Go onto our Web sit at hamilononline.net to read what our customers have written about our service. We hope you ll be our next satisfied customer.
Part OK, before you start serving food, I want to let you know that the restaurant is a bit understaffed tonight. Tamara called me this afternoon to let me know that she has a cold. So I m asking each of you to be in charge of one extra table tonight. Please also remember to tell each table of guests about our new menu special-it s a rice dish with assorted grilled vegetables. I think it ll be very popular because many of our customers have been asking for more vegetarian options. That s all for tonight.
Part Hello and welcome to the tenth annual Video Game Expo. My name is Jay Patal, and I m the president of Ludlow Enterprises, one of the official sponsors of this year s trade show. I m here to tell you about an exciting opportunity. Our company is developing a new video game, and we want your story ideas! Send us an describing your vision for the plot of the next Ludlow adventure game. If your idea is selected as the winner, we ll arrange for your to travel to Tokyo, with all expenses paid, for next year s Video Game Expo.
Part Today, tourists and residents alike gathered at the Keller Center to view the latest exhibit that opened this morning. The exhibit, called Island Garden, features a wide variety of tropical plants and will run through the end of the month. As many of you know, the Keller Center is renowned for its commitment to the environment. They recently hired architect Sean Briggs to design a new visitors center with the requirement that the new building run primarily on energy from solar panels. The center s board of directors was impressed with the portfolio that Mr. Briggs presented to them, and said that his designs were the strongest they had seen.
Part Attention Garrington Grace employees. Starting next month we re installing new digital locks on all of the exterior doors. Everyone will need to get a new, um, digital key. Bring your employee ID badge to the security desk, and the guard will make a new key for you. The new keys will be linked exclusively to your employee ID, so we will be able to see who enters and leaves the building at any given time. There s more information available about the upcoming security changes in the company newsletter, so make sure to check that out. After reviewing it, if you have any questions, talk to your department head. Thanks.
Part Hello Mr. Lee, this is Thomas from BKS Auto Shop calling with some information about your car repair. I know we told you that it would take until next week to get the part we ordered, but we got the part early, and I was able to finish the repair. We re going to be closing for the day in a few minutes, but you re welcome to come get your car anytime tomorrow. If you need a ride to the shop tomorrow, let me know, and I can arrange one for you.
Part So I called this meeting to discuss our contract with Torland Advertising and to decide whether we should ahm should continue to use them to develop our radio advertising materials. I had a discussion with their people yesterday and I have to say, I m a little concerned. They seem much more focused on cutting their costs than they are on providing good quality advertising for us. Here s the thing. If we decide to end this business relationship, we ll need to pay them for anything they ve already developed. Please take a minute to look at this contract with me. You ll see that s part of the agreement we made.
Part We re happy to see you all at this seminar this afternoon we have a lot of useful information to cover. But before we start, a few administrative details. There will be one break, half way through the afternoon. You can leave your laptops here if you leave the room there will always be someone in here but do keep your money and phones or ah other small electronic devices with you. Don t leave them at the tables. And please note that there s an error in your printed program: there will be a change a switch in times for the last two presenters. Ms. Ohta has to leave a little early today.
Part As most of you know, I was sure our new Web site would have all sorts of glitches, but luckily I was wrong. So far we haven t encountered any technical difficulties, and our customers are mostly pleased with the new services we re offering. They especially like the feature to receive notifications when out-of-stock products are refilled. One thing that s surprising me, though, is how different age groups are responding to the Web site design. The results on this graph are, um, not what I expected. Jen, I want you to look into why this age group is the happiest with the site. Hopefully we can use that information to boost overall satisfaction.
Part Hi, Ken. It s Jenny calling from Operations here at the head office. I m guessing you re on your way to Stan s Office Supply. Listen I have a copy of your to buy list of things for our first-floor lounge, and there s good news. According to the flyer I got this morning, every item on the list is on sale except for that desk fan it s still full-price. But we ll pay less for the round table for sure. When you get back, we ll need to set up the furniture right away since the clients are coming on Wednesday, and we ll be holding some small meetings in that room. OK. See you soon then.
DEVELOPING LISTEING SKILLS 3 Unit 5. Music
Look & Listen 1. M: Excuse me. Do you have any Tejano music? W: I m sorry, I m new here. What kind of music are you looking for? M: Tejano music. It s a traditional music from the northern part of Mexico and the southern part of Texas. W: I m not sure if we have any of that kind of music. Let me ask the manager. (
2. W: How come you always come to work so energetic? M: I listen to rock music as I get ready for work. I play it on the radio from the moment I wake up until I get to work. W: I usually have to drink lots of coffee to wake up.
3. M: the music is too loud here. W: it s rap music. I say the louder, the better. M: It hurts my ears. How can you stand it? Next time we come here, I m bringing earplugs. W: Don t worry. The next time I want to come here, I won t bother asking you to come along.
