Process Book Project 1 MckSweeney s Article Marina Semez
Creative Brief Online editorial platforms are trying new and exciting ways of presenting content to make full use of the digital experience. The challenge is to bring a short McSweeney s article to life, while considering the flow of content, visual design, animated enhancements, and overall responsive nature.
The Article Reasons you were not Promoted that are Totally Unrelated to Gender is written by Homa Mojtabai. It hilariously outlines all the assumptions and accussations that women are constantly hearing in both professional and personal interactions.
Concept The target demographic for this article is women ages 18+. Naturally, while reading the article, I could not help but visualize different women hearing these accusations from arrogant men. I knew I wanted to illustrate the personality and emotion behind what these females feel. My goal was to illustrate this article in a light-hearted, funny way, with a dose of sorry not sorry.
Inspiration This small artist s zine inspired me with its textures, weirdness, and color palette. If I were to use illustration in my design, I knew I would have to keep it simplified because of my time limit.
Sketching I started to sketch exactly what I saw in my head when reading this article; annoyed women. I practiced different scenarios with people in different positions and angles.
Concepts The sarcastic and humorous tone of the article made me want to keep a light and playful tone with the design, with a hint of WTF and NO.. A B C Reasons you were not promoted that are completely unrelated to gender Reasons you were not promoted that are completely unrelated to gender 10 Reasons you were not promoted that are completely unrelated to gender Reasons you were not promoted that are completely unrelated to gender 1 You don t smile enough. People don t like you. You don t smile enough. People don t like you. you don t smile enough. people don t like you. You smile too much. People don t take you seriously. You don t smile enough. people don t like you. 2 You smile too much. people don t take you seriously. You smile too much. People don t take you seriously. -have single man/woman per line you don t speak up. we d really like to see You take on more of a Leadership role before we pay you for being a leader.. You smile too much. People don t take you seriously. 3 You don t speak up. We d really like to see you take on more of a leadership role before we pay you for being a leader. You don t speak up. We d really like to See you take on more Of a leadership role before we pay you for being a leader.. You re sloppy. like when you sent that with a typo. you don t speak up. we d really like to see you take on more of a Leadership role before we pay you for being a leader.. 4 You re sloppy. Like when you sent that with a typo. You re sloppy. Like when you sent that with a typo. 5 You re sloppy. like when you sent that with a typo.
Type Experimentation The more comical, experimental direction was most successful. In this step, the black text in my own handwriting was most legible and cohesive with the drawings. For I would streamline the style of my handlettering 10 Reasons you were not promoted by HOMA MOJTABAI that are completely unrelated to gender by HOMA MOJTABAI
Color & Type I wanted to convey power and anger with the deep reds and magenta as my primary colors. As inspired as I was by the two-tone artist s zine, I personally cannot stop myself adding colors. The greens were added to compliment the jungle theme that comes into the comic in the end. And the yellow was used for a pop of contrast. I decided to write in all caps for the sake of readability and consistency. Nikko Rull brush in ProCreate Studio Pen brush in ProCreate My own handwriting
Critique In my second iteration, the title needed to be smaller and have some more interesting elements in it. It also felt a bit crowded, and needed to be opened up with more white space. In order to implement animations, I wanted to add supporting graphics in between scenes that would add visual relief. The color palette got a great response, for being modern and feminine, without being obnoxious.
Wireframing In planning the coding process, I made wireframes that would help me visualize my chunks of information.
Procreate Process Working in procreate meant being extremely organized with files, and painting for seamless transitions between scenes in the website. I drew each scene on top of a mock pink background, which was later removed for.png export. The final background was made in a separate file.
Final Website click me The final design is quirky, colorful, and textural how it s meant to be. In another revision, I would like to experiment more with overlapping more textures on top of the existing rows. I also want more user interaction, maybe by adding responsive gifs in place of certain scenes.
Thank You.
