2 5. (213th AERO SQUADRON). "History of the 213th Aero Squadron." Photocopy of 7 page typed history. With photocopies of letters between the C.O., John A. Hambleton and pilot Roland Richardson. The first photocopied letter from Hambleton to Roland Richardson is dated February 25th, 1920, and concerns his desire to have a full history of the Squadron published and enlisting Richardson's assistance. Hambleton has included this seven page "official history of the Squadron, which will form the basis from which our book could be prepared." This is followed by a 1 1/2 page photocopied typed letter from Roland Richardson to Hambleton dated March 1, 1920, expressing his complete enthsiasm with the project and throwing out the names of a few pilots whom he felt should be able to contribute interesting experiences. The next 1 page photocopied letter is from Richardson to Hambleton dated five years later, July 25, 1925, discussing meeting with several Squadron members, his own marriage and two children and inquiring after the Squadron history. This is followed by a photocopy of Hambleton's 1 page reply dated two days later on the 27th. Hambleton expresses disappointment that his "circular" he sent to Squadron members elicited only fourteen replies so he dropped the project. These are followed by the 7 page "History of the 213th Aero Squadron" with the first 6 pages covering "From December 1, 1917 to November 11, 1916' and the final page "From November 12th, 1918 to April 20th, 1919." The War Diary and Photographs of a Flying Corps Pilot. London: William Heinemann Ltd., (1933), octavo, black cloth, in pictorial dust jacket. (x), 166pp. First Edition. This book, it's author, and the photographs it contains have been the subject of much controversy since their first publication. The manuscript, which included numerous spectacular shots of aerial combat, was presented to the publisher by a Mrs Gladys Cockburn-Lange, who claimed to be the widow of the British pilot author whose diary it was. The photos weren't definitively debunked until 1984 when archivists at the Smithsonian realized that "Mrs Gladys Cockburn-Lange" was actually Betty Archer, the wife of Wesley David Archer, a model maker in the film industry. Archer had created models of all the aircraft and then had superimposed images of the planes onto aerial backgrounds. Although the photographs were eventually exposed as a hoax, Archer did in fact fly and fight in the war, being wounded while with 40 Squadron, so it would seem safe to assume that some of his experiences appear in the written text - which is well worth reading. Jacket, which is not price clipped, is very fine, book is nearly as new. Included are two typed letters, signed, from "Gladys M. Cockburn-Lange" to Mr. Ferrell who is inquiring after purchase and reproduction costs of the photographs. "The photographs you saw in the Museum of Science form part of a collection of fifty-seven photographs taken from a combat aeroplane during the World War. These photographs are $10.00 each, but there is a limited edition of albums containing the entire collection, prints size 5 1/2" x 7", which can be obtained for $ " One letter dated Nov 11th, 1931 and the other March 29th, Finally, there is an original Archer created photograph, 7" x 7 3/4", depicting a dogfight between three German planes and two British aircraft. Extrensively illustrated in black and white and color. Amid the ongoing quest for aerial superiority during World War I, the late spring of 1917 saw two competing attempts to refine proven designs. The Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5a incorporated improvements to the original SE 5 airframe along with 50 more horsepower to produce a fast, reliable ace-maker. The Albatros D V, a sleeker development of the deadly D III of 'Bloody April' notoriety, proved to be more disappointing as it suffered a rash of lower wing failures. Nevertheless, Albatrosen remained the most numerically important fighters available when the Germans launched their final offensive on March Despite its shortcomings, German tactics and skill made the Albatros D V a dangerous foe that SE 5a pilots dismissed at their peril. This title tells the story of the design and development of these two fighters and concludes with their dramatic fights in the last year of World War I. New. (24139) $ [HALLAM, Theodore Douglas]. (Stroud): Fonthill, (2014), octavo, black boards in pictorial dust jacket. (161)pp. First Edition. Profusely illustrated with photographs. Those with any interest in the First World War will have have heard of the planes most associated with that conflict - the legendary Sopwith Camel and Royal Aircraft Factory s S.E.5a, which are often called the "Spitfire" and "Hurricane" of the Great War. Aviation enthusiasts might even know of the Camel's predecessors, the Sopwith Pup or the Triplane. But what of the many other planes that saw active service in the war? This is the story of those armed airplanes whose names few people can recall, the Forgotten Fighters of the First World War, including the pusher gunbuses of the early war years, the strange pulpit design of the B.E.9, the desperate conversions of reconnaissance machines that were never intended to be armed, and those which were thought too tricky for the average pilot to handle. It is also the story of the brave men who flew these machines, fighting, and too often dying, for a cause they believed in. Some of these airplanes only served in small numbers and others in areas away from the main battle on the Western Front, but all made a vital contribution to the winning of the war. And these lost but iconic fighter aircraft, and the brave young men who flew them, deserve to be remembered just as much as the more famous aces in their legendary machines. This is their story. New. Robert Little's forty-seven victories with the Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Air Force, nor the fact that he earned a chestful of medals before his death at the tragically young age of twenty-two in a solo night-chase after a bomber in May He was also ranked eighth overall 'Ace' of all British Commonwealth pilots in the Great War. Yet despite this great, international achievement, he remains little-known beyond Australia. Mike Rosel set out with