E.D.Merrill, J.Arn.Arb. 19 (1938) ; H.P.Fuchs, Taxon 11 (1962) As Merrill stated, nearly all entries of Houttuyn's new species in Index Lewensis and Londinensis are to Houttuyn's "Handleiding tot de plant- en kruidkunde", an immediate reissue of the "Natuurlijke Historie", due to the fact that only the "Handleiding" was available in the Lew Library. There are possibly some differences in the dates of issues between the two series, and for nomenclature the 1st issue, viz the "Natuurlijke Historie" ought to be considered. Merrill listed the years of issue of the 14 volumes of Deel II; Fuchs took his dates from announcements in the "Leydse Courant", and found no discrepancy as to the years mentioned by Merrill, but was able to give more precise dates. 3 907 penhagen (Herb.Vahl), and Geneva (Herb.Burman), all Merrill's attempts to locate a Houttuyn herbarium have failed (i.e. p. 310)5 and Merrill concluded that in all probability Houttu,yn's actual types are no longer extant. The herbarium was sold in 1789 (see Puchs, I.e. p.47) and may have been incorporated in the collections of Van Royen, Burman, and others, with a single exception (in Copenhagen), the name Houttuyn was not found on herbarium sheets. It is supposed that the latter tore volumes of the Acta apart and announced papers for sale separately, apparently introducing the erroneous date 1787 for papers taken from either the 4th or the 6th volume. In contemporary species it is impossible, without flowers at hand, to identify most of the genera. Consequently generic identification of fossil material on the basis of fruits and/or leaves is usually dubious... Triplinerved leaves are by palaeontologists consistently referred to Uinnamomum, although in contemporary Lauraceae a dozen genera have species with such leaves, 'iriplinerved leaves are furthermore so common in other families that even the identifications as to family are doubtful... approached the problem of identification of leaves by means of studying cuticles and stomata. i'his approach should also be handled with care, as is proved by Aniba ridleyana i.iez, which has the Aniba type of stomata, but actually represents a species of Ocotea. She herself stresses, that in modern species of a single genus astonishing.*' the variation in stomata and cuticle is A.Aostermans, Lauraceae (1957) p.22.
