Ben, did you take the tube this morning? Ben: Yes, I did! I came in on the Bakerloo line. Nicole: And did you talk to anyone? Ben: Oh no! I just read the Metro and had my headphones in! Nicole: Well, a man called Jonathan Dunne wants to change that. He s an American living in London and he wants Londoners to talk to each other more... on the underground! Ben: People chatting on the tube? What do Londoners think about that? Our reporter Sonia is at Baker Street Station. Sonia, are you there? Sonia: Hi Nicole and Ben. It s very busy in Baker Street this morning rush hour! People are going to work. There are lots of commuters. Excuse me! Sonia: I m with TEAM Radio. What do you think about Passerby 1: Sorry, I can t stop! I m late for work! Sonia: Wow, he s in a hurry! OK, let s try someone else. Excuse me! Passerby 2: Hmm? Sonia: Can you spare a minute for TEAM Radio? Passerby 2: Sure. Sonia: Do you ever talk to anyone on the tube? Passerby 2: Um... I only talk to my friends people I know. Sonia: Do you ever chat to strangers? Passerby 2: No way! Sonia: Why not? Passerby 2: When I travel on the tube it s my quiet time. I prefer to zone out and chill. Sonia: So you don t want to wear one of these badges? Passerby 2: Definitely not! Sonia: Thanks. OK, someone else is coming. Excuse me. Have you seen this Tube Chat badge to get people talking? Passerby 3: Yes! I read about them! Sonia: And would you wear one? Passerby 3: Hmm... I don t think so. Sonia: Why not? Passerby 3: Well, I m on normally on the tube at rush hour, when there are loads of people on the train at one time. I don t want to speak while I m all squashed up! Sonia: What do you normally do on the tube? Passerby 3: I read my Kindle or play games on my phone. I m playing Candy Crush now! Sonia: Ah! Level 10. Well done! Here s someone else. Excuse me, will you talk to TEAM Radio? Passerby 4: Of course! Sonia: Do you ever chat on the tube? 1 1
Passerby 4: Chat! Yes! All the time! Sonia: Really? You re the first person to say that today! Passerby 4: Look, I m wearing this badge. Sonia: Oh, you ve got a Tube Chat badge! Passerby 4: I talk to people every day. I ve even made new friends! Sonia: Do people chat to you? Passerby 4: Some people look at me as if I m mad! But actually many people like it just try talking! Sonia: Wow, thank you so much! I ll try that on my journey home. Sonia: This is Sonia and that s the end of my report for TEAM radio. Back to the studio! TRACK 2: FILM Ben: And now, we ve got exciting news for movie fans. Emma Watson is in a new movie! Nicole: It s the latest Disney film: Beauty and the Beast. The film asks a big question. How important is beauty in our lives? Do we worry about our looks too much? Ben: We ve got two teens in the studio, Fred and Jenny. Welcome, guys, say hi to the listeners! Fred / Jenny: Hello! / Hi! Ben: So Jenny, are you an Emma Watson fan? Jenny: Yes, I love her! She s a talented actor and she s gorgeous! Nicole: What do you like about her looks? Jenny: Her looks are classic. She s not fake! She doesn t wear fake tan, dye her hair or wear false eyelashes. She s a natural English rose! And there s something else Nicole: What s that? Jenny: She doesn t do beauty adverts anymore. Nicole: Why s that? Jenny: She doesn t like the beauty industry there s too much pressure to be perfect. That s what she says! Nicole: Do you agree with her? Is there too much pressure? Jenny: Definitely. We all feel pressure to be slim and have perfect hair, glowing skin and white teeth. Ben: What do you think, Fred? Is it the same for boys? Fred: Oh 100%! Boys are always under pressure to have perfectly-styled hair, and straight white teeth! And most of my friends are all working out at the moment. They want to get bigger muscles and have a six-pack, you know, abs! Ben: Is that a good thing? Fred: Well, it s nice to feel confident, but we can t all look like Cristiano Ronaldo! Nicole: Jenny, where do you think the pressure comes from? Jenny: Oh, I think it comes from social media. When I look at other girls photos and selfies on Instagram and Facebook, then I compare myself, I think if only I had longer hair or clearer skin! Ben: And you Fred? Where do you think the pressure comes from? Fred: For me it s peer pressure, from my mates. When we re all in the changing rooms, some of the guys like to compare muscles. So if you re skinny, you feel embarrassed that s why I started to lift weights. Nicole: Back to you, Jenny, do you like to wear make-up? Are you allowed? Jenny: Sure, I m wearing foundation today, and mascara. But my make-up is not heavy. I prefer to look natural and if I wear too much at school, the teachers make you wash it off! Ben: What about you, Fred? Fred: Make-up?! No way, not for a guy. All my friends would laugh at me! Ben: But, do you have a beauty routine? Fred: No, not really. Just a shower every day! I suppose I also use hair gel, but that s it. Nicole: What about you, Jenny? Do you look after your skin? Jenny: Yep, I have a skin routine every morning and every night. I cleanse and moisturise. I want to have glowing skin! Ben: Well, that was great! Thanks so much for coming in Fred and Jenny. See you next time. Fred / Jenny: Bye / see you! 2 2
