2 Note This is a Grade 9 Geography Project from June These proposals were made solely for the purposes of a Bells Corners Sustainability Project, whose purpose was to redesign Bells Corners to make it better. None of these proposals should be interpreted, nor considered, as actual, or possible plans for redevelopment of the community of Bells Corners, or the surrounding area. All figures and statistics are subject to change, and are relevant as of either June 2015, or the date provided.

6 Physical Geography Characteristics climate is continental warm in summers cool in winters weather can change fast in Bells Corners soils good for farming farming around Bells Corners
7 Landscape Characteristics landscape slightly slanted, rolling, with some hills Greenbelt surrounds Bells Corners Greenbelt made up of forest and wetland farmland north & east of community farmland and Greenbelt limit urban development NCC very strict about Greenbelt development no other limitations on development no mountains, valleys, or lakes
8 Vegetation Characteristics many types of vegetation grow in Greenbelt trees grasses etc... crops grown around community corn garlic etc
9 Vegetation - Farming farming has occurred in Bells Corners since 1851 today, farms are still around the community east, near Robertson & Baseline north, near Moodie and 417 farming not as large an industry today
10 Land Use different ways of land use in Bells Corners residential commercial institutional industrial transportation recreational possibly another use: protected forest land use pretty sustainable, could be better though
11 Land Use Breakdown more housing in Bells Corners West more commercial in Bells Corners East transportation methods throughout community roads, bike paths, rail line, etc... institutions along Robertson Road General Dynamics (military contractor) Fitzgerald Federal Complex several parks throughout the community not-to-mention the Greenbelt
12 Population Density pop. density of Bells Corners West is 3180 people per km squared pop. density of Bells Corners East is 1532 people per km squared large difference between parts of community Bells Corners East more commercial Bells Corners West more residential
13 Population Characteristics Bells Corners had a total population of 9,468 as of Bells Corners East majority of pop. aged 50 to 59 more women than men, but only slightly more Bells Corners West majority of pop. aged 20 to 29 more women than men, but only slightly more similar to Bells Corners East
14 Education several schools in Bells Corners 1 English Public 1 Catholic Public/Middle 1 English Intermediate 1 English High School 1 French-Catholic High School a few private schools
15 Unemployment Ottawa Unemployment Rate unemployment rate is slightly higher than provincial average around 7% (7.5%) mostly due to technology sector slowdown
16 More Population Characteristics average population age: 39.2 years old most people in Bells Corners are either married or single wide diversity of people several churches & a mosque not as big of an immigrant community average household size: about 2 people unemployment pretty low
17 Sustainable Strategies buildings will be more eco-friendly eco-friendly houses eco-industrial parks all commercial area (pedestrian mall) one main parking area put vegetation on roofs reduce radiant heat grow food in previous wasted space use renewable energy
18 Sustainable Strategies place community closer to 417 and future LRT transit new segregated bike lanes throughout Bells Corners running north-south and east-west on Robertson Road & Moodie Drive more sidewalks on almost every street community more bike and pedestrian friendly
