52 BEN MULRONEY S TOP 10 PARENTING TIPS 10 IF YOU WORRY TOO MUCH about when your child will walk or talk, you miss out on the joyful everyday moments of being a parent. It really doesn t matter if your kid starts talking at a year or close to two years it will happen, so enjoy 9 IF YOUR YOUNG CHILD isn t clamouring to get out of a crib and into a bed, don t move them: once they get out, you can never get them back in, and any chance of sleeping in on a Sunday is out the window 8 READ TO YOUR KIDS, or make up bedtime stories they have incredible imaginations, so use that to your advantage 7 DON T LET YOUR KIDS SLEEP in your bed that is your bed. Your sanity is directly linked to your privacy. Cherish it 6 AFTER YOU HAVE KIDS, you become parents, but you never stop being individuals and/or a couple. Carve out time for yourselves and don t become those parents 5 LEAVE THE BABY TALK to the babies. Speak in full sentences to your kids. It will help them develop proper speech patterns 4 NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR POWER as a parent. You are smarter than your child and that should be reflected in your relationship 3 TURNING THE TV ON to distract your child in order to give you a few minutes to make dinner, get ready for work or just have a moment s peace does not make you an abusive or neglectful parent 2 NEVER LET YOUR KID pit you against the other parent. A united front is essential 1 HAVING A CHILD is a miracle, but it has also been happening since the beginning of time. Be smart, be caring and be attentive and all will be fine. You already know nearly everything you need to raise a good kid. My last piece of advice is: don t worry so much. Ben Mulroney is a doting dad and anchor of CTV s etalk 52 HELLO! 59 CANADIAN OSCAR WINNERS AT THE MOVIES ALICE S. HALL/NBC/GETTY IMAGES MARY PICKFORD (below) The beloved silent film star and Toronto native had been nicknamed America s Sweetheart by the time she took home the Academy Award for the talkie Coquette in But she never forgot her northern roots and we never stopped loving her for it. Mary was also awarded an honorary Oscar for her contribution to the industry three years before her death in NORMA SHEARER Montreal-born Norma had a certain je ne sais quoi on the screen and the academy certainly recognized it. She was nominated for six awards and took home the Best Actress prize for The Divorcée in Talent ran in the family. Norma s brother Douglas won an incredible 11 Oscars for sound and special effects. MARIE DRESSLER Sixty certainly wasn t the retirement age for this native of Cobourg, Ont. At 63, the actress s career hit a high note when she took home the award for Best Actress in a leading role for the dramedy Min and Bill. DEANNA DURBIN Long before she became the highest-paid actress of her era, Winnipeg-born nipeg-born Deanna was a precocious child star who had fans around the world, including Anne Frank. In recognition of her tremendous talent, the academy presented the then-17-year-old ear-old (as well as fellow budding star Mickey Rooney) with a special Oscar in 1939 for her signifi cant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personifi cation of youth. She died in April 2013 at the age of 91. HAROLD RUSSELL The Nova Scotia native lost both hands in a military accident during the Second World War and had never acted before appearing in 1946 s The Best Years of Our Lives. He went on to win the Best Supporting Actor trophy for the moving film about the reintegration of veterans after the war. WALTER HUSTON It was a family affair when Toronto native Walter won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, which was directed by his son and that year s Best Director winner John. Today, the family continues to rule in Hollywood circles. Walter s granddaughter Anjelica is an Oscar winner for 1985 s Prizzi s Honor and her nephew Jack stars on Boardwalk Empire. NORMAN JEWISON The director hit the big time in 1967 when In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier, beat out Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate for Best Picture. It was the beginning of a starry career for the Toronto-based filmmaker, who has since delighted audiences with hits such as Moonstruck, Fiddler on the Roof and The Hurricane. In 1998, the academy recognized him with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. ANNA PAQUIN The True Blood star was just 11 when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for The Piano in The second-youngest winner ever, the Winnipeg resident stood for several seconds before uttering a shocked, Thank you. JAMES CAMERON Our heart will always go on for the director from Chippawa, Ont. He brought us Avatar and Titanic, for which he took home the Best Director and Best Picture awards. PAUL HAGGIS The underdog at the 2006 Oscars, Paul was fl oored when his emotional indie film Crash took home the Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay prizes. He grew up in London, Ont. CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER Where have you been all my life? Toronto-born Christopher, then 82, asked his Oscar when he took home the Best Supporting Actor prize for Beginners in MYCHAEL DANNA Raised in Burlington, Ont., this composer won the prize for Best Original Score for Life of Pi in HELLO! 59