TRACK 3: SPORT Ben: In this month s TEAM you can read about Max Whitlock. He s a double Olympic Champion with two gold medals! Nicole: But this success didn t happen overnight. Max started gymnastics when he was seven. He s 24 now! Ben: So, what s it like to be an Olympic hopeful? Simon Butler is a gymnast. He has recorded a diary for us. Let s listen! Simon: Hi, I m Simon and I live in Sheffield. I m 14 years old. My dream is to take part in the Tokyo Olympics in This is my diary What time is it? Twenty past five. Where s the snooze button? Just ten more minutes! Half-past five. I must get up now. OK, I ve showered, put on my tracksuit and I m making my bed. Right. I m just going downstairs quietly and out of the door. Shhhh! I don t want to wake up my sister! So, first training session of the day: I go for a run and then my personal trainer gives me some exercise for 30 minutes! C mon Simon! Keep going! Push on through! No pain, no gain! Just got home. It s seven o clock. Time for breakfast! I m starving! Oh great, Mum s cooking bacon and eggs on toast. I need to eat big meals every day. I need lots of energy. I burn a lot of calories! It s ten past eight and I m on the school bus. Everyone looks sleepy, but I m feeling so awake! Now, it s quarter to four. It s the end of the school day. But I can t stop. I m going to gymnastics club to prepare a new routine! That s my mum in the car. She s taking me to the gymnastics club. It s four-thirty. I m at the club and I m putting on my tracksuit. Phew. Just doing my exercises to warm up. I m going to practise for two hours! OK. It s six-thirty. That was fun! It s seven o clock. Time for dinner. I m having chicken and rice lots of it! It s quarter to eight. I m starting my homework. Urgh history, geography and maths! No time for Netflix tonight. It s nearly eleven o clock. I m going to bed, I need to get some sleep. I m setting my alarm for five-fifteen. OK, this is Simon for TEAM and that s the end of my report. Good night! TRACK 4: TEAM WORLD Ben: What s your favourite season, Nicole? Nicole: I really like this time of the year spring. The weather is getting better, the days are getting longer I just love spring! Ben: Me too! I m so happy that winter is over! Our reporter, Katie is in Hyde Park in London. She s been finding out what people think about spring. Katie, can you hear us? Katie: Hi Ben and Nicole it s a beautiful day here in Hyde Park. The sun is shining, the birds are singing. Earlier, I asked Londoners What does spring mean to you? This is what they said! Listeners, write down if they are positive or negative. Passerby 1: It s getting warmer! I m putting away my heavy coat and scarf at last! Passerby 2: What does spring mean to me? I start thinking about my summer holidays! I m so excited! Passerby 3: Spring means one thing: The clocks are going forward by one hour! Oh so we lose an hour in bed! I m going to feel tired! Passerby 4: Oh, when it s spring, I spring clean my house! That ll take a long time. Passerby 5: Spring means I m wearing a T-shirt for the first time this year! Hooray! Passerby 6: Uh-oh, spring means exams are coming! I have to start revising! Passerby 7: Spring means I can go for a run outside and not on a treadmill in the gym! Passerby 8: I feel great when the spring flowers are coming up I love daffodils and the tulips! Passerby 9: Spring means I need to cut the grass in my garden! Boring. Passerby 10: Spring means one thing to me: chocolate! There s chocolate Easter eggs in the shops. Yum! Katie: This is Katie, and I hope you liked my spring report! 3 3
TEAM APRIL / MAY 2017 TRACK 5: YOUR WORLD Nicole: There s a story in this month s TEAM magazine about an Austrian teenager. She s suing her parents. Ben: What do you mean? Suing? Nicole: She s taking her parents to court and they may have to pay her money! Ben: Why s that? Nicole: Because of photos! Her parents have put hundreds of pictures of her on Facebook. Ben: What kind of pictures? Nicole: Everything about this girl s life as a baby, as a child, first day at school. But the girl says they never asked her and she feels embarrassed. Ben: Everyone likes to share things on Facebook but do parents go too far sometimes? Nicole: Let s ask our listeners are your parents oversharing? Call us on Ben: OK, We ve got Jessica on line one. Hi Jessica! What do your parents do? Jessica: Hi Ben! Every year my mum posts a picture of me in my new school uniform. She writes Look at my baby girl so grown up! Oh, it s so