4. W: Have you heard the great new electronic version of this jazz song? M: No, how is it different? W: The song is longer with a faster beat and more repetitive. M: I don t think I d like it. It sounds like it might be boring to listen to.
Listening Practice-How would you answer? 1. What do you think of this band? 2. Do you recognize this song? 3. What does that kind of music sound like? 4. Have you heard the new version of this song? 5. What is that you re listening to?
Listening Practice-How would you ask? 1.No, not really. 2.I play the violin. 3.I did a long time ago. 4.Sure, I love this song. 5.I don t have a ticket.
Conversation Pictures 1. W: Could you turn up the radio please? M: Sure, I love this song. W: Me, too, the music is so soothing. It reminds me of my childhood. M: I find it helps me get to sleep at night.
2. M: Excuse me, what time will the music start? W: They usually start at 8:00. M: This is my favorite band. I follow them everywhere. The drummer is incredible. W: Wow, you must be a big fan! I ve never heard them before.
3. M: I m going to take piano lessons. W: Have you ever played before? M: Yes, a long time ago, I used to know how to play a lot of fun pop songs, but I ve forgotten most of it. W: You ll probably pick it up again quickly. I bet you remember more than you think you do.
4. W: Last night, I saw a girl playing the flute right here on this street corner. M: I don t like people playing music in public. W: But it was so lovely. She played with such grace and style. M: I bet she just wanted to make a little bit of money.
Short Dialogs Dialog 2 W: What is your favorite musical instrument? M: I ve always liked the way a saxophone sounds. W: I like the piano. You can play so many different kinds of music on the piano. You can play it loudly, softly, quickly, or slowly. M: True, but the saxophone has such a smooth sound. And you can t carry a piano around. It s too big and heavy. 1. What is a benefit described of the piano? 2. What is a benefit described of the saxophone?
Dialog 3. M: Every year, during the holiday season, my family goes to hear Handel s Messiah. W: I ve never gotten a chance to hear it played live. M: You should join us this year. W: Does the city orchestra have good singers for it? M: Yes, they bring in professional singers every year for the concert. W: That sounds like it would be wonderful. I d love to go, thank you.
Short Talk 2 M: My wife introduced me to Sandra Peterson last night. Sandra is the first-chair violinist for the city orchestra. I was actually surprised that my wife knew Sandra. My wife enjoys playing in a non-professional chamber orchestra in her free time, but I had no idea how she would meet someone like Sandra. Then Sandra explained to me that she d had actually been roommates with my wife when they were in music school together. I find it very interesting to think that both of these women went to the same school and studied the same instrument. However, they ve ended up living very different lives after music school. Q1. what is Sandra Peterson s job? Q2. what can be inferred about the man s wife?
Short Talk 3 W: Hi, Tamara. It s Jasmine. I got your message about going to the jazz festival this weekend. I know the tickets are free and there are going to be some great performers there, but I m not sure I want to go. I hate to drive in that part of town where they hold the festival. All of those one-way streets confuse me. Plus, there is the headache of trying to find parking during the festival. It s always crazy down there, and even if you can find parking, it costs a fortune. Anyway, if you don t have to drive, then may be I ll consider going with you. Give me a call and we can talk some more about it. Bye.
Picture Matching 1. W: the seats we had at the rock concert were great. M: I thought they were too close to the speakers. W: But we were right near the stage, with a great view of the band. 2. M: The seat we had at the concert were great. W: I thought they were too far from the stage. M: But we were center stage at the front of the balcony. That s the perfect spot for a full view of the orchestra.
Listen & Choose Q3. M: What do you think of this song? W: I like the rhythm. M: Me, too. It s very easy to dance to. W: Would you like to dance with me? M: Sure, I d love to dance. 3. Most likely, where are the speakers?
Q4. W: Hey, you look familiar. M: So do you. W: Have you ever played in the downtown music festivals? M: I perform in the Beethoven Festival every year. W: That must be where we ve seen each other before. 4. When did the speakers see each other before?
Q5~6. W: Excuse me. What is that you re listening to? M: It s called Tibetan throat singing. W: I ve never heard anything like it before. That s just people singing, with no musical instruments? M: Yes, it s an old traditional style of music. Tibetan monks spend many years learning the technique. 5. What is the man listening to? 6. What is the woman s reaction to the music?
7 W: the coffee house had a guitar player and singer last night. M: How were they? W: The guitar player seemed a bit nervous. M: That s funny. He must have had stage fright, but the coffee house is such a small space to play at. W: Yeah. Anyway, the singer was good. She made up for any lack in the guitarist s performance. 7. According to the woman, which musician performed better?
8~9 M: Did you recognize the song being played in the elevator? W: Yes, I thought I was the only person who knew it. M: I knew it right away. It was played at my senior prom. W: Mine, too! We must have graduated around the same time. M: it s been so long since I heard it. W: you know you re getting old when music from your youth is played in elevators. 8. Which is true about the speakers? 9. When they were young, where did each person hear the song?
