U T S C H O O L OF P U B L I C H E A L T H L I B R A R Y UTSPH Library The mission of The University of Texas School of Public Health Library is to provide the best service possible and ensure that your information needs are fully met. Library Announcements Announcements can be found in the middle of the UTSPH Library homepage. We ll let you know when we ve added new resources, made changes in library hours, or posted new library classes. For example: In our announcements, you will see that we have a new research discovery tool Find It Fast. Give it a try! Just go to: Have a question? Need help? There are 4 ways to get in touch with a librarian: In person: Monday Friday 8 am to 5 pm Ask a Librarian: Click the Ask a Librarian button on the Library homepage (or go to libanswers) Text us: On the phone: Call or Location and Parking The library is located on the first floor of the Reuel A. Stallones (RAS) building at the corner of Pressler and Bertner. Parking is available on the Pressler side of the building. The rates are currently: $1 for the first hour up to $11 for the day. The first 15 minutes are FREE. Rev. Aug-13
Library Homepage Overview You can find the UTSPH Library on the UTSPH home page under Current Students as well as under Quicklinks at the bottom of the School page. Once you get to the Library page, you ll find that the right side buttons are located only on the homepage whereas left menu bar items are on every library page. Find it Fast! We know everyone uses Google and Google Scholar. But what if we can offer you something similar that points ONLY to resources we have in the Library to help you get started with your research? That s exactly Find it Fast does! There will be a search box on the Library home page that goes to: Find it Fast is designed to search in titles, tables of contents, and abstracts all of our ebooks and ejournals. It s not meant to be the be-all end-all research tool that our specialized research databases are. But it will surely move you on the right path to completing your research. It even has options to exclude certain types of publications (such as newspaper articles) or limit to specific types of content. In this example, the search was limited to book chapters and books. Not everything is online, of course. Incorporated into Find it Fast is the information for our print collection. We think you will find this every bit as easy to use as Google and you ll get results that will allow you read the article or book chapter with just the click of a mouse! Databases A-Z & By Subject While we love Find it Fast, it is not necessarily suitable for those very in-depth research papers and projects. Take a look at our Frequently Used resources to start research. We probably should name these Highly Recommended instead as these are the best databases to begin any in-depth research project. We also have resources broken up into subject categories as well for when you need more specialized information. Additionally you can access all of our resources alphabetically by clicking on All Databases: A-Z. 2
UTSPH Library Resources Borrowing Privileges Houston students: Your UTHSC-H ID badge is your library card but we need to input your information into our system before you can borrow books. Please fill out and return our patron information form. Regional Campuses students: We will set up a record for you if you want to borrow books from the SPH Library. Your A number will be used to identify you in the system. Each semester: At the beginning of each semester, you will be asked to show proof of enrollment in SPH. You can use your paid fee statement from myuth. Not registered for classes? You cannot borrow books from the SPH Library but you are welcome to use the SPH Library and library resources in-person. THSLC Member Libraries The UTSPH Library is a member of the Texas Health Science Libraries Consortium (THSLC). There are four other members: Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library (TMC Library) UT School of Dentistry Library UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Research Medical Library UT Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB) Moody Medical Library You may use your ID card to borrow books at any of these other libraries. Loan Periods Books may be checked out for 30 days (renew once). Theses may be checked out for 30 days (renew once). Bound journals may be checked out for 30 days (renew once). Current journals may be checked out for 3 days (renew once). Course reserves may be checked out for 3 hours (they must be used in the Library). Permanent reserves may be checked out for 1 day or 3 days, depending on the item. Access to Online Resources Online resources are open to all walk-in visitors as well as current UTSPH students, staff, and faculty. To access an online resource from home, an office that is not located on the Houston SPH campus, or from a regional campus, you will need an active UTHSC-H account. This is the same account as your UTHSC-H Blackboard and account. While most of our ejournals and databases are accessible directly from SPH, we also link to databases and ejournals provided by the TMC Library. Use your Blackboard (i.e. UTHSC-H) username and password to login. 3
Renewing Items You can renew your books by going to your library record in the online catalog. To view your record: 1. From the Library s homepage, click on Online Catalog. 2. Click the Renew Items tab. 3. Houston students: Enter your barcode number (which is located on the back of your ID, below the barcode) and your last name. Regional campuses students: Use your A number 4. Check the box(es) next to the items to be renewed. 5. Click Request Renewal. Is your phone number or address incorrect? You can view it under Renew Items as well. Please call the circulation desk at (713) if you need to make any corrections. Borrowing Materials Directly from Other Libraries (All SPH students) To borrow materials directly from other libraries (i.e. in person), you have 2 options. TexShare card: You can use the TexShare card to borrow books directly from participating Texas academic and public libraries. Ask at the UTSPH circulation desk for a card. (Regional campuses students: Please call or Angel Hooper for a TexShare card.) For more information, visit: Use your UTSPH ID card to borrow books from the University of Houston (Main Campus) and Rice University. Regional campus students: You may also have borrowing privileges from the library of your host institution. Check with them to find out what you need to do borrow books. Regional Campus Students: Request books be sent to you from SPH If there is a book at the SPH Library that you need or an article that is in print only in Houston, you can request the item through ILLiad (our Interlibrary loan system; you ll need to create an account). Book/Article Request button Complete the form, being sure to indicate on which campus you are located. There is no charge for this service. We will not copy textbook chapters or send course textbooks. Articles will be delivered electronically to your ILLiad account. Books will be sent to your regional campus office. 4