embarrassing! Ben: Sorry to hear that, Jessica. Do you ask her to stop? Jessica: Yes. But she ignores me! She does it all the time! Nicole: We ve got Chris on line two. Hey Chris! What s up? Chris: Hi there Nicole. It s my Dad. Nicole: Oh? Chris: I m in the football team, and Dad puts up our results on Facebook every week. He tells people when I score a goal, but also when we lose! NOT COOL! Nicole: I agree, Chris. That definitely isn t cool. Ben: OK, who s on line three? Amanda: Hi Ben, it s Amanda. I want to talk about my mum! Ben: Go ahead. Amanda: Well, she s put all my baby photos online. I mean, everything! Me in the bath, me covered in chocolate! It makes me cringe! Ben: Oh, but isn t it cute? Amanda: No, not for me! All my friends see the photos and the boys in my class make fun of me! Nicole: Next, we ve got Tim on line four. Tell us Tim, what do your parents do? Tim: They put all my exam results online every year. Then, they discuss the grades with other parents. I want some privacy! Nicole: I totally understand Tim, that s horrible! Ben: OK, finally we ve got Daniel on line five. Hi Daniel! Daniel: Hi Ben. It s my mum. She s always filming me. I play violin in the school orchestra. She videos every performance and puts them on YouTube and Facebook! My friends make fun of me! It s awkward! Ben: Oh dear! Well, thanks to everyone who called in. What did we learn today? It seems that parents really are oversharing on the internet! TRACK 6: TEAM NEWS Ben: Nicole, what do you think about clowns? Nicole: Clowns? I don t like them. They re so creepy! Ben: I agree! But clowns are in the news right now. Our reporter Josh is here. He s going to tell us all about it. Welcome Josh! Josh: Thanks Ben, good to be here. Ben: So, why are clowns in the news? Josh: OK. We all know clowns, don t we? They ve got a big red nose, white skin, red lips and curly hair. They re supposed to be funny. They re supposed to make you laugh! Ben: That s right. But some people find them scary! Josh: Exactly! They can be very scary. Especially at the moment. Ben: Why s that, Josh? Josh: Some people are dressing up as clowns and frightening people. Ben: When did this start? Josh: Er, last September. It started in the USA. Now it s a craze and it s come to Canada, Australia and the UK. Ben: What happens? Josh: People dress up as clowns. They put on wigs and masks. Then they stand in public places in the dark! 4 4
Ben: That s terrifying! Josh: It probably started as a prank, but it s not funny anymore. It s scaring children and adults as well! Ben: Where can you see the clowns? Josh: In playgrounds, or car parks, behind bushes and trees. In one town, there was a clown who looked through restaurant windows. The diners were terrified! Ben: So, do the clowns just stand there? Josh: No, sometimes they follow people or jump out to give them a surprise. Ben: Can we do anything to stop it? Josh: The police are asking people to stop this silly craze. They are also arresting some clowns! And some costume shops have stopped selling clown costumes. Ben: Why did this craze start, Josh? Josh: Nobody knows for sure, but it could be because of the horror movie It! That had a scary clown in it and there was a new It film last year. Ben: So people are copying a film? Josh: Yes, that s a possibility. Ben: Well, thanks for coming in Josh. Let s hope the craze ends soon! Josh: Yes, let s hope so. See you! Ben / Nicole: Bye! TRACK 7: AD BREAK Ben: You can read three holiday adverts in the latest issue of TEAM. Nicole: It s holiday time. It s time to pack your suitcase and hop on a plane. Ben: Yes, people are travelling more than ever and it s all because of cheap flights! Nicole: Our reporter, Steph, is at Luton Airport. She s going to talk to some holidaymakers. Steph, are you there? Steph: Hi there Nicole. It s busy here at Luton Airport it s the beginning of the holiday season. I m standing near a check-in desk. Excuse me! Traveller 1: Hello? Steph: I m with TEAM Radio. Where are you travelling to today? Traveller 1: Ibiza. I can t wait to sunbathe in the day and party all night! Steph: Who are you flying with? Traveller 1: EasyJet. It s a budget airline. The flight was very cheap just 70 for a return flight! Result! Steph: Do you often travel on low-cost airlines? Traveller 1: Yeah, I m a student. I don t have much money. But budget airlines can be annoying sometimes. Steph: Why? Can you give an example? Traveller 1: Er, you have to pay extra if you want to book a seat next to someone you know. You have to pay extra for more than one suitcase too! Steph: OK. Here s someone else. Can you spare a minute for TEAM Radio? Traveller 2: Sure! Steph: Where are you flying to? Traveller 2: Florence. Well, near to Florence anyway. Steph: What do you mean? Traveller 2: The airport s in Pisa! I ll have to get a train as well as a flight, which means a longer