Local Celeb She s the fierce, sharp and tough presenter SA loves to watch. But when Devi s not hard at work on Carte Blanche, she tunes into some riveting M-Net shows. South Africans know her as the fearless investigative journalist whose unwavering determination to expose the truth often makes for explosive viewing on Carte Blanche every Sunday night on M-Net. However, behind the scenes, Devi Sankaree Govender is an ambitious and devoted working mom and wife who describes herself as being proudly South African. With all Devi has on her plate, it s a wonder she has time for anything else. But the hard-working journalist enjoys What I m watching watching a little telly and has a soft spot for the medium. She says: TV takes you everywhere. You can t hide anything, not your emotions, not who you really are. I love working on TV for all those reasons, including the fact that I get to be me all the time. No smoke or mirrors. As for seeing herself on screen? Devi explains that she engages with viewers on social media while the show is on, so she has to be on the ball. I m very critical when I watch myself on TV. I always seem to find things I need to do better. That said, there are also times when I give myself a pat on the back for a job well done It doesn t happen often though! 2 AUGUST 2017
Winter does have a hibernation factor for me. And, I love it! So, after another thrilling day on the field for Carte Blanche, here are a few of my favourites. 3. THE GOOD OD FIGHT I ve enjoyed The Good Wife and this spinoff is certainly ticking boxes for me. 2 WED 13:55 1. HOUSE OF CARDS V This is one of my all-time favourite series. I enjoy the intense drama of Washington politics It s a break from our own! Wednesdays 22:30 2. GAME OF THRONES VII I m madly, wildly, happily in love with this series. Why? Because I m transported into another world of beauty, demons and magic. Mondays 21:30 QUICK QUESTIONS: What is your all-time favourite show? Carte Blanche, of course! It is not the number one show on M-Net for nothing. We do it all, so you can see it all! When do you watch TV? After supper has been cooked, lunches packed and homework checked... then, it s my TV time. Who do you watch with? Normally with my husband. But it is sometimes nice to have the entire bed to yourself (with the electric blanket on high ). Any favourite TV snacks? Roasted peri-peri brazils, pecan and walnuts. I make them myself. TV TAKES YOU EVERYWHERE. YOU CAN T HIDE ANYTHING, NOT YOUR EMOTIONS, NOT WHO YOU REALLY ARE. DEVI AUGUST
Cover Story Two of South SA S Africa s top foodies are getting a taste kitchens of what people are whipping up in their own kitchens. Magic chatted to them about the experience. RULE! First, he conquered the local music industry, now J Something s making a name for himself on the food scene. He s proving his knowledge of the culinary arts as a judge on My Kitchen Rules SA and he s doing so while looking very sharp and dashing, he says... We ve see some fierce rivalry between contestants on the Australian version, what can we expect from MKR SA? The contestants started off not knowing what to expect, but after the first judgement, they quickly started to figure each other out as competitors. They ve opened up a little bit and have become more verbal. There s an interesting undertone of rivalry so far I think there s a lot of drama coming your way! Do you think the contestants are intimidated by your presence? I think there s an element of nerves because there s a lot at stake, but the cool thing is that it s not only our opinions as the judges that count. The contestants also judge one another. How important is a dish s presentation? We are visual beings, so when you present food to people, you need to make sure that it looks appealing. Do you watch the Australian version and has it influenced your approach at all? Yes, I watch and have been a fan of the show before the South African version began. I think the judges in Australia have set a vision for the show but it s also important that I bring my own flavour into it. I can only be me. You re incredibly busy with food projects, including your restaurant, Something s Cooking by J. What about your music? Mi Casa is launching a new album this August called Familia and we will be touring nationwide. Music is at the forefront of what I do, everything else is on the side. How do you make time for family with such a busy schedule? It s a tricky situation but I try to be in the moment, even if I have a million-and-one things going on. When I m home, I m home. I put my phone away, zone in and focus my energy on that moment. 4 AUGUST 2017
ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS IS THAT WE GET TO INTERACT WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE S STORIES AND I THINK THAT S WHERE THE FLAVOURS COME FROM. J Something Dishing on David 1. Which one of you is the hardest judge to please? David. 2. What does David often say while filming the show? David always says, my friend, either happy or frustrated. 3. Who has the sweeter tooth? Me. 4. Who likes their food the spiciest? Me. 5. What is David s favourite course? Mains. 6. What is it like to work with David? It s been a very cool experience. 7. The first time I met David I was at the Eat Out Awards in Cape Town. He was one of the judges, and I was attending and performing. AUGUST
David Higgs The juice on J Something 1. Which one of you is the hardest judge to please? Me, because I m very critical and I break down the dish from start to finish. 2. What does J Something often say while filming the show? When the energy is low on set, he says: Come on now. Somehow it works and gets everyone s energy back up. 3. Who has the sweeter tooth? J, no doubt! He always finishes his pudding and I hardly finish mine. 4. Who likes their food the spiciest? J he s a Portuguese man! 5. Which is J Something s favourite course? Dessert, for sure. 6. What is it like to work with J Something? It s been great and I was definitely happy to work with someone like him. He s interesting to watch, dedicated to his work and very likeable. 7. The first time I met J Something It was very clear that he has a passion for food! 8 AUGUST 2017
Cover Story FOOD WITH A STORY IS EMOTIONAL AND IT TOUCHES A LOT OF THE SENSES EVEN BEFORE YOU TASTE IT. With a background in food, award-winning chef David Higgs could be the more intimidating judge in the eyes of My Kitchen Rules SA s contestants. Especially since, he says, he doesn t smile as often as his jovial and easygoing co-judge, J Something. But, what s behind that stern exterior? What has surprised you the most about the standard of cooking on MKR SA? Because we are looking for the country s best home cook and not particularly a master chef, the surprise has been seeing some of these recipes that have been passed down the family as well as the different techniques used. Sometimes it works really well and sometimes it doesn t! Which of the dishes you ve tasted so far stand out? There are a couple of dishes, but there was this one main course. It was a game dish and it was beautifully cooked. The technique was great! It was tasty and trendy in its presentation. What are some of the main things you consider when scoring a dish? First off is what is on the menu. Is the food and technique described on the menu actually on the plate or not? Secondly, I like to hear about the story of the dish whether it s a family recipe or something inspired by travelling. Food with a story is emotional and it touches a lot of the senses even before you taste it. Lastly, I go into taste, which is the biggest factor for me. The food must be cooked properly, has to be well seasoned and must have flavour. The Australian judges are always so sharply dressed. Tell us a bit about your wardrobe on MKR SA? I m quite excited by the clothes we wear on the show. When you wear something nice you feel good. The suit element is definitely there but it has a bit of a South African element to it. If you were to host an instant restaurant at your home, what would you call it and what would you serve? Since I hardly cook at home, I think it would be a special thing. I would just call it Home. I would start with something that should be eaten by hand eating with your hands creates a more relaxing atmosphere. Something like chicken wings or lamb ribs cooked on the fire. For mains I would prepare something lighter like shellfish, something to do with prawns. For dessert, even though professionally I like to finish with something lighter, at Home I would go for a warm dessert like malva pudding with a pumpkin and ginger ice cream. MY KITCHEN RULES SA SERIES SUN 13 AUG 18:00 AUGUST
MEET THE FIRST5 Bruce & Claudia Mr & Mrs Midrand This married couple is sure to turn up the heat in the kitchen! Bruce, who is a Martial Arts world champ, loves Asian-influenced food and doesn t shy away from spice and chillies. Bruce is worried about Claudia s tendency to burn things while Claudia s issue is the mess Bruce makes as he uses every dish and utensil in the kitchen. She loves sweeter foods and is inspired by her travels around the world. CONTESTANT PAIRS Kelly & Claire Book Club Besties Kyalami They may have met 10 years ago at a book club, but these ladies love being active. Watch as they work up a sweat in the kitchen creating some of their favourite dishes inspired by French cuisine, Asian fusions and good old home cooking. Claire s dream is to own a bread and beer truck, while Kelly would love to become a food critic. How the show works J Something and David Higgs travel across SA as contestants transform their home kitchens into Instant Restaurants. The best teams will progress to the final rounds to compete in a custom-designed restaurant space. This culminates in a highpressured final during which the last two teams standing have to serve a three-course meal to a full restaurant. Follow MKR SA online mnet.tv/mkrsa #MKRSA