Request items through Interlibrary Loan (All SPH students) Can t find an article that you need? Use our Interlibrary loan service to get what you need! Click on the link to Submit an Interlibrary Loan Request. After you login to ILLiad (our Interlibrary loan system; you ll need to create an account), click the appropriate button to make your request. Note: When setting up your ILLiad account, use an easy-to-remember username and password. Your password should not be the same as your UTHSC-H password as that password changes every 90 days. Note: Even though the button says Request a Photocopy, you will actually receive an electronic copy of the article you want. If you request a book, however, you will get a print book. Book chapters can be delivered electronically, though. Please limit your requests a maximum of 5 per day. Also, make certain you really need what you request. While we do not charge you, many libraries do charge us up to $20 per article; therefore, we are limiting students to 25 requests per semester. Did you search an online database and used the linking tool to check for the full text of the article, only to discover it couldn t be found? Follow Step 2 - Search the Library Catalog to make certain the journal isn t available in one of the Houston-area THSLC libraries. If it is and you are in Houston, consider retrieving the item yourself (not a necessity but the ILL department gets really busy so you would be doing us a big favor!). Of course, if the item is in Galveston (UTMB), the SPH Library will get it for you; no need to make a road trip. Still no luck? Click on Step 3: Submit an Interlibrary Loan Request. After you login to ILLiad, the article search system will automatically fill in the form for you! Articles are delivered electronically to your ILLiad account. You will receive an to let you know when the request has been filled. 5
Print Resources Periodicals: Journals, Newspapers and magazines Newspapers, magazines, and current journals are located on the first floor in the current periodicals room, allowing patrons to browse the latest issues in public health. Once bound, the journals are moved to the second floor. Whether current or bound, the journals are in alphabetical order for your convenience. Healthy Living Magazines Take a brain break and browse our healthy living magazines in the current periodicals room. These journals for the average consumer cover health, fitness, beauty, wellness, and advice, based on the knowledge of therapists and scientific clinical researchers. Who knows, you might find your next research topic there! Books Books are shelved in one of four locations: new book shelf, book stacks, reference, and reserves. The online catalog will indicate the location. These areas are shown on the map shown on page 8. Reserves (Houston students) Course Reserves Each semester textbooks and other required readings are placed on reserve. These items may be used only in the library for 3 hours. From the Library homepage, click on Course Textbooks for a list of required textbooks or Course Reserves to search for required by you professor. Permanent Reserves Items on permanent reserve include books on writing grants and scientific articles, and references on creating bibliographies. These items may be checked out for 1 or 3 day periods, depending on the item. Theses & Dissertations Bound in orange, theses and dissertations are available on the first floor of the library. All theses and dissertations are included in the Online Catalog. Full text electronic access to SPH dissertations from 1997 to present and electronic access to theses from 2008 to present is also provided through Databases A-Z: Digital Dissertations. Photocopying and Printing The library has two networked photocopier/printers located on the first floor. The printer/copiers do not accept money, only copy cards. The SPH Library has a copy card dispenser where you may purchase a reusable blank copy card for $1.00. Once you have a blank card, you add money as needed for copies. Photocopies are 8 cents per side for B&W and 20 cents per side for color. Neither the library nor the copy card machine give change. If you have a large bill, the machine will put all of this onto the card. Use the Quick Print PC between the copier/printers to print slide handouts or small jobs! 6
RefWorks RefWorks is a bibliographic manager for citations. It allows you to create your own personal database of references by importing them from various databases. You can then use these citations in your paper, automatically format the paper, or create a separate bibliography in seconds. RefWorks handouts are available from the Library homepage under Guides to Using Library Resources. Health Data The Library s Health Data Library links to a multitude of statistical resources for Texas as well as federal and international data. Information covered includes disease prevalence, environmental and occupational health, sociodemographic data, risk behaviors, education, employment and labor, and more. The link to the Health Data Library can be found on the left menu bar from any of the Library s web pages. CHARTing Health Information for Texas Located within our Health Data Library, this website provides a comprehensive collection of links to publicly accessible sources of data for the state of Texas from reliable and authoritative providers of information. Resources are placed in categories such as: Cause of Illness or Death, Maternal & Child Health, Sociodemographic & Community Characteristics, and Environmental & Occupational Health. Other helpful information includes: Common Data Problems, Glossary of Terms, and Rates & Formulas. A link to it can be found on the Library s homepage. Wireless Connections Wireless access is available throughout both the RAS and UCT buildings. You have two options for connecting: the guest wireless network which does not require configuration and gives you just basic internet connectivity; the protected wireless network which requires a username and password to login. (It s the same as your UTHSC-H username and password). The protected wireless allows for the most connectivity while in the building, but does require configuration. An IT Services staff member can assist with the configuration of your laptop. IT Services is located in the basement of the RAS building. Please visit the SPH IT Services website, for additional information about which connectivity is best for you. 7
