2 Friday, April 28, :30 a Registration Desk Open 8:00 a-12:30 p Bookstore and Exhibits Open 8:00-8:30 a Presidents Welcome / Past Presidents Presentation 8:45-9:45 a OPENING KEYNOTE - David Glickman David Glickman 9:45-10:00 a David Glickman Book Signing 10:00-10:15 a Past Presidents 10:15-11:15 a KEYNOTE - Peter Gray Funny is the New Serious Just look around the average workplace and you ll see most employees dealing with lots of stress. Well, the good news is that there s a successful strategy to approach these challenges. David Glickman will teach you how Funny Is The New Serious. How changing your perspective will lead to a profound way of handling these frustrations. And this program isn t so much a traditional speech as it is a full-blown, high-energy one-man show. It s got observational humor, funny visuals, hilarious song parodies, and a big rock and roll finish! Peter Gray How Play and Humor Made Human Beings Possible: Homo Ludens Revisited Through most of human evolutionary history, we were all hunter-gatherers. Research on huntergatherer groups who survived as such into the mid to late 20th century reveals that play and humor suffused all of their social activities. Here I will describe the roles of play and humor in huntergatherers means of governance, religious practices, subsistence activities (hunting and gathering), and approach to childcare and education. A theme running throughout is that play and humor allowed hunter-gatherers to live in highly cooperative, highly egalitarian multi-male, multi-female groups something that was not possible for other primates. On the basis of this work, coupled with research into the roles of play in other mammals, I will present a play-based theory of human biological and cultural evolution. This talk will provide additional support for Johan Huizinga s contention, in his classic book (Homo Ludens) that Homo Ludens (man the player) may be a better descriptor for our species than Homo Sapiens. 11:15-11:30 a BREAK / Peter Gray Book Signing 11:30 a-12:15 p Humor Samplers: 45 minutes. Choose one of the following: Michael Rousell Joyce Saltman Beth Slazak The Power and Purpose of Play in the Classroom The session illustrates several innovative approaches to applying humor as a tool for effective teaching. Session participants will learn how teachers blend current research in teaching and learning with humor studies to facilitate engaging, collaborative, and creative learning environments. Session participants will also engage in some humor activities. Gender and Ethnic Differences in Humor This session will examine the field of comedy in terms of the gender of those performing it, as well as those who are traditionally the butt of many jokes. We will particularly explore the Jewish princess, WASP, and Jewish and Italian mother genre, as well as jokes targeting husbands - all fair game for teasing! If you are easily offended, this is not a good session for you! Toying Around With Your Biosphere Keystones are the apex of an arch in architecture, they hold the structure up. They carry the least amount of stress, as their job nearly is to push against the other forces. In ecosystems, however, they are the organisms that determine how the habitat functions. Their existence changes the function and flow of the world in which they habit. They are both unique and crucial. Very few of us are architectural keystones, we do not live a stress free existence. Instead, we are biosphere keystones, constantly effecting the societies with which we come in contact. How might we best do this? What do we do to create a truly symbiotic relationship in our worlds?
