Pompeii is an ancient, or very old, Roman city that was preserved when a volcano erupted. 3. They like to visit ancient ruins to learn about cultures from long ago. alternative 1. You can throw trash away, or you can choose an alternative method, such as recycling. 2. When you have two alternative ways to do something, you have a choice or an option. 3. Many alternative, or different, fuels are being developed to reduce our country's dependence on oil. ambitious 1. An ambitious, or aspiring, person has a strong desire to succeed or achieve. 2. An ambitious politician may work hard to succeed or may take ambition too far and become power-hungry. 3. The ambitious mail clerk was promoted to a position of greater responsibility three months after being hired.
2 absentminded 1. You can depend on Maria because she is alert and observant, not absentminded. 2. If you are absentminded, you are preoccupied and forgetful. 3. The absentminded student kept forgetting to bring his homework and book to class. abundant 1. If something is abundant, it is present or available in large amounts. 2. Synonyms for abundant include plentiful, profuse, and overflowing. 3. The Hawaiian Islands are known for their abundant plant life. antique 1. For something to be antique, it must be both old and valuable. 2. My grandfather has an antique clock in his hallway that once belonged to his parents. 3. There's no reason to be alarmed; none of the animals in the touch tank can hurt you.
