for obtaining signed letters from copyright holders granting permission to reprint material being borrowed or adapted from other sources, including previously published material of your own. Authors must obtain written permission for the following material. This includes any written material that has not been created and submitted to LWW for a specific publication (including forms, checklists, cartoons, text, tables, figures, exhibits, glossaries, and pamphlets); concepts, theories, or formulas used exclusively in a chapter or section; direct quotes from a book or journal that are more than 30% of a printed page; and all excerpts from newspapers or other short articles. Without written permission from the copyright holder, these items may not be used. References References must be cited in text and styled in the reference list according to The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Ed., copyright 1993, University of Chicago Press, with the following exceptions: They must be numbered consecutively in the order they are cited. Reference numbers may be used more than once throughout an article. Page numbers should appear with the text citation following a specific quote.
