12 Synopsis of Featured Shakespeare Play Tybalt 20 Mercutio Romeo & Juliet The play starts out by revealing the feud between the Capulets and Montagues, two of Verona, Italy's most prestigious families. They engage in a public duel, after which Romeo Montague, after many attempts by others to persuade him to Friar give reason, reveals to his cousin Benvolio that the reason Lawrence for his depression was that he had fallen in love with a woman named Juliet Rosaline who chose to live a life of chastity. In an attempt to lift his spirits, Benvolio persuades Romeo to attend the party at the Capulets, which they were accidentally invited to, so that he can take his mind off Rosaline by focusing his attention towards other beautiful women. (The party was an attempt made by Lord Capulet and a man named Paris, for Paris to woo Juliet Capulet.) They attend the party, and upon seeing each other, Romeo and Juliet instantly fall in love. Although they soon find out each other's identity, they decide to wed when Romeo sneaks to her yard and the two share their strong affection towards one another. The day after, the two are wed, unbeknownst to their parents, by Friar Lawrence, with only Juliet's Romeo Nurse and Romeo's servant Balthasar present as witnesses. They then arrange for Romeo to visit Juliet's quarters later in the night. The next day Romeo and Benvolio visit Mercutio, a good friend. There, Romeo becomes engaged in an argument with Juliet's cousin Tybalt, which turns into a duel between Tybalt and Mercutio. Tybalt kills Mercutio. Furious, Romeo kills Tybalt, and upon realization of his actions and what they might bring, he seeks refuge at Friar Lawrence's quarters for help/advice. Friar Lawrence tells him that he shall be killed if he were to stay in Verona, and that he may not return, also advising that he should spend the night with Juliet before leaving. Romeo does this, and flees for Mantua the next morning. Not knowing of her daughter's secret marriage to Romeo, Lady Capulet informs Juliet that she shall be wed to Paris within the week; she refuses. Her parents force her to comply, and she goes to Friar Lawrence for help. She convinces him to help with her predicament, and he agrees to give her a potion that she would take the night before the wedding, that would make her appear dead. He would then send for Romeo so that they could be reunited. Juliet follows his advice and word gets out of her passing, including to Balthasar, and then to Romeo. Romeo comes to her side, believing she is dead, and kills himself by drinking a vial of poison. She awakes, expecting to find him in a joyous reunion, but instead sees him dead, and commits suicide by stabbing herself with his dagger. With the discovery of their tragic deaths, Romeo and Juliet's families are brought together, bringing their battle of hatred to an end. Kelly M. Crabtree, Dana Middle School Synopsis of Featured Shakespeare Play Claudio Much Ado About Nothing In the Italian town of Messina, Leonato, a wise and caring nobleman who shares his house with his cheerful daughter Hero, his witty niece Beatrice, and his older brother Antonio, prepares his house to welcome home a few of his good friends from war. The group contains a prince, Don Pedro, and two soldiers, Claudio (the strong, good-natured one) and Benedick (the humorous, clever one). Along with them comes Don Pedro's brother Don John, whose cold heart causes problems for everyone. Upon their arrival, Claudio and Hero almost immediately fall in love with each other and decide to marry at the end of the week. Meanwhile, Beatrice and Benedick continue a battle of short humorous insults that they had started long before. To shorten the wait for the wedding, Claudio, Hero and their friends decide to play tricks on Beatrice and Benedick to get them to fall in love with each other like they obviously should. Their game fulfills its purpose shortly after when the two secretly fall in love. Fed up with the love-fest and happiness of everyone else, Don John decides to trick everyone by having one of his close friends, Borachio, make love to Hero's serving lady, Margaret, easily seen in Hero's window at night. He then brings Don Pedro and Claudio to watch. Now believing that he has seen her with another man, Claudia deeply embarrasses Hero by convicting her of adultery and leaving her at the altar. To protect her until word of her innocence is revealed, Hero's family hides her Beatrice and pretends that she has died from grief. Afterwards, Beatrice and Benedick finally exchange word of their secret love for each other. Borachio and Don John are caught when the nightwatchman overhears Borachio brag about the previous night's events. Claudio hears this and grieves for his lost Hero. As a penalty for his false convictions, Leonato forces Borachio Claudio into a blind marriage to his niece whom he says highly resembles his daughter Hero. Claudio consents and the Hero Benedick Margaret day of the wedding, Hero is revealed to be the niece. Everyone rejoices and in the aftermath, Benedick and Beatrice decide to marry each other.
