What are the characteristics of each? Are these stereotypes? Change Over Time Find words and ideas from the story that represent change over time. Change Over Time A change over time is in Bilbo He was totally against adventures and now he s practically slaying dragons. I think that when Bilbo as running to catch up to the dwarves, I think he changed little because if he still felt the same way about adventures he would of put up more of a fight. The way he just gave up shows his opinion changed a little over (talk about an overnight sensation). The next time I think Bilbo changed was at the goblins castle the way he escaped Gollum and the goblins took guts. The praise he got from the dwarves probably helped to lighten his spirits on the subject. When Bilbo entered the dragons cave you now knwo he changed if you ask yourself would, the Bilbo at the beginning of the book walk into a dragons nest if he knew there was one inside? Does it seem like the Bilbo in the beginning of the book who said adventures would make you late for breakfast put his life in danger for dwarves? Out of all the main characters ithink Bilbo is the one who has changed the most because of all these reasons and more. 3

Ethics The last race is the goblin. Goblins are very filthy, and they thrive in the dark. They work together well and they have a leader named, The Great Goblin.

4 Ethics The last race is the goblin. Goblins are very filthy, and they thrive in the dark. They work together well and they have a leader named, The Great Goblin. They were also described as grotesque, malicious creatures. I believe that the description grotesque and malicious is a stereotypical description of a Goblin. If we look at the movie Spiderman, the Goblin was indeed grotesque and malicious. However, in the Hobbit, the Goblins had a leader and they worked well together. This description, I believe, is more distinct for the purpose of the story in the Hobbit. Question: Pick two of the following characters. How does Bod see them? How do they see Bod? Be specific. When describing the characters and the viewpoints remember that this is not about physical characteristics, but about who they are as people, and how others see them as people. Question: What are the rules that Bod lives by? Which are ones that are explicitly stated (in other words said out loud), and which are the ones that are not explicitly stated? Give and example of each with evidence from the text. 4

5 1. Silas On the one hand, Bod sees Silas as his guardian. When he is confused, His guardian (Silas) could always be counted upon to explain matters clearly and lucidly and as simply as Bod needed in order to understand. Bod also idolizes Silas when he says, I want to be like you. On the other hand, Silas sees Bod as a helpless child who needs protection, which Silas makes it his responsibility. He takes care of all of the boy s basic needs, like food and shelter. When he has to leave the graveyard, Silas asks Miss Lupescu to care for the boy. 2. Miss Lupescu In the beginning, Bod does not like Miss Lupescu because of her horrible food and boring lessons. But that all changes after Miss Lupescu saves him from the ghouls. Bod sees her as the substitute guardian. For example, after Silas comes back, Bod tells him that Miss Lupescu looked after me. I was never in any danger. Similarly, it takes some time for Miss Lupescu to like Bod. When they first meet, she says, Bod is a pet name. A nickname. I do not approve. However, she slowly grows affectionate towards the boy, calling him by his name, coming back to teach him when Silas is away. Miss Lupescu even brings Bod to a football match once. Although Bod has Freedom of the Graveyard, there is one rule he has to live by, that is, he is not allowed out of the graveyard. Silas explains patiently to the boy that outside is not safe yet. Another explicit rule is from Bod s ghost mother, Bod has been told to keep away from that corner of the world (the witch s grave) by Mrs. Owens as far back as he could remember. There are implicit instructions for the boy too. For example, Bod is expected to obey his elders. When Miss Lupescu asks him to eat more of her horrible food, Bod chooses a piece of tomato and chokes it down. Bod also has a curfew. Bedtime, soon, and it would not be wise for him to be late to bed for some time to come. Ironically these are common house rules for a boy who is raised by an entire graveyard community.
