6 Rosy Outlook This Minnesota show girl has a love for spectacle and sparkle. A costumer, dancer and plus size model, Deeva Rose has taken the Twin Cities by storm. Follow this Nudie Nubie Ultimate Reveal III winner as she strips her way into your heart. But be careful, this Deeva has thorns. What is your background before and apart from burlesque? Growing up in Central Minnesota I was a part of all the theatre and music programs I could get my hands on. I grew up dancing and singing along to all the classics, Sound of Music, Annie, Hair... I graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts. What are your thoughts on MnUps Magazine and what sets it apart from similar periodicals? I love MnUps Magazine. It s great to see a magazine that celebrates different body types, and empowered sexy women. and strip like the best of them. I hope that my audience can see me on stage and enjoy their own bodies more. How have things changed/ improved, or what lessons have you learned since you started? I ve learned a lot about self-love. It s hard to feel confident about yourself if you don t take time to love yourself. Loving yourself includes things like making time to rehearse, eating well, and keeping your house clean. I am a better performer/ person when I take time to have Deeva Time. What is a good story, about your business, from when you were just beginning? I love burlesque because any one can do it. All genders, races, sizes, and abilities can take their clothes off. I don t know if you ve noticed but I m plus size. I love defying traditional beauty standards and showing that big ladies (and gentlemen) can shake it When I finally convinced my mom to come to one of my shows my dad ended up joining her. Now they have been very supportive regarding burlesque but having your dad watch you strip can be a little awkward. Of course the emcee knew how nervous I was, so naturally she made an announcement about them being in the audience. I was going about the act and everything was great until I popped a pastie! Sorry Dad! 11

7 What keeps you going when it gets difficult? My burly family. I have acquired a great group of people who support me and help me keep going. There were many a show or late night sewing session that started with me crying on the phone to friend Is there an experience you ve had with one of your fans or students that you are most proud of? After the first Nudie Nubie show a woman came up to me and insisted I meet her friend. When she introduced me to her friend she described that she is deaf. This beautiful woman took the time to write out the nicest note. It really means a lot to me and I keep that note in my wallet with me everyday. Imogen Kelly and Dirty Martini What is the biggest thing you ve learned since starting your career? I can t say I ve learned anything terribly profound yet. Yes I ve learned a lot about self love and self confidence but I feel there is a lot more out there for me to learn. What are some of your greatest challenges in your business? The greatest challenge I face is balancing my muggle life and my burly life. Working two jobs, then dancing, costuming, seeing friends, and attempting to date is HARD! I m tired. But in the end its all worth it. You seem like a woman that stands out from the crowd and is proud of who she is (as well you should be). What would you tell the person that wants to stand out, but is a bit timid? I like to say that Deeva Rose is my Sasha Fierce. I m naturally a reserved person. I listen first and talk second. As Deeva I give myself permission to command a stage. Permission to take my clothes off and make people watch. It s really a thrilling process. I suggest that everyone give themselves permission to be their best version of themselves and let their freak flag fly. weight I can do it. I created this dumb guideline that didn t matter! I may never lose weight. I may never reach my goal size. So why stop living? You only have one life. It might as well be a happy one. Do you have a story about a time in your life that your uniqueness gave you strength? Now that I m a stripper, I feel like I can do anything. If I m nervous about talking to a hot guy I just say Fuck it. I m a stripper. I can take my clothes off in front of people. I can do anything. For those struggling with being themselves, are there any insights, or encouragement you d like to share? Right now I am exactly who I ve always wanted to be. My whole life I have wanted to be a performer and a pin up. My excuse for the longest time was When I lose some 12 13

9 MN UPs Magazine started the 2015 car show season with a bang, hosting television star, alt-model and burlesque star Danielle Colby at the annual Gopher State Timing Association show at the Minnesota State Fair Coloseum. We were also graced by the presence of amazing local talent, like the beautiful Krissy Jackson, photographed here by George Day of MetroStyle Photography. 11 Danielle was a real trouper, signing hundreds of autographs and spending two days posing for photos with excited fans. After the formal signing sessions, she helped award the winning entries and took pictures with some of the car owners on the show floor.
