1 Media Meet Art medi[a]rt Tove Jansson Description: Our pupils learned about the life and art of the Finnish artist Tove Jansson. Each classed watched a power point-presentation on Tove Jansson, read Moomin books and watched Moomin films. The pupils also learned about the Finnish crafts tradition and different techniques in art and handicrafts. Next the Tove Jansson themes were worked on at art and crafts lessons. On the basis of what they had learned the pupils produced works based on Jansson s art and books. Pupils learned new skills and techniques in creating artworks alongside with new media. They wrote and illustrated books with the help of Book Creator software. The pupils made a stick puppet show which was captured on video. Pupils worked in groups to develop their skills in editing with imovie and MovieMaker. In the rya rug work the pupils made use of an age-old Finnish crafts tradition to make a Moomin picture. In the scale enlargement artwork the scales found in mathematics were also studied. The working methods are based on the new national core curriculum: Transversal competences: thinking and learning-to-learn, learning and problem solving, interaction and cooperation expression skills, communication and media skills, ICT competence. Multidisciplinary learning modules: project that combines the content of different subjects and deals with the selected theme from the perspective of several subjects. Aims: -to learn about Tove Jansson s life and production -to write and illustrate a story, making the process visible. -to learn new techniques in both art and crafts (patchwork embroidery, the rya rug work) -to learn to use different software/applications and web-based learning platforms such as Book Creator, Kahoot, imovie

2 - to learn to make a stick puppet show: making the puppets and the props, learning lines, learning to emphatise with the role characters, presenting your own work to others. Lesson plan by Pauliina Lassila, 2C Book Creator story on "Moominland Midwinter" 1. Read the book "Moominland Midwinter" by Tove Jansson. 2. Plan out your own winter story with Moomin characters. No more than 6 episodes / images. 3. Paint the background sceneries for the episodes and possibly make the Moomin figures with dough (if ready-made figures aren't available). 4. Plan out the texts/lines ("manuscript"). 5. Take photos using ipad. 6. Transfer the photos to Book Creator application and create your pages. 7. Save and transfer to Dropbox. 8. Print out your story. 4 1. We read The book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My by Tove Jansson 2. We chose some events and pages from the book. 3. We copied the pages, glued the copied pictures of the characters onto cardboard, cut them out and attached them to wooden sticks by tape. 4. We decided on roles, read the lines and practiced moving the stick puppets in front of the background scenery created on the board by drawing and clippings. 5. We added some sound effects to accompany the puppet show. 6. The show was shot on video with an ipad by 4th year pupils. 7. The video was edited by 4th year pupils. There were approximately 12 pupils in a group Total time: 7-8 hours Lesson plan by Tiina Lähteenmäki, Class 2B A Moomin Rya Rug based on a book by Tove Jansson 1. Read out loud "Moominland Midwinter" by Tove Jansson. 2. Plan out A Moomin Rya Rug. 3. Cut out of felt cloth the pieces for the background scenery with the help of patterns made by the teacher (black sky and blue snow). 4. Glue the background scenery on sackcloth. Leave room for the northern lights. 5. Sew on the northern lights with knitting wool in 3-4 colours, using rug stitches. 6. Cut out of felt cloth Moomintroll, stars etc. and glue them on the background scenery. Use a black felt pen to draw in details. Use glue to attach eyes on Moomintroll. 7. Fringe up the edges and tidy up with scissors. 8. Add some kind of loops/hooks for hanging up as well as a supporting stake pupils are working at a time. 5 Scale enlargement of the images by Tove Jansson 1. Read the book "Who will Comfort Toffle?". 2. Take colour copies of characters. 3. Choose a picture and draw it a frame. 4. Measure and draw lightly a 1 cm x 1cm grid on the original picture. 5. Count the squares horizontally and vertically. 6. Count how many squares are needed to fill up an A3-sheet and choose the enlargement scale. 7. Draw one square and one line at a time. Measure on the original square the spot where the line crosses the helping line. Mark this point on your enlargement, so that, for example, on scale 5:1, 1mm on the original is 5 mm on your enlargement. Finally draw together the helping points and move on to the next square. 8. Erase the helping grid off your enlargement. 9. Colour up and name your piece of art. First read a Moomin illustrated book or watch some Moomin video as motivation. Also read about Tove Jansson s life. 2. Draw a Moomin character or find a picture of them. 3. Cut a piece of sticky-backed plastic onto the Moomin picture, attach it with some blu-tac onto the picture, sticky side up. 4. Cut thin strips of black paper, attach them to line out the characters. 5. Fill the inner parts with silk paper. 6. Cut away the extra sticky-backed plastic. 7. Attach onto a window.

6 Evaluating 1. Kahoot Pupils made quizzes on Tove Jansson with Kahoot, a game-based learning platform 2. QR-code Pupils made a multiple choice quiz based on Who wants to be a Millionaire (learningapps.com) 3. Summarize the learned material, Power point -presentation Children had to include a picture and a short text on each page. 4. Pupils did evaluation using the camera-pencil method; first on their own participation on the process and second on the outcome of the group.
