Florida State Leadership Conference Karen W. Blount, State Director Florida and the Bahamas Karen Britt, State Youth Coordinator Paulette Bartlett, Dramatic Performance Competition Coordinator
February 6, 2016 Table of Contents I. Dramatic Performance Contest II. Listing of Performance Resources III. Performance Rubric IV. Participant Application
DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE CONTEST What is a Dramatic Performance? Dramatic performances are performances that include one person performances of declamations, monologues, soliloquies, one character plays, and poetic interpretations. These are all speech performances with a dramatic flair. No props are used, only the individual performance is judged. Who can participate? Zeta Archonettes and Amicettes. Each age group will have its own contest. The State of Florida s Dramatic Performance Competition will be for Zeta Archonettes and Amicettes and will be held at the Florida State Youth Conference on Saturday, February 6, The successful applicants (one Zeta Archonette and one Amicette) based on the quality of their distinctive performance may advance to the Regional level to represent the State of Florida. If there is a Regional competition, the youth will be informed. Rules in selection of your materials for the Dramatic Performance Contest: 1. The selection in this category must have been originally delivered as a speech by its author, a person in real life other than the present contestant (declamation), or the presentation must be from a published play (monologues, soliloquies, one character plays) or another acceptable source. If you have questions about your selection, please submit your questions to: Paulette Bartlett pvbartlett97@gmail.com The contestant will begin the presentation with a brief statement of introduction that describes the circumstances under which the speech was presented by the author. 3. The speech must be memorized. 4. The contestant must be able to interpret the meaning of the passage. Ease of gestures, emphasis, variety, and enunciation are the mechanics of speech to be observed. 5. Delivery style should be developed by the contestant, but it should fit the purpose of the Speech. Effective communication of ideas is of importance. 6. Time limit: 2-5 minutes, including a 30 second introduction. 3
TYPES OF DRAMATIC PERFORMANCES 1.Soliloquy A speech in which a character reveals his thoughts to the audience, but not to the other characters, by speaking to himself or herself. The idea is to give insight into the mind of the speaker and to express what he is thinking. Shakespearean dramas are good sources of soliloquies. 2. Monologue /One-Actor Play A speech, play, skit, or recitation that was originally written for one actor only or presents the words or thoughts of a single character. 3. Dramatic Monologue Using poetry or an excerpt from prose, a performer presents the emotions and expressions she feels when reading and performing the specific literary creation. No props are used. The performer s gestures and voice are the only tools used. 4. Declamations Declamations are the delivery of a speech or an excerpt from the speech written and delivered by another person. The performer must recreate the general feel of the original delivery without giving an impersonation of the original speaker. Declamations express strong feelings and generally protest, denounce, or condemn a situation or idea. 4
LISTING OF DRAMATIC PERFORMANCES RESOURCES Shakespeare s dramas monologues.org/women/ Speeches by Famous Women Famous Speeches Declamation Pieces Literature anthologies Poetry books. All of the above recommendations can be found in your public library, your school library and language arts classroom, on the internet (A few examples of websites have been provided above and are not intended as a suggestion of what to do, or how to do it. The links have been provided as an example of where to go and to give you an idea of what you will find), or from your advisor. 5
PERFORMANCE RUBRIC Points will be given for four (4) areas of the speaker s (participant s) performance. The rating will be assessed a score of 1 to 5, with five (5) being a perfect score. Maximum points: thirty-five (35). Participant must adhere to the 2-5 minute requirement. 1. Communication of Meaning: Does the speaker show an understanding of the selection? Does the speaker communicate the original speaker s message? 2. Spontaneity: Is the speaker physically and vocally free in the presentation? Does the speaker avoid stiffness and monotony? 3. Clarity: Does the speaker use gestures, movements and vocal variations to help communicate more effectively? 4. Audience Contact: Does the speaker make the audience aware that she is talking to them? Is the speaker aware of the audience? Total Score: 6