journey. It s not very convenient. Steph: But the ticket price is cheap? Traveller 2: Oh yes, the ticket price is super cheap. That s why I m flying this way! Steph: Thanks! Here s someone with LOTS of luggage. Hello! Where are you going today? Traveller 3: I m off to Sydney. Steph: Sydney? In Australia? That s a long haul flight! Traveller 3: Yes, it takes around 23 hours to get there. I ve got a stop-over in Singapore. I m going to be travelling through the night! Steph: Are you flying economy? Traveller 3: Absolutely not! I m going business class! Steph: Why? Traveller 3: I m tall, so I need the extra leg room. I have to stretch out my legs! I want a bit of comfort for long flights. Steph: How expensive was the ticket? Traveller 3: No idea it was probably more than 500 for a one-way flight, but my company is paying for it. So I don t care! Steph: Lucky you! Have a good flight! Traveller 3: Thanks, bye. 5 5
LIVE INTERVIEW! TRACK 8: TEAM REPORT Nicole: In TEAM, you can read about homelessness. In the studio today, we met a hairdresser for the homeless, Josh Coombes. TEAM spoke to him earlier. Ben: So Josh, thanks for joining us in the studio today! Let s start by asking you to tell our listeners what it is exactly that you do. Josh: Yeah, thank you for having me. So, er, I m a hairdresser. I started hairdressing about five years ago. Um, I m now taking this skill onto the streets of London and I ve been cutting hair for people who are sleeping rough, people who are homeless in the city. Ben: And how did all this start? Josh: So I think I realised when I trained to be a hairdresser, that it wasn t just about the appearance of somebody and making somebody look good, it s actually about making them feel good. Um, so I, yeah, I wanted a way to give back. I love, I love what I do, but being able to take that from the salon, out onto the street, has been a really amazing experience. Ben: Was there a moment that started all this off for you? Josh: Yeah, I was stopping and speaking to, um, to men and women on the street anyway. Err, so, I was just having conversations and, one day I had my, my hairdressing gear with me in my backpack and it s such a mobile thing. The brilliant thing about hairdressing is how you really can just take it anywhere. Um, so, so actually it was quite spontaneous, I just said to one of the guys I know would you like your hair cut? Ben: And how do you feel after you give a homeless person a haircut? Josh: Initially you might meet them and they might be quite closed, they might have a lot of things they re dealing with right now but to be able to see that transition from somebody feeling that way, to the end of the haircut, seeing them lift up their shoulders, feel more confident, feel like they ve got a bit more self-esteem, that s what really I take from this. It s an amazing feeling to be able to, um, to transform somebody in that small way and make them feel a little bit better about themselves. Ben: And you must have met some really interesting people along the way. Are there any memorable characters that you can tell us about? Josh: Every person I meet has a different story and everyone I meet leads me to realise that there s no one reason that contributes to somebody being where they are. There s a guy I know called, called Darrick, and he, he s somebody who s my age. He had quite a strong, um, addiction and he s actually got over that and I ve, I ve managed to keep in touch with him and I ve seen him, now he s got a girlfriend and he s living with her and we ve really got a close relationship now and it s, it s, it s really amazing to, um, to have seen that. When you see somebody get out of that situation, it s a really, really powerful thing. Ben: I m sure our listeners would like to know more and, see some of your work. What are the best ways for them to keep up-to-date with what you re doing? Josh: Yeah, so, so this is a movement, this is for everybody. Um, it s not just about me hairdressing it doesn t matter what your skill is. Um, it s about your time just starting off and having a conversation with somebody is really important. I believe everyone s got the time for that. Um, a lot of the people I meet, it s about making them feel like they re part of society. So the movement s called #dosomethingfornothing, um, you can follow that on Instagram, so we ve got an account on Um, also my Instagram which Um, but really we re using the hashtag as a platform, so if you go out and you do something like this, share it on the hashtag, we re trying to inspire people, we re trying to use social media as a really powerful thing for good. Ben: That s great, Josh, thanks so much for joining us today. Josh: Thank you very much, cheers. Ben: And that was the end of the TEAM audio. Thanks for joining us and goodbye from all of us in the studio in London. Studio: Goodbye! 6 6