60 OSCAR FACTS OFFICIAL NAME: Academy Award of Merit WEIGHT: 8½ lb. HEIGHT: 13½ inches STATUES PRESENTED TO DATE: 2,809 LAST TIME STATUETTE S DESIGN CHANGED: 1945 MATERIALS: Gold-plated brittanium with metal base 1941: Year sealed envelopes were first used by presenters NUMBER OF ACADEMY MEMBERS IN 1927: 36 NUMBER OF ACADEMY MEMBERS TODAY: 4,523 It takes 3 to 4 weeks to produce 50 Oscars Statuettes were made of painted plaster for three years because of metal shortages in the Second World War The first statuette was presented on May 16, 1929, in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel to Emil Jannings for Best Actor Popular legend has it that on seeing the statuette for the first time, academy executive director Margaret Herrick said the award looked like her uncle Oscar The academy did not officially adopt the nickname Oscar until 1939 Other nicknames for the statuette include: A Heartbreaker Orson Welles; Something to be Feared George C. Scott; A Cruel Joke Marion Davies An Oscar win can add as much as $25 million to a film s profits As multiple recipients often share a single win (especially in technical categories), the academy has no way of knowing how many statuettes will be presented on Oscar night Excess statuettes are returned to the academy s vault It is designed to resemble a knight standing on a reel of film and holding a crusader s sword The film reel base has five spokes, each one signifying an original branch of the academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers Child Oscar winners were given miniature statuettes until the 1950s Replacement Oscars are issued but only in extenuating circumstances. Gene Kelly was given one after his was destroyed in a fire. Jack Lemmon also received a replacement after claiming his original statue had rusted Each statuette has its own distinct number stamped on the base Cedric Gibbons designed the statuette and director, screenwriter and actor Emilio Fernandez posed nude as inspiration THE STATUETTES ARE MANUFACTURED IN CHICAGO BY R.S. JANUARY 2013 APRIL 2013 SEAN GALLUP/GETTY IMAGES JESSICA BIEL APPEARED IN A STRING OF RECENT FILMS (INCLUDING TOTAL RECALL, HITCHCOCK COCK AND PLAYING FOR KEEPS), BUT IT WAS HER MARRIAGE TO JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE THAT CAUSED INTEREST IN THE ACTRESS TO SPIKE IN OCTOBER. HELLO! 77

78 DID YOU KNOW? Some Hollywood leading ladies have produced a couple of dead heats in online searches by Canadians. Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston were neck and neck, as were Rachel McAdams and Sandra Bullock. However, in February 2012, Angelina (and her stunning dress) generated four times more interest than Jennifer following Angie s appearance at the Oscars, despite the fact that Jen had received a star on the Walk of Fame just days earlier. Jen outdid Angie in searches in August, about the time she announced her engagement to Justin Theroux. But for overall online searches by Canadians, Angelina at the Oscars was tops. 79 CLOCKWISE (FROM TOP LEFT): NEWMARKET/EVERETT COLLECTION/CP; PARAMOUNT CLASSICS/EVERETT COLLECTION/CP; BALDUR BRAGASON; UNIVERSAL/EVERETT COLLECTION/CP; MATT SAYLES/AP/CP; UNIVERSAL The Role That Got Away... Some movies might have gone in a completely different direction had the actors originally meant for the roles been cast. BRADLEY COOPER and JENNIFER LAWRENCE in Silver Linings Playbook could have been VINCE VAUGHN and ZOOEY DESCHANEL. I thought I was going to make it with [them], said director David O. Russell. RACHEL MCADAMS in The Notebook could have been JESSICA BIEL. Mrs. Justin Timberlake auditioned for the role several times, including with the film s leading man, Ryan Gosling. That s one role that I wanted so badly, Jessica has said. SAM WORTHINGTON in Avatar was very nearly MATT DAMON. In fact, director James Cameron offered Matt the part. When he said, Look, I m offering it to you but if you say no, the movie doesn t need you, says Matt. I remember thinking, Oh, God, not only do I have to say no because of scheduling but he s going to make a star out of some guy who s going to start taking jobs from