The volumes originally sold so rapidly that several other editions, some in octavo, were brought out, and even a French translation under the title "Recherches asiatiques". The 'verbatim' Calcutta edition was printed later and dated accordingly. I, 4 (1954) clxix it is mentioned that the Cryptogamie by Be"langer, Bory de St.Vincent & Montagne is usually quoted 1846, the year also given by Pritzel in his Thesaurus. From the reference in Brandes, it that 2 appears sheets and 8 uncoloured plates were already issued in or before Jan.1835! This proves also that the work was issued in parts. In his review of botanical literature of about 1840, Gri-

2 731 sebach noted that Part II, Cryptogamie, was completed. In total 4 fascicles had been issued at that time, the only ones ever published. The phanerogams consist of 15 plates without text. In 1928 the Botanical Museum at Berlin-Dahlem acquired a copy with 16 tab. containing 78 fig. The following plants are depicted on t.16: fig.74 Callostylis rigida, fig.75 Thelasis carinata,- fig.76 Spathoglottis plicata, fig.77 Aphyllorchis pallida, fig.78 Rhynchanthera paniculata. It is different for fasc (Filices), for which Danser accepted 1849, whereas De Wit (see Fl.Mai.Bull. n.5, 1949, ) found that Blume sent copies to the Ministry of the Interior on Aug.31, In Gersdorf's Repert. these fascicles are dated 1849; in v/iegmann's Archif even later, viz 1851, while it is stated that fasc were issued in the same year (the not disputed 1851). In the Allgem.Bibliogr.f.Deutschl fasc are reviewed in Febr., but dated 1849; fasc is reviewed in Dec B 1 u m e, C.L., Rumphia, etc. Add: cf. The review of Grisebach confirms the data in Bot.Zeit. (see Fl.Mai.Bull, n.14, 1959, 641), that the last parts of vol.2 were published in It states that the whole work was finished with vols 3 and 4 in It is included in Grisebach's literature list for 1850, but there is a special note (Grisebach, I.e.p.352) that although the title-page of

As Teyler's Library at Haarlem received the bill of vol.3 in January 1849, it must have been available at that time, but certainly not in 1843 as Dr H.C.D.de «/it suggested. Vol.1. Following the data given on the first page of each numbered fascicle of vol.1, I assumed that it was published in 24 In parts. Gersdorf 1852 I.e. it is said to have been issued in _25 parts, each of one sheet. As a matter of fact the volume runs to 25 sheets, the last one, however, does not have a heading like all the others, although p.384 (end of sheet n.24) has a line at the bottom as all the other fascicles have. As the date from fasc.21 onwards reads 1851 only, it does not make much difference. Vol.2. The Preface, and title-page of fasc.1, vol.2, are dated Beume'e (see Fl.Mal. I, 4, 1954, clxxii; discussed extensively in Fl.Mal.Bull, n.3, 1948, 69-70), after ample consideration, dated fasc.1-8, Feb.1856; nearly the same date, viz Feb.1, 1856, is given by Miquel in the Bot.Zeit. I.e. p In Gersdorf's Repert is given as date of issue for these fascicles, a date which cannot be accepted. One cannot deny that it sometimes looks as if Blume withheld his publications on intention from colleagues who were working on the same families! In the Allgem.Bibliographie I.e., fasc.1-8 and 9-12 are reviewed respectively in March and July 1856, confirming Miquel's dates (see also Fl.Mal. I, 4, 1954, clxxii). The last lot, pp (comprising fasc.13-16) are reviewed in April 1857, and dated 1857! They probably have appeared early in the year. The whole 2nd volume was reviewed in May 1857 in the Allgem.Bibliogr.f.Deutschl. It seems justified to date fasc as early 1857, probably March. 3 1 u m e, C.L., Collections des Orchide'es, etc Adds cf. The supposition expressed by R.Tournay (Bull.Soc.R.Bot. Belg.90, 1958, (see also PI.Mai.Bull, n.14, 1959, 642) that this volume was probably published in parts from 1858 till 1859, is confirmed, as in above-mentioned references it is stated that fasc.7-12, pp were published in 1859! Boissier, E., Diagnoses plantarum orientalium novarum. Add: cf. Fascicle 1 (1842) was issued in Some of the years of publication of the parts deviate from those published in Fl.Mal. I, 4 (1954) clxxiii. It is stated that the 1st fascicle was issued in 1843; fascicles 6-7 are dated both 1846, with a note that he (Grisebach) did not receive them before Cambessedes, J., V.Jacquemont, Voyage dans l'lndej. Fl.Mal. I, 4, 1954, clxxv) it was accepted that the publication date was 1844, as was mentioned in Pritzel also. Rickett supposed (cf. Fl.Mal.Bull, n.14, 1959, 642) that it was published in two instalments, respectively issued in 1843 and The paper by Mr Zain-ul-Abidin drew my attention to the fact that references to this work are found at least from 1839 onwards, e.g. in Endlicher, Genera Plantarum, and in Walper's Repertorium. Consultation of V/iegmann's Archif fur Naturgeschichte revealed that 6 botanical parts were published in 1835, 36 parts had appeared in 1840 (noted that publication was halfway), 41 in 1841, 49 in 1842, and by 1844 the whole botanical volume (it reads vol.5, but must read vol.4) was published. Evidently Nat.Gesch. 11 2, Sherborn & Woodward saw only the reference in Arch. and not those in the preceding special mention of the Atlas was made. volumes. No

In V/iegmann 1 s Archif Suppl.4 is listed with the literature of 1847, what is no proof, however. Correction: In the scheme published in Fl.Mal. As Breistroffer consulted all the French bibliographical journals which gave the precise dates, his scheme is accepted here with some slight alterations in the pages, evidently printing errors. According to Pritzel, Thes.Lit.Bot. 1872, originally 8 fascicles, each of 12 plates, were planned.
