8 B-C Latin Readers Series Editor: Ronnie Ancona, Hunter College and CUNY Graduate Center These readers, written by experts in the field, provide well-annotated Latin selections to be used as authoritative introductions to Latin authors, genres, or topics for intermediate/advanced college Latin students. They each contain approximately 600 lines of Latin, making them ideal to use in combination or as a shake-it-up addition to a time-tested syllabus. See reviews of BC Latin Readers from Bryn Mawr Classical Review, Classical Outlook, and more at A Suetonius Reader Selections from the Lives of the Caesars and the Life of Horace Josiah Osgood xxxix pp., 7 illustrations & 1 map (2011) 5 x 7¾ Paperback ISBN $19.00 As the coda to his depiction of Julius Caesar s assassination, Suetonius notes that when the corpse was being carried away in a litter, one arm drooped into view (dependente brachio; Iul. 82.3). The focus on this one limp arm as Caesar departs the stage of history indelibly marks the pathos of the scene. The detail is also typical of Suetonius biographical style: understated and concise, without authorial comment. His methods are subtle, his vocabulary often technical, his style businesslike. Hence he is regularly mined for information but too rarely read in Latin, much less taught at the undergraduate level. The popular appeal of Suetonius s Lives of the Caesars is obvious. Who would not thrill reading about the great Julius Caesar s delight in the Senate s bestowal of the right to wear a laurel wreath on all occasions because it covered his baldness? Or that the Divine Augustus had rotten teeth and wore special platform shoes to make himself look taller? Suetonius, however, has not always been as enthusiastically received among historians, who sometimes overlook that he intended his work as biography, not history, or that he patently aimed for prose that was not literary, but instead unadorned, clear, and concise. Such qualities of prose, however, happily make his Latin enjoyable both to teach and to read. His Caesars is a landmark in the history of biographical writing and remains a key source for the history of Rome, its transition from Republic to Empire, and contemporary efforts to come to terms with individual destiny. Features 527 lines selected from each of the Lives of the Caesars and the entire Life of Horace: Julius Caesar ; Augustus 78 and 33; Tiberius 40 44, 60, and 62.2; Caligula 19, 55, and 45 46; Claudius 41 42; Nero 20 21; Galba 2 3; Otho 2 3; Vitellius 13; Vespasian 21 22; Titus 8.3 4; Domitian 12 and 18; Life of Horace Introduction to Suetonius s life, genre, method, style, and achievement Grammatical and historical notes at the back Complete vocabulary Praise for A Suetonius Reader That tradition can (and should) now change, however, because Josiah Osgood s Suetonius Reader part of the Bolchazy-Carducci Latin Readers series admirably brings Suetonius into the corpus of Latin prose authors teachable to intermediate Latin students.... As if in imitation of Suetonius himself, Osgood is unintrusive as a commentator, efficient in his selection of information, and deft in his manner of characterization. 10 Forthcoming in 2019 A Text to Inspire Interdisciplinary Learning The Latin of Science Marcelo Epstein and Ruth Spivak They Said It First The Wisdom of the Ancient Greeks and Romans Kenneth F. Kitchell, Jr. (forthcoming, 2019), ISBN (forthcoming, 2019), ISBN This unique text provides a firsthand experience of what was for centuries the universal language of science Latin. A historical survey sets the context for Latin selections from nineteen authors who wrote in Latin and three whose works were translated into Latin. The anthology presents Latin readings that cover eight subjects from the general knowledge selections of thinkers like Pliny the Elder and Isidore of Seville to writings on chemistry by Georgius Agricola and Andreas Libavius. A brief essay introduces each author while vocabulary, syntax, and contextual notes facilitate reading the Latin passages. Features Authors: Agricola, Alberti, Alhazen, Bacon, Copernicus, de Soto, Euclid, Faventinus, Galvani, Harvey, Isidore of Seville, Kepler, Leibniz, Libavius, Maimonides, Newton, Oresme, Pliny the Elder, Seneca, and Vitruvius Subject areas: Architecture and Engineering, Astronomy and Rational Mechanics, Chemistry, Economics, General Knowledge, Mathematics, Medicine, and Optics Historical survey and essays for each author Vocabulary, syntax, and context notes Three appendices: The Pronunciation of Latin, A Compendium of Latin Grammar, and a Latin Glossary A New Twist on Ancient Sayings They Said It First provides a unique twist on quotation collections, pairing ancient Greek and Roman sayings with their modern counterparts. The likes of Mark Twain and W. E. B. DuBois may have eloquently expressed eternal truths and pithy witticisms but frequently, Homer or Seneca the Younger got there first. This text works well as both a reference and an entertaining read. Quotes are arranged thematically, so finding the perfect sayings to suit any occasion is simple and straightforward. Features such as an ancient Greek pronunciation guide make this work accessible to a wide audience, while the breadth of Latin and Greek quotations will appeal to teachers and students of classics. Briggs, Jr.; Introduction by Michele Valerie Ronnick xiv pp., 5 illustrations (2019), ISBN Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers is pleased to bring this pioneering text back in print. When published in 1881, William S. Scarborough s First Lessons in Greek was just as much a political broadside as an introductory textbook determined to put to rest the idea that blacks could not grasp Greek syntax. We all owe a debt of thanks to Michele Valerie Ronnick for bringing this exquisitely rare volume, crucial in the intellectual and civil rights history of America, back to the light of day. T. Corey Brennan, Department of Classics, Rutgers University It is not only an honor but a delight for me to join in celebrating the work of William S. Scarborough, a true pioneer in promoting the study of Hellenism in troubled times that sadly remain troubled even today. The world owes him a permanent place in the history of humanistic ventures. Gregory Nagy, Francis Jones Professor of Classical Greek Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature, Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University William Sanders Scarborough is a towering figure in the history of American education. To see his First Lessons in Greek is like entering his classroom where he used the newfangled blackboard and so recovering a moment in America s ascent to justice through education.
