What is a conspiracy theory? 5 1 What is a conspiracy theory? When something big happens in the world, we get our information about it in many ways. We can find out about the event by watching the news on TV. We may read about it in the newspaper. We may check it on the Internet. We may hear about it from our family and friends. But, what if the official story we are told is not true? What if the story is just fiction? What if someone made up the story? What if something different really happened? Can we ever know the truth about the event? Or do we just
6 Conspiracy Theories continue to believe the official story? Conspiracy theories are ideas that question the official story. They give us a different story to the official story. They are written or told by people who believe something else happened. These people believe the official story is not true. They believe that someone or some group wants to keep the truth secret. For example, what if aliens have already visited our planet? Do the government really want people to know about it? Are we really ready to believe in aliens? What if a famous movie star did not die the way we were told she did? What if people working for the government killed her? What story do we believe? What if these people could also kill the president of the United States? And what if the official story is that someone else did
What is a conspiracy theory? 7 it? Can we ever know the truth? Then, what if we see pictures of people walking on the moon? We believe that this wonderful event happened. We believe that the government finally put a human on the moon. What if Neil Armstrong did not really walk on the moon? What if the pictures were a trick? What if a beautiful princess died young? We believe the official story. The princess died in a car accident. What if people working for the government killed her? What story do we believe? Then, another event happens that surprises everyone. The World Trade Center is destroyed in a terrorist attack. The terrorists steal airplanes. They fly these airplanes into the Twin Towers in New York. The Twin Towers collapse. A lot of people are killed. We see the event again and again
8 Conspiracy Theories on TV. We read about it in the newspapers. The official story says that terrorists did it. What if the official story is not true? What if there was a secret plan? What if some group knew about the attack and did not try to stop it? It is terrible to think about, right? Finally, what if we think about our own lives? We work, we study, and we talk to our family at home. We sometimes go out with our friends. We sometimes mail people. And we often talk to people using Facebook, Twitter, or LINE. Our messages and the words we speak are secret. Only our friends and family are listening, right? What if the government is listening, too? What if the government is listening to every word you say? What if the government is reading every word you type? What if the government is watching you?
What is a conspiracy theory? 9 But these are just conspiracy theories, right? They cannot be true. They are just ideas that some people have... This book will explore seven popular conspiracy theories from 1947 to the present day. It will tell you about each event. It will tell you the official stories for each event. It will then tell you about the conspiracy theories. It is for you to decide what happened. Do you believe the official story or do you believe the conspiracy theory? Now, dear reader, find a quiet place. Take a look around. Is anyone watching you while you are reading this book? No? That is good. OK. You are safe. Turn the page and let us begin.
10 Conspiracy Theories 2 Roswell (1947) In June 1947, a pilot named Kenneth Arnold was flying over New Mexico, U.S.A. Suddenly, he saw a number of bright lights in front of him. They were moving up and down. These cannot be planes, he thought, they are moving too fast. He looked again. Those bright lights are UFOs, he thought. The UFOs were round and looked like big plates. The pilot was very surprised. After landing his plane, he told his story to the newspapers. The newspapers ran the story. Then two impor-
