2 Bookbinding and Paper Arts Course Description: Learn how to make your own sketch books, journals, photo albums and scrapbooks! This course will cover a variety of ways to construct books. You will spend the first six weeks making mini books with various binding and construction techniques, as well as creating decorative papers (paste paper, paper marbling and paper dying techniques). The last two weeks you will make a larger book in one of the styles explored at the beginning of the class. You will be able to use the various papers that you have created in your final project. Final projects will also allow students to explore more complex versions of previous binding techniques, add pockets and envelopes to their books, or to create a hardcover book. 2. Learning Objectives and Outcomes Learning Objectives and Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student will be familiar with the following aspects of book making and paper arts 1. Understanding and proper use of various book binding materials including binding thread, needles, awls, book board, wheat paste, canvas and a variety papers 2. Knowing how to make three different kinds of folded books: the accordion book, explosion book and tab book 3. Decorating paper through marbling, dying, and paste paper 4. Knowing how to make Japanese stab-binding books. 5. Knowing how to make a Coptic book 6. Knowing how to make a star book. 7. Combining different binding elements in one book. 8. Using recycled materials, combining a variety of papers, adding pockets and
3 envelopes to books. 9. Covering books and creating hard cover books. 3. Learning activities / Project Sheets: Concerning the projects: Students will be provided will all materials for the first class. Students must bring materials to class the following weeks, or they will not be able to complete projects. Research will be provided by the tutor for each of the smaller projects (covered the first six weeks) but student are responsible for images and ideas relating to the final projects (covered the last two weeks). Each lesson will include demonstrations by the tutor along with guided practice and independent work. During each class we will learn a new construction technique by making a small book. The last two classes will consist of creating a larger finished piece utilizing and combining the various techniques we have covered. During the first lesson three techniques will be covered. Don t be intimidated! Folded paper books take less time to create than books that involve sewing. PROJECT 1: Folded books Students will be familiar with bookbinding materials and understand the course syllabus Students will know how to create and accordion style book. Students will be able to create a tab book. Students will learn the folds for an explosion book. The tutor will show the students a variety of hand bound books and provide them with a series of images of the various kind of books that we will cover. The tutor will begin by reviewing the syllabus and explaining various materials and their uses. The tutor will show the students a variety of hand-bound books and provide them with a series of images of the various book styles that we will cover. Using pre-cut papers the tutor will demonstrate how to create an accordion book as students follow along. Tutor will show the basic folds and construction techniques for a tab book. Students will create a tab book choosing their own paper and colors, and cutting the paper to size. Tutor will show students the basic fold for an explosion book. Tutor will also demonstrate how to use paper to cover card for a heavier more durable cover. Using pre-cut paper, students will create an explosion book. Advanced students may move on to creating a book which combines folding and sewing.
4 Paper and glue will be provided. It will be helpful to have a pencil and a small ruler. Student will create three different kinds of folded books and have a basic understanding of the book binding process. PROJECT 2: Decorative Papers Students will learn about the history of paper and decorative papers Students will know how to create wheat paste and how to use it to create paste paper. Students will know how to marble paper and will experiment with various paper marbling patterns. Students will use various natural and synthetic materials to dye paper. The tutor will show the students how various decorative techniques have been used throughout history and in various cultures. Tutor will show several examples of each technique. The tutor will discuss the use of decorative paper throughout time and around the world. The tutor will explain the process of making wheat paste and demonstrate how to make past paper. Students will practice making various patterns with paste paper. The tutor will demonstrate paper marbling and show students how to make a variety of traditional marbling patterns. Students will practice marbling paper and experiment to invent their own patterns and designs. The tutor will demonstrate paper dyeing with a variety of material including water color paints and tea leaves. Students will dye their own papers, combining different kinds of dyes and experimenting with a variety of techniques. After students have experienced all three techniques there will be time to experiment more with one or two techniques, or students will be able to combine a variety of techniques. Dyes, paint and paste will be provided. Students should a bring at least thirty sheets of heavy weight water absorbent paper. Watercolor paper is ideal, however a variety of papers, including recycled papers can be used. Students are encouraged to bring a wide range of different kinds of materials. Student will create a wide range of decorative papers to be used in later projects.