the aim of remedying the situation in a biographical history of supreme quality. A fine marksman who closed to point-blank range, Little enjoyed hunting alone. Courageous beyond common sense, he pushed fragile aircraft and his phenomenal luck to the limit. One remarkable occasion saw him fight solo against 11 Germans in a characteristic showdown of grit and determination tempered perhaps by a certain degree of recklessness. Flying a Sopwith Triplane emblazoned with his son s nickname, Blymp, he became famous in 1917, nicknamed Rikki after the lethal cobra-killing mongoose in Kipling s Jungle Tales. By July 1917 he had claimed fourteen aircraft. By the time of his death in May 1918, he had attained DSO and Bar, DSC and Bar, the French Croix de Guerre, and forty-seven aerial victories. Ira Jones biography of Britain s top scoring ace of World War I has become the subject of some controversy over the last few years, most notably as it is the source of the claim of 73 kills for Mannock, thereby making him the number one scoring Allied Ace of the war. When Gerald Constable Maxwell was flying as a fighter pilot in World War I, his brother Michael was born. Both went on to have distinguished flying careers in World War II. This is the story of both men and how their paths crossed during the second conflict. Gerald served with distinction with 56 Squadron, one of the crack fighter units of WWI in France. Upon his return to England he became Chief Flying Instructor of No. 1 Fighter and Gunnery School at Turnberry. In World War II he served as Station Commander at RAF Ford, a night Fighter station near Arundel, one of the most efficient and happy stations in 11 Group. Michael followed in his brother s footsteps and joined 56 Squadron in April 1940 to fly the Hawker Hurricane. During May the squadron was moved to France to assist the fast retreating British and French forces as the Germans rapidly advanced. On 27 May, he was shot down whilst attacking ten Heinkel 111s on their way to bomb Dunkirk. Fortunately his first contacts upon landing by parachute were French and he managed to find his way to Ostend where he boarded a trawler and crossed the Channel back to Deal. 56 Squadron had by now returned to their English base at North Weald from where they were flying patrols over the French coast and escorting RAF bombers raiding the German positions. On 8 June, whilst trying to reach returning Blenheims over Le Treport, the Hurricanes were bounced by Bf 109s and again Michael was hit, wounding him in the leg and foot, fortunately he eventually managed a crash landing back at North Weald. During the height of the Battle of Britain Michael was again forced to make a crash landing near Herne Bay which he was lucky to survive as his Hurricane had disintegrated around him. In the autumn of 1941 Michael was posted to 604 Nightfighter Squadron, led by the legendary Cat s Eyes Cunningham flying Beaufighters and eventually Mosquitos. He was eventually to Command the squadron whose tally of enemy aircraft shot down when he left it had reached 100. This remarkable story includes firsthand combat accounts from both Michael and Gerald and the author has had access to the Constable Maxwell s family records. With the advent of faster and more agile single-seaters, the Allies and their adversaries raced to outdo each other in the creation of genuinely effective fighters with fixed forward-firing machine gun armament. It was not until 1917 that the British developed a truly effective interrupter gear, which paved the way for excellent single seaters such as the Sopwith Triplane Camel and the RAF S.E.5., later joined by the Bristol F.2B - the war's best two-seat fighter. Signed and dated, "Oct 1918" by Tipton's mother, "from Mrs. Tipton." Accompanying the book is a typed letter, signed "Gwilym" from Gwilym Lewis to Jack Wales dated 30th May "You wrote me a splendid letter and were good enough to enclose the "Appreciation of 'tiny' Tipton". He really did have a magnetic personality which is almost unbelievable. This is so clearly reflected in my own letter and other letters written to his family at the time of his death. I am sure that somewhere along the line I must have myself received this book...unfortunately I failed to make the lunch with Harold Balfour..." Included is the five page holograph "Appreciation" which, although unsigned and in a rough draft form with cross-outs and corrections, is obviously the tribute written by Jack Wales. Also included is a typed letter, signed "Kelly" from Kelly Wills dated 23 Jan to Jack Wales. "The item in Kilduff's column was a bit misleading. I am not planning a complete history of No. 4 Sqn. I became interested in No. 40 Squadron while researching the Career of Adolf von Tutschek...Apparently Tutschek scrapped more than a little bit with the 1917 members of the No. 40 Sqn. and I am primarily interested in that portion of the unit's history. I have a copy of the Lorraine book but I have never heard of the Tipton book which sounds fascinating...i would like to borrow, or buy...or trade for the Tipton book...i would like a copy of the text relevant to No 40 Sqn. in any form if you do not wish to part with the book..." Pfalz Scout Aces of World War I. (Oxford): Osprey, (2006), quarto, pictorial heavy paper wrappers. 96pp. First Edition. Extensively illustrated. The Pfalz Flugzeug Werke, located at Speyer am Rhein in Bavaria, was the third in the great triumvirate (along with Fokker and Albatros) of German fighter manufacturers in the Great War. When World War I broke out in 1914, Pfalz initially produced copies of the Morane-Saulnier parasol monoplanes for the German air service. With the advent of the famed Fokker Eindeckers with their synchronized machine guns, Pfalz entered the fighter market with the Pfalz E.I and its successors, all monoplanes which were similarly armed.

22 Though never as as numerous as the Albatros or Fokker designs, the D III/IIIa was flown in combat by many well-known aces: Werner Voss, Carl Degelow, Erich Löwenhardt, and the balloon buster Fritz von Röth, among others. This book examines the little-known aircraft flown by these incredible men. Very fine copy. (24142) $20.95 Foreword by Douglas Campbell 135. WHITEHOUSE, Arch and Milton Lancelot. Fighting Wings.