me later. JAMIE FOX in Django Unchained could have been WILL SMITH. Director Quentin Tarantino offered him the role, but Will turned it down because the part was second fiddle to Christophe Waltz s role. 117 FROM TOP: KEYSTONE PRESS; MICHAEL OCHS ARCHIVES/GETTY IMAGES Music Icons Who Didn t Read Music Michael Jackson The King of Pop wrote and composed songs but claimed he couldn t read or write sheet music. The Beatles None of us are technical musicians. None of us could read music. None of us can write it. But as pure musicians, as inspired humans to make the noise, we are as good as anybody. John Lennon Eric Clapton When playing with Aretha Franklin, he wrote, I felt so nervous because I couldn t read music and they were all playing from music sheets on stands. Frank Sinatra Not only could he not read music or play an instrument, the vocalist had a damaged ear drum and couldn t hear in stereo. While staying in suite 1742 of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth hotel in Montreal in 1969 with Yoko Ono, John Lennon wrote Give Peace a Chance. DID YOU KNOW? MEANING BEHIND THE NAMES OF CANADIAN BANDS THE TRAGICALLY HIP The name was inspired by a comedy sketch in Elephant Parts written by Michael Nesmith of the Monkees. RUSH As the newly formed band hastily tried to come up with a name, drummer John Rutsey s older brother made the winning suggestion. APRIL WINE The Nova Scotia band chose the name because they thought the words flowed nicely together. THE GUESS WHO Their record company devised an ingenious scheme to have radio DJs create a mystique around the band, referring to the artists as guess who? The name stuck. BLUE RODEO Finding a psychedelic cowboy name was the goal for Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. GREAT BIG SEA Band members brainstormed a list of names for their group and this one inspired by a tune about a tidal wave was the top pick. BARENAKED LADIES Steven Page and Ed Robertson made up this moniker while attending a Bob Dylan concert and joking about silly band names. NICKELBACK Before the band hit it big, bassist Mike Kroeger was a coffee shop cashier and would often say to customers, Here s your nickel back. Every girl I know has a crush on him. And so do most guys. LEONARD COHEN He may be pushing his 80s, but he s still as sexy as he was in the 60s. His assorted hats are terribly debonair, and as the prince of poetry, he ll forever reign supreme. SOPHIE GREGOIRE TRUDEAU As the vivacious wife of the newly appointed head of the national Liberal party, Sophie is poised to be one of Justin Trudeau s best assets: involved in numerous social causes, she s always chic and polished and exudes plenty of charisma and self-assurance. CARLY RAE JEPSEN The country s newest pop sweetheart obviously adores dressing up and her choice of sassy little outfi ts is always a joy to behold. She s got the kind of eclectic style that makes for great entertainment, whether she s singing her heart out onstage or working the red carpet. LINDA EVANGELISTA One of the original 80s supermodels, Linda has always been about transformation. In her current role as devoted mom to an adorable little boy, she still manages to ooze that haughty elegance that first earned her diva status on the world fashion stage and sealed her reputation as a bona fide international style icon. KIM CATTRALL As she approaches her late 50s, Kim is proof positive that age has nothing to do with sex appeal. It s as though she invented the phrase owning it. This wildly talented actress is ultimately comfortable in her own beautiful skin and never fails to strut her red-carpet looks as if she means seriously glamorous business. RYAN GOSLING Ryan s increasing style sophistication is evident, and coupled with his buff bod, his fashion sense has catapulted him into the category of gorgeous hunk. Trim, tailored 60s-style suits have become his trademark on the red carpet, and this simple, modern approach to dressing has helped set a new style standard for men. K.D. LANG We first fell in love with her dressed in a wedding frock and cowboy boots, and decades later, k.d. is still proving she s a true original. While she mostly sports men s suits these days, she s grounded enough to sing in her bare feet, as she did at the 2013 Juno Awards, where she reminded us that is OK to let our freak flags fly, and urged us to embrace the quirkmeister that is inside all of us. THE TENORS This Canadian quartet manages to walk the fine line between being a harmonious unit yet still maintaining individual voices. Each of the tenors is dashing, dapper and devilishly good-looking. They go for sartorial variety and look as delectable in leather jackets as they do in finely tailored suits.
