1 Hello Sarah, We have just celebrated the Fiestas del Pilar and I had a lot of fun. Although the fiestas del Pilar started officially on 8 th October, on 7 th October there were already concerts. So I went with my friends to an electronic music concert in the Parking Norte. It was a huge enclosure where there were different concerts every day. On 8 th October, we went to the opening speech on the Pilar Square. Luisa Gabasa, an actress from Aragón, did a great speech. And later we went to an other concert in Parking Norte. It was Dasoul s concert and we danced a lot. On 9 th October I had a familiar eating because my uncles and cousins from Madrid came to visit us and to see the fiestas del Pilar. We went to the fun fair and to the lamb marquee. However it was crowded, the food was delicious. On 12 th October I dressed my traditional costume to take part in the flowers offering. It s a tradition in Zaragoza and in my family to offer bunches of flowers to the Pilar Virgin and thousands of people participate in the parade. On 14 th and 15 th October we celebrated friend s birthdays and later we went to the city center to see buskers, street concerts and food stalls. On 16 th October I saw the fireworks that announced the end of the fiestas del Pilar. 1

This time I m writing to tell you about the Fiestas del Pilar. Las Fiestas del Pilar began on 8 th October this year with an opening speech made by the mayor -of Zaragoza-, Pedro Santisteve, and the Aragonese actress Luisa Gabasa. She has made many films like La Novia. After the opening speech, El himno a la libertad was played and sung, and there were fireworks, too. However, concerts had started the day before like Rave in the River, which took place in the Parking Norte. It must be said that there were more than two hundred concerts. Apart from concerts, people could go to a lot of nonreligious events such as Gigantes and Cabezudos, fireworks, fun-fairs, buskers, heffers, lamb marquee, food stalls, etc. Many of them were free and they took place in the city centre but it was necessary to pay for others such as musicals, lamb marquee... although they weren t too expensive. On the other hand, the Flowers offering was on 12 th October -like every year- and it s one of the most 2

3 important religious events on these days. Each year, participants go to give flowers to the Virgin of Zaragoza, La Vírgen del Pilar. Moreover, they wear traditional costumes which are really elaborate. The next day, it s the fruits offering and it s less popular. Finally, the Fiestas del Pilar finished with fireworks on 16 th October. I had a great time this year and I hope you can come one day to see all the events and have a good time too. I want to tell you how I have started celebrating this festivity with my friends two years ago. Last years I went to concerts, danced, and I celebrated my birthday. However, this year I wanted to do something different and I told my parents about travelling to another city: Madrid. And that s what I have done. I spent three days there. I visited museums (Museo del Prado), the Real Palace, Escorial and I have walked a lot. It was great to celebrate my birthday with my sister and my mum. We had dinner 3

4 in an Italian restaurant and then we decided to go to a Starbucks but all of them were closed!!! I really enjoyed these days; my family is really special for me. On the 12 th I am going to have lunch with my grandparents to celebrate this special day. I missed a little bit going out with my friends but I couldn t have enjoyed more in Madrid. Marta, you have to come one year to celebrate it. In this festivity people enjoy dancing in concerts, singing, going out with friends, etc. The drawback is that people use to drink too much, and streets are dirty because we are not careful If you like parties, and music, then this is your festivity! I hope we will see each other soon, I miss you so much. In these days you can prepare yourself to the Flowers Offering to the virgin too. It s beautiful. As you may already know, last week The Pilar Festivities were held in Zaragoza. They started 4

5 officially on 8 th of October and lasted for nine days. But, for teenagers, they started one day before, when the festival that most of us attended began. Next day, on the 8 th, I went with my friends to the city centre for a walk. There were many food stalls, buskers, mimes and also a huge marquee near the river called The Lamb Marquee, where people go to eat typical food. After that, at 9 o clock, we went to Pilar Square to listen to the opening speech by the actress Luisa Gavasa. After it, we admired the fireworks which indicated the beginning of the most important festivities in my city. At midnight, we attended another concert which was so much fun. On the 9 th, on Sunday, I went with my friends to my last concert as the following day I left the city. I spent two days in San Sebastián with my family and it was an awesome experience. Moreover, on Wednesday, when I arrived from San Sebastián, I went to the funfairs with my little brother and we also had dinner there. Next Friday I stayed at home because I was too tired to go out as I had to go to school on Thursday and Friday. Even so, on Saturday I celebrated my birthday with my best friends. Finally, on Sunday night, I went to an area close to the river to see the closing ceremony of 5
