(She heads toward to put her arms around him) (He draws back) You mustn t touch me. Why? No one has ever touched me. (He is never touched by anyone in the play) Why not? I don t know. No wonder you were crying. I wasn t crying about that. But I can t get my shadow to stick on!
6 HOOK & PIRATES scene ( & Tiger Lily have just snuck on the ship, carrying a clock- hears the Crocodile) It is gone, Captain! There is not a sound. Thought I was frightened, eh? How ould you like a touch of the cat before you walk the plank? Fetch the cat, Jukes, it is in the cabin. Jukes Ay, ay, sir (He exits below) He s off to get the cat, the mean and scratchety cat. The sting of all 9 of its terrible tails... Jukes (from the dark cabin comes a curdling screech) (Followed by s crow) What was that? (Cecco swings into the cabin, and returns, livid) What s the matter with Billy Jukes, you dog? Cecco He s dead---stabbed! Esh Bill Jukes dead! Cecco The cabin is as black as a pit, but there is something terrible in there. Cecco, go back and fetch me out that doodle-doo. Cecco No Captain, no! (He goes to his knees) Did you say you would go, Cecco? Cecco No, no! Please Captain, don t make me! Alright! Alright! (Cecco goes below, all listen..there is another curdling screech, followed by s crow.) Sdeath and oddsfish, who is to bring me out that doodle-doo? Starkey Wait till Cecco comes out. I think I heard you volunteer, Starkey. Starkey No, by thunder! My hook thinks you did. I wonder if it would not be advisable Starkey, to humor the hook Starkey I ll swing before I go in there. All Pirates: Ay-ay, ect. (ad lib) Is it mutiny? Starkey is ringleader. Shake hands, Starkey. (s claw follows him until he leaps overboard) Did any other gentleman say mutiny? (Pirates react) I will bring out that doodle-doo myself. ( enters the cabin w/ his lantern) Something blew out the light. Noodler Some-thing? Esh: Where s Cecco? He is as dead as Jukes. All Pirates (Panic among the men- ad libs... It s s fault, we are doomed, the ship is doomed, Ay- and he has a hook (ect) Noodler Poor Cecco! Esh: It s s fault! (All pirates react and agree.ad lib) HOOK & SMEE scene Yet I have oft heard you say your hook was worth a score of hands- for combing the hair, and other homely uses. Aye,, if I were a mother, I should pray that me children be born with this, instead of that. But threw me hand to a crocodile that happened to be passing by. I have often noticed your strange dread of crocodiles. Not of crocodiles, but of that ONE crocodile. In a way it s sort of a compliment. Well, I want no such compliments. I want Pan who first gave the brute his taste for me! By some lucky chance, he swallowed a clock. A clock! And it goes on- tick tock-tick within him and so before he can reach me, I heard the tick and bolt! Once I heard it strike six inside of him! Someday the clock ll run down.. and then he ll get you.