5 PROJECT 3: Japanese Stab-binding Students will be familiar with the history of Japanese bookbinding Students will know how to create evenly space needle holes, use awls, clips, needles and thread. Students will be able to create books three kinds of traditional stab-binding stitches. The tutor will show the students a variety of stab bound books and images of stab bound books. The tutor will demonstrate measuring and how to use clips and an awl to create evenly spaced needle holes. Students will cut paper to size and create needle holes. Students may use paper created in the previous class as a cover for their book. Students will follow step by step instructions and sew their book together as the tutor demonstrates. The tutor will demonstrate two more techniques as students follow along. Advanced students will have time to learn a forth stitch. Paper(preferably pre-cut students will be notified of the needed size the week before), clips, awl, needle, thread and cutting board. It will be helpful to have a pencil and a small ruler. Student will create three different small stab bound books and know three different traditional Japanese stitches. PROJECT 4: Coptic Books Students will be familiar with the history of Coptic bookbinding Students will know what a folio is and know various techniques for binding together folios. Students will experiment with various kinds of tabs and fasteners. Students will be able to bind folios together and connect them to a cover. The tutor will show the students a variety of examples of Coptic books and images of Coptic books.
6 The tutor will explain the terms associated with classical book and the names for the different parts of a book. Students will carefully measure to form at least three folios with papers of the same size. The tutor will deamonstrate creating needles holes and binding together individual folios. Students will bind each folio. The tutor wit demonstrate connecting folios to the cover. Students will connect folios to the cover. The tutor will demonstrate adding decorative tabs. Students will create a book using decorative tabs. Paper (preferably pre-cut students will be notified of the needed size the week before), clips, awl, needle, thread and cutting board. Ribbon or cord for tabs. Material for a cover such as card covered with decorative paper, leather, felt or canvas. Examples of cover material will be discussed the week before. It will be helpful to have a pencil and a small ruler. Students will create two small Coptic bound books and know how to create folios and stich them together with or without tabs. PROJECT 5: Star Book Students will be familiar with a variety of contemporary book forms. Students will know how to create depth and three dimensions in books. Students will be able to create a star book. The tutor will show the students images of variety contemporary book forms. Students will have a concept for the theme of their book. Students will bring research images, photo and/or magazine clippings related to that theme. Students will view a variety of contemporary book forms. Students will discuss the meaning of the word book and create their own definition of what a book is. The tutor will show students a star book and explain the planning a preparation that it takes to make. Student will plan their star book, cut pages to size and add and cut out window to make their book three dimensional. The tutor will demonstrate how to attach multiple layers of paper. Students will attach layers of paper. Students will decorate heavy weight paper, card or book board to create a cover for their book. Student will add ribbons or string to close their book.. scissors, coloring pencils or pens (optional), glue stick, cord or ribbon. Material for book cover (heavy weight paper, card or book board). It will be helpful to have a pencil and a small ruler.
7 Student will create a star book. PROJECT 6: Hard Covers Students will know how to make hard cover from card, book board and a variety of recycled materials Students will know how to cover hard covers with a variety of different materials. Students will be able to attach folios to a hard cover. The tutor will show the students a variety of hard cover books. The tutor will demonstrate how to create hard covers from a variety of materials. Students will create cover and cover them with fabric, paper or recycled materials of their choice. Students will create a series of folios. Students will attach folios to their hard cover. Student will use decorative end papers to finish the book. Advanced students will have time to create a book case. Paper, clips, awl, needle, thread and cutting board. It will be helpful to have a pencil and a small ruler. Book board or card. Fabric, canvas, decorative paper or other recycled materials to cover the book. Student will create a hard cover book. PROJECT 3: Final Project Students will combine a variety of different binding techniques in one book Students will experiment with materials they have not used such as recycled materials, new kinds of paper, old books, and fabric Students will create books that are interactive through adding envelopes, pocket or secret compartments. Students should bring images that inspire them. Students should also bring in all the books they have previously created.
8 Students should come into class with a concept of the kind of book they want to create. The book should have experimental elements, such as combining folding and stiching, adding envelopes or pockets, combining a variety of materials, using unusual materials or recycled materials. The form of the book should relate to its content. Each student will class will present their idea to the whole class. The class will provide feedback and further inspiration. The tutor will give suggests as to how to most efficiently complete the project. Students will have time to work with the assistance of the tutor. At the end of the last class students will have group critique in which they discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their final piece and talk about what they have learned in the class. Materials for the final project depend on what kind of book the student chooses to make. Student will create a unique book based on their own concepts and inspiration Duration: 2 weeks
