1 FS EL Reading FS Standards and Item Type Practice Paper-ased Format* Student Name The purpose of these practice materials is to orient teachers and students to the types of questions on paper-based FS tests. y using these materials, students will become familiar with the types of items and response formats that they may see on a paper-based FS test. Passage 1: Making Spring rt by Tony Ross y Nancy Edwards 1 Snow again! Shawn sighed, and her breath covered the window with a gray fog. In ecember, snow glittered like a diamond bracelet. It was a magic frosting on a February day. ut today was the first day of spring. Snow in March was cold and wet, trampled on and dirty. It was not a welcome sight. 2 How can there be snow? Shawn asked her mother. It s spring! 3 Mother raised her shoulders. Spring comes when it s good and ready. The calendar can t make spring be spring. 4 Shawn s breath steamed up another spot on the window. She drew a little flower on it with her finger. I wish I could make spring be spring, she said. I m tired of boots and snow pants and sweaters. 5 We can t change the weather, Mother said, but we can change your clothes. Let s pull out your box of summer clothes and see what still fits. Mother asked. 10 Shawn shook her head and smiled. First she found a huge beach towel and wrapped it around herself like a cape. t the kitchen table she made a sandcastle out of clay. Using a toothpick, she carefully carved out windows and doors. Then she taped a bit of napkin to a straw for a flag. Warm enough for a picnic, maybe, she added hopefully. 13 Shawn washed grapes while her mother made sandwiches. They spread the beach towel on the living-room floor and sat side by side eating lunch. It s back to cold weather and warm clothes. 17 Snowflakes were still falling, but when Shawn breathed on the window, the little flower she had drawn reappeared. She smiled. Her mother got out the box of winter clothes. Putting them on again was fun. Shawn whirled around the room, stopping only long enough to try on the next sweater or boots or pair of snow pants. 25 When the box was empty, Mother said, Take your warm clothes off now, Shawn. 26 ut I want to wear this one, Shawn said, patting the snowman on the winter sweater she was wearing. 27 You will be too warm, Mother said. 28 No, I won t, Shawn said, shaking her head and smiling. She found a shoebox and some soft white cotton puffs. t the kitchen table she began to make a model of the rctic region. She filled the bottom of the shoebox with the cotton puffs. Then she added some play rctic wildlife figures. 29 You re trying to make it be winter, her mother said with a laugh remembering the fun they had last time. 30 I m pretending it s a very cold winter day, Shawn said. 31 Shawn played with the animals for a long time. She imagined how cold it was in the rctic. Soon she began to shiver. It was a good thing she still had on her warm sweater. 32 When Shawn looked out the kitchen window a while later, she thought she saw snow beginning to fall. She blinked. Passage 1: ody Works 1 Mine are the most important cells in this body, declared Muscle ell. Without me, Shari s body couldn t move, her heart wouldn t beat, and her digestive system couldn t digest the food. You know that her body would have no energy without food. o you know how hard I work to keep this body moving? 2 Now wait just a minute, Red lood ell replied. They call me Red for a reason. I collect all the iron from the food and turn it into hemoglobin, which by the way, gives me my brilliant color. The iron I collect attracts oxygen, which I deliver to other cells. You know you need oxygen to work. fter I drop off the oxygen, I then pick up the carbon dioxide and carry it back to the lungs. Red blood cells are very important. One drop of blood contains millions of us red blood cells. We deliver oxygen and remove waste over and over. We continuously travel through Shari s body. Without me, Shari would die. 3 Red, don t forget me, White lood ell joined in quickly. You know I attack every germ that enters Shari s body. We white blood cells surround diseases that would make her sick. We do everything we can not to let them get away from us. Our job is to help Shari s body battle germs and diseases to keep her healthy. 4 I m sorry, White lood ell, Red replied. I know that we work together as partners to keep her healthy and strong. 5 Muscle ell added, on t forget that I make up all those miles of arteries and veins you travel through. You couldn t carry anything without me. Shari s lungs depend on me, too. How do you think she gets oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide? 6 What about me? Liver ell spoke up. The organs and glands of Shari s digestive system have important jobs, too. Without the special enzymes and hormones we produce, Shari wouldn t feel good. 7 OK. I ve tried to be strong and stay out of the argument, one ell said. You other cells know where you would be without strong healthy bones. You would be like a bowl of jelly. Shari couldn t walk, run, or play. She couldn t even move! She would be just one big blob. 8 How do you think you get the calcium that makes bones strong and healthy? Red lood ell asked. 13 FS Standards and Item Type Practice - Informational Text 9 Okay, Red, you got me there, but don t forget where you were born, one ell replied. New blood cells are made in my bone marrow. It seems we must depend on each other. 10 one ell, you depend on me, too. You d be nothing but a pile of sticks without me, Muscle ell added. The long muscle cells are what make the skeleton work. None of you other cells would work without my expanding and contracting. ecause of me, Shari can move and stretch. 11 I have to agree with you, Muscle, Liver ell said. We also depend on the involuntary muscles to send hormones and enzymes exactly when the body needs them. efore you two blood cells start arguing, we need you, too. 12 Stop the arguing, Nerve ell spoke calmly. I hate to tell you this, but I am in control here. I send messages through my complicated network to all of you. Muscle, I tell you when to move. Liver, I tell you to make enzymes. ones, I tell you to make new blood cells. I help each of you do your jobs. We all work together to keep Shari healthy and strong. If just one of you cells doesn t do your job, then Shari s whole body is in trouble. 13 I think you all really should get back to work, said a very authoritative voice. I think you have forgotten I am the one who is in charge. I am the command center. I send signals and messages to all the cells and then your actions are reported back to me. I think, respond, and tell each of you what to do. I control everything in Shari s body. lood ell, don t even think about arguing. You know I need you to operate. 14 Yes, rain, they all replied. They quickly got back to work doing their specific jobs. They knew that all the cells were important in keeping Shari s body healthy and strong. o You Know......some of your muscles are voluntary and some are involuntary? Some of your muscles are voluntary. You decide when they move. Your skeletal muscles are voluntary muscles since you choose when to move them. For example your leg bends to kick a soccer ball because you decide you want it to. Other muscles are involuntary. You cannot control them. Your brain and body tell these muscles what to do without you even thinking about it. Your cardiac (heart) muscle is involuntary, so are the muscles in your stomach and digestive system. While your are in school you may use a computer and later you might watch television or talk on a phone. ll of these inventions are amazing. ut there is something even more wonderful. The human body! 16 If you stop and think about all the things your body does every day, most of it without you even thinking about it, you realize how amazing your body really is! It is made of many different and important parts, but they all have one thing in common. They are all made up of cells. 17 Everyone s body is made of cells. In fact, all living things are made of cells. ells are very small. Most cells are so small they can only be seen through a microscope. 18 Your body has many different kinds of cells. In humans, there are about 200 different types of cells. 19 ifferent cells have different jobs to do.
