Research Project Task 3 - Presentation Smith English 4AP
What you are graded on There are two parts to the presentation: 1. Electronic Presentation (all your research) 2. Oral Presentation (summary of your research) You will also need to turn in a printed Works Cited page in MLA format
Oral Presentation You will have 5 minutes. I will cut you off, so be prepared to say what you need to say. PRACTICE You will lose points if you run out of time You will lost points if you go under 4 minutes This is a summary of your research. Your electronic presentation will have more information. You need to go over your research question and answer it with your research. Summarize your findings. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM YOUR SOURCES
Oral Presentation Rubric
Electronic Presentation Must be an electronic presentation PowerPoint Prezi ( Any other program that produces similar results. I must be able to read it on my computer. So save it to a flash drive or it to me. Talk with me ahead of time if you will have computer issues Name your file with your name
Electronic Presentation This will contain all your research. Show me that you answered your research question. You must cite your sources in each slide. Minimum of 15 slides You must have a title slide with your name and period You must write your research topic with your research question on your second slide. You need to have a conclusion slide where you answer your research question Your works cited (resources) is on your second to last slide Image sources will be on your last slide google images is not a source. You will be graded on neatness and aesthetic quality. MAKE IT LOOK GOOD
How to Cite for this presentation You need to cite where you found the information in your presentation and also your images. Information if the thought is not yours you have to cite where you got the information from. Otherwise you are plagiarizing. To cite your information: In parenthesis, after the information, you need to put the last name of the author with page number. If there is no name you need to put the title of the work in quotations. At the end of your presentation include a slide for your Works Cited and a separate slide for your image sources (list the name of the site and the address google images is NOT a source).
Ulalume Being one of the first poems that Poe wrote after the death of his wife, its is obvious from the story that he references heavily on ideas based on death and tragedy (Velella). A deeply saddened Poe would go on to write "Ulalume," perhaps his best poem, which dramatizes the speaker's enthrallment to the past. It also tells in Eureka, that is in the annihilation of the cosmos, the self does not simply disappear but instead grows, ultimately recognizing its existence as "that of Jehovah (Poetry Foundation). Considering the recent passing, its only logical to assume that Poe would write about this certain topic in order to better coup with the loss (Velella).
Advice for good presentations Don t use color schemes that are hard on the eyes. Don t put bright yellow on bright pink. Images: Good quality Don t stretch and distort Don t put text over an image that you can t read Don t just have a slide with a whole jumble of images Don t put too much information on one slide. Spread it out over multiple slides if you need to. Don t get carried away with animations, transitions, or sounds. You don t need these things to have a good presentation. Often they are just annoying.
Advice for good presentations Keep your layout simple and easy to follow. Keep your presentation uniform or make each slide similar. Don t get crazy with different fonts and colors on each slide. Don t use hard to read fonts or silly fonts. The font should fit the mood. Bad Idea: My dog Got hit by a Car and died today. Bad Idea: Cancer is a horrible disease that kills every day Also make your font large enough to read. (18 point 20 point 24 point 28 point) PROOFREAD GRAMMAR AND SPELLING COUNT This a FORMAL presentation no slang don t get cute
EXAMPLES What is wrong with the following slides?
The First Chapter Born on July 21, 1899 Occupied Oak Park, Illinois throughout his childhood His childhood was tame and quite normal although he later stated otherwise ( Ernest Hemingway ).
Mary Wollstonecraft Father was a heavy drinker Mother was abused by her husband Many believe she became feminist because of upsetting childhood Wrote multiple feminist works by age 27 Focused on sufferings of lower classes and women Most famous work: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman Tries to commit suicide twice after her love leaves her when her first child is born (Fanny Imlay) Marries William Godwin in 1797 Mary Godwin is born six months later Mother gets blood poisoning and dies 10 days after birth William writes a book about her and ruins reputation
Early Life George Orwell s real name is Eric Arthur Blair He was born in Bengal, India, on June 25th, 1903 For his entire childhood, his family struggled to make ends meet His father was a British civil servant When Orwell was four years old, his family moved back to India
Poe s first published book that he published by the age of 18 Tamerlane, a Fourteenth century ruler loses his love because of his pride and ambition for power.
Research Question #1: What impact does technology have on the development of children in the United States? Research Question #2: How can we prevent children from becoming addicted to technology? Image: Image:
EXAMPLES What is done correctly in the following slides?
Childhood Born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. His parents were John Ernest and Olive Steinbeck. Grew up in a small farming town He was not from a wealthy family but his family was respectable in their community. Growing up, he enjoyed and appreciated his environment of the hills and the Pacific coast. At fourteen, he decided to become a writer. Source: Source: Shillinglaw, Susan. "John Steinbeck, American Writer."
Writing Material F. Scott Fitzgerald unhealthy believed that he had the sole right to use the events in his relationship with Zelda as content for his writing (Phelan). This mind set started off as being innocent as Zelda inspired many of the female characters in his works. After, realizing that she published the novel, Save Me the Waltz, F. Scott Fitzgerald became intensely angry, and called the publisher who had her work to ask them not to publish her work (Metzner). F. Scott and Zelda would continue to argue about the subject in which he would intensely verbally attack her. These arguments are believed to be the cause of Zelda s second breakdown (Phelan).
Early life is defined as Wilde s life before his success in literature and establishment as an author. Wilde s Early Life Wilde s father, Sir William Wilde, was known for his remarkable work in medicine and excellency in the surgical field. But Sir William s knowledge was not limited to medicine, for writing and publication of numerous books on archaeology and folklore was also a part of his father s legacy (The Famous People). Wilde s mother, Jane Francesca Elgee, worked for a weekly Irish newspaper under the pseudonym, Speranza and wrote poems that expressed revolution. Later in her life, Jane translated numerous works in many languages, such as Sidonia the Sorceress ( Biography ).

Conclusion In summary, F. Scott Fitzgerald contained a bias opinion of many wealthy individuals, which was represented in many of his works, including famous and renowned novels, such as The Great Gatsby (1925). Through comparison between the life of John D. Rockefeller and F. Scott Fitzgerald, I was able to deduce that the state of one s life, the individual s perception of it, and their own instincts and traits can largely affect the kinds of opportunities that one accepts and uses to their advantage to achieve their true potential. Because Rockefeller employed traits of diligence, conservatism and professionalism, he seemed to live a satisfying life, regardless of his mistakes. However, due to the fact that Fitzgerald was quite the opposite, and became an alcoholic who did not seem to focus on developing his career/dreams properly, he did not develop a successful writing career in the end. Because of the issues that Fitzgerald had struggled with, I believe that his opinion of the wealthy class, strung from an internal desire to have their fame and fortune. His desire coming from the pride of his ancestral relation to Francis Scott Key, the author of the National Anthem, of which he seemed to exhibit early, and led to his demise and early death as he gained stress and helplessness in trying to accomplish something meaningful, which he did after his death.